What I’m Reading: The Accidental Guardian by Mary Connealy

Mary Connealy has such a way with cowboy fiction! She is one of two authors who I read. . . and enjoy. . . every book!

She’s the only witness to a wagon train attack. Keeping her safe, though, means his world is about to be turned upside down.

When Trace Riley finds the smoldering ruins of a small wagon train, he recognizes an attack by the same group who left him as sole survivor years ago. Living off the wilderness since then, he’s finally carved out a home and started a herd–while serving as a self-appointed guardian of the trail. He’d hoped the days of driving off dangerous men were over, but the latest attack shows otherwise.

Deborah Harkness saved her younger sister and two toddlers during the attack, and now finds herself at the mercy of her rescuer. Trace becomes an accidental guardian when he offers the only shelter for miles around and agrees to take them in until they can safely continue their journey. His simple bachelor existence never anticipated kids and women in the picture and their arrival is unsettling–yet enticing.

Trace and Deborah find themselves drawing ever closer as they work together to bring justice to the trail and help the group survive the winter–but every day closer to spring means a day closer to leaving the mountains forever.

This book unwittingly reminds me of one of my first favorite books; a book my mother read to us as children and one I have read many times as a teen, and later as an adult – so, of course, The Accidental Guardian will likely also hold a special place in my heart for years to come.

Mary has a talent for pulling her readers into the character’s skin, making you feel what they are feeling; both good and bad, which always makes for a story that is nearly impossible to put down!

I am already looking forward to book 2 in this series!

Book Review | A Worthy Heart by Susan Anne Mason

Are you really surprised that I would be so enamored by an Irish romance…

Really?

Cuz I’m not.

And yes, I am obsessed with the cover!

That beautiful green…

That intricate scrolling…

The bright Irish sky behind her – at least, I’m going with the assumption that the sky behind her belongs to my beloved Emerald Isle!

Is it any wonder I snapped this book right up.

And WOW!

Now I have to go back and read book 1 of course!

Note to authors: we need MORE Irish romance! If I ever manage to make it across the pond to the land of my ancestors, I just may write one myself!

In the meantime, I’ll enjoy the likes of this story – and any others I can get my hands on! Though I’m not 100% certain the other books in this series are actually Irish-themed. I still want to read them! LOL!

Whether you hail from across the sea or not – this is not a book to miss!

“Now and Forever” by Mary Connealy

I can’t think of any two people less suited for each other than loner Matt Tucker and animal lover Shannon Wilde…

…but Mary Connealy takes the challenge in stride and tackles Now and Forever with gusto!

In the second installment of the Wild at Heart series, Mary Connealy focuses on the middle sister in the Wilde family and her unexpected collision with wild back country man Matt Tucker.

You will never see the romance coming, even though you pretty much know it’s inevitable.

And once love takes hold… watch out!

Bears… Sheep… Raging rivers… and Romance… OH MY!

Don’t miss this tumultuous adventure!

And watch for book #3… coming soon!

Here is a brief synopsis from Bethany House

Saddle up for romance and adventure with the Wilde sisters!

Shannon Wilde is the middle sister–and the one who loves animals. She’s established her own homestead and is raising sheep for their wool. Things are going fine…until Shannon gets swept over a cliff by Matthew Tucker!

Tucker seizes every opportunity to get away from civilization, but one particular walk in the woods ends with him sprinting away from an angry grizzly and plunging into a raging river, accidentally taking Shannon Wilde with him. Their adventure in the wilderness results in the solitary mountain man finding himself hitched to a young woman with a passel of relatives, a homestead, and a flock of sheep to care for.

As Tucker and Shannon learn to live with each other, strange things begin to happen on Shannon’s land. Someone clearly wants to drive her off, but whoever it is apparently didn’t count on Tucker. Trying to scare Matthew Tucker just makes him mad–and trying to hurt the woman he’s falling in love with sets off something even he never expected.

“Love Unexpected” | Book 1 of Jody Hedlund’s Beacons of Hope Series

Love Unexpected is the first full-length novel in Jody Hedlund’s Beacons of Hope series!

If you have not read her novella intro; Out of the Storm, go snag it and read it BEFORE you read this one! It’s a FREE novella and you can’t get much better than FREE!

I have to be honest – the first thing that came to mind when I read the synopsis for this book was a memory of sitting with my mother as she read Janette Oke’s “Love Comes Softly” – woman stranded… in need of protection and shelter. Man with a young child… in need of a wife. Marriage seems like the best idea so they get “hitched”.

But even those similarities are worlds apart.

What a wonderful story! What an intriguing plot! What amazingly complex characters!

A love of lighthouses doesn’t hurt either…

A MUST READ for fans of Jody’s work!

And here is a bit more about Love Unexpected:

A Perfect Blend of History and Romance, with a Whisper of Mystery

All she’s ever wanted was a home. But stranded at Presque Isle port after their steamboat sank, Emma Chambers and her brother, Ryan, couldn’t be farther away from security. While Ryan at least can find work, Emma can’t even find a place to stay. An unlikely solution arises when the lighthouse keeper, who recently lost his wife and is struggling to raise his young son, arrives in town. A traveling preacher believes they might be the answer to each others’ problems, and after a hasty marriage, Emma is headed back to the lighthouse with this handsome but quiet stranger.

But nothing in her wandering life has prepared her for suddenly being asked to raise a child and keep a house. Struggling at every turn, Emma also suspects Patrick may be keeping something hidden from her. In town she hears whispers about strange circumstances surrounding his previous wife’s death, and it seems as though Emma’s answered prayer for a home and family may actually be something much more dangerous.

And watch for my next review. I’ll be talking about the next book in this series – the second full-length book; Hearts Made Whole.

“Out of The Storm” | Intro Novella in Jody Hedlund’s Beacons of Hope Series

Before I tell you what I think of this new series… I have to say – I’m really glad it’s been nearly a month now since I read Jody’s post about eBook prices… I’ve had several weeks for my temper to cool and I’m now… well, somewhat calm.

It would not be fair to take out my frustration on her books… would it?

No.

Fine then.

Imagine my surprise when I realized I had never actually reviewed this book on my blog. What on Earth happened…

Well, I dunno but I’m reviewing it NOW!
You can’t get much better than FREE! And the fact that it is an AMAZING story is just one BONUS of this FANTASTIC new series by Jody Hedlund!

OK… Yes, I have to admit it. I was not a huge fan of Jody’s new YA series but this series… I LOVE!

This first story, even though it’s a novella – does more than just introduce the series. It sets the tone completely. It tells us that we are diving into a wonderful series and it’s very exciting.

If you haven’t read it, go snag it! It’s FREE!

And here is a bit more about the novella – just in case you still need convincing [remember – it’s FREE!]

Having grown up in a lighthouse, loneliness is all Isabelle Thornton has ever known–and all, she assumes, she ever will know. But when her lightkeeper father rescues a young man from the lake, her sheltered world is turned upside down.

Bestselling author Jody Hedlund’s Out of the Storm is her first ever novella and introduces readers to Beacons of Hope, a new series set in the 1800s amid the romance, history, and danger surrounding the Great Lakes lighthouses of Michigan.

And watch for my next review. I’ll be talking about the next book in this series – the first full-length book; Love Unexpected.

“The Love Letters” – A Wonderful NEW Stand alone novel by Beverly Lewis

Has Beverly Lewis ever written a book that wasn’t just AWESOME…

I don’t think so!

Beverly Lewis have written another amazing book – one that I will read and re-read for years to come.

Beverly Lewis has an amazing talent for tackling tough subjects.

She tells us a phenomenal story about something that is very much an every-day type occurrence – but she does it in such a way that takes that ordinary story to the extraordinary.

What begins as a favor to her parents, turns into something else entirely when Marlena must care for her sister’s child while she is in the hospital.

All the little twists and turns and inside-outs you would never expect from what sounds simple at the start, are what make Beverly Lewis such a masterful storyteller!

READ IT! You won’t be sorry!

5star

What Baker Publishing has to say about “Love Letters”

Marlena needed time to let things sink in. It was beyond her how all this could possibly work out–adding the care of an infant to her daily routine. Fortunately, it would just be until Luella returned home from the hospital and was stronger.

No more than a couple weeks, surely…

Marlena Wenger’s life takes an unexpected turn on the day she learns she must care for her estranged sister’s baby. Spending the summer in Brownstown, Pennsylvania, to assist her Mennonite grandmother, and miles from Marlena’s Old Order Amish beau, she feels out of her element in nearly every respect. Yet Marlena determines to do her best and stay focused on her future, even as those hopes become drastically altered.

“Where Trust Lies” by Janette Oke | Book 2 – Return to The Canadian West

I was THRILLED when I discovered Janette Oke was writing the first book in this series – Where Courage Calls!

      My review is HERE

Anyone who watched the wonderful movie Hallmark put out a few years ago knows that – while it was supposed to be based on her first book in the Canadian West series – it was done a bit differently.

I’ll admit that it’s an intriguing idea – but true fans of Janette Oke’s work were more than a little surprised… or at least I was.

Then Janette and her daughter Laurel decided to write a novel about the adventures of the character from Hallmark’s movie – and IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER!

It bore certain resemblances to the film but, true to Janette’s staggering talent, it was SO MUCH BETTER!

Where Trust Lies is no different in that way!

Janette Oke is a tremendous writer and it’s clear her daughter has inherited that talent as well!

Since I don’t watch the series (we haven’t had cable for several years) I know nothing about whether or not this story lines up with what is going on but Bethany House proclaims it as a companion to the series so there must be some similar events going on there.

I refuse to give anything away but I have to commend Janette on her ability to write such emotional scenes. Who will Beth choose… What will Beth choose? Even in an age where trains cross so much more of the country, there is much that remains untamed and wild.

You will agonize right along with Beth as she tries to decide between her family and her students and friend back West – not to mention a certain Mountie who has stolen her heart…

How would you decide? I’m not sure I could…

Review © JCMorrows 2015

East or West… Love or Family… Obligation or Duty… What will Beth choose?Tweet this!

Will the comfortable & privileged East win out over the wild & wonderful West?Tweet this!

{MORE ABOUT WHERE TRUST LIES}

She loves her friends and students in the West, but family obligations have called her home. Where does she truly belong?

After a year of teaching in the Canadian West, Beth Thatcher returns home to her family. She barely has time to settle in before her mother announces plans for a family holiday–a luxurious steamship tour along the eastern coast of Canada and the United States. Hoping to reconnect with her mother and her sisters, Beth agrees to join them, but she quickly realizes that things have changed since she went away, and renewing their close bond is going to be more challenging than she expected.

There’s one special thing to look forward to–letters and telephone calls from Jarrick, the Mountie who has stolen her heart. The distance between them is almost too much to bear. But can she give her heart to Jarrick when it will mean saying good-bye to her family once again–and possibly forever? And will she still want to live in the western wilds after the steamship tour opens up a world of people and places she never imagined?

Then comes a great test of Beth’s faith. Someone in her family has trusted the wrong person, and suddenly everything Beth knows and loves is toppled. Torn between her family and her dreams, will Beth finally discover where her heart truly belongs?

A companion story to Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart TV series!

Sad… the Lone Star Brides series is coming to an end with “A Matter of Heart” by Tracie Peterson

A Matter of HeartThis is the third book in Tracie Peterson‘s Lone Star Brides series.

I have now read all three of them now and let me just say…

WOW!

Each story is better than the last – not always how it works.

A Matter of Heart is another great read!

Such powerful emotions, such great stories, such strong characters – and how she comes up with so many different ones who are similar in some ways but still so very different… well, it’s only one of the things that makes her such an amazing author!

Unlike my experience with the first book in this series; I didn’t even bother to read any of the other silly reviews for this book.

And I do believe that Tracie’s sales speak for themselves!

I have a whole new outlook on Texas and I have to say that…even though I absolutely detest heat, I just have to see it someday soon!

Of course it won’t be the same… but worth it all the same, I’m sure!

Once again I am thrilled to say that God is interwoven into the story in a perfect way! So many Christian fiction books are either too preachy or there’s not nearly enough of God in the story for it to truly work as a Christian fiction novel.

And I know I’ve said it before but it has to be said again. It’s so much more believable for me as far as history goes because… Historically speaking… people were more religious. So it’s more believable, more accurate and it’s more interesting!

The book is a new favorite of mine and I’m sad to see that it’s the last one. Although I’m hopeful she has more series in the works already!

5star

Here is a bit more about A Matter of Heart from Bethany House:

Austin Todd, a former Secret Service agent, enjoys working now as a Texas Ranger cattle inspector. Jessica is drawn to his kind nature and the unspoken pain she sees in his eyes.

(CLOSED) Who wants to win a book!

I was gifted a copy of this book at the recent ACFW conference! What a GREAT perk! I was not required to review it but I love to review books so I’m going to!

First I will say; this book is nothing like any other I have ever read… ever!

WOW!

I thought I was reading about a much earlier time period but party lines and going after the vote is so much more familiar to me than most of the historicals I’ve picked up recently… (Yes, it also makes me feel old to admit that.)

Even having a gift with languages, I don’t think I could have kept up with this story so easily if Lauraine Snelling were not such a great story-teller!

What a wonderful idea for a story!

And what a wonderful author Lauraine Snelling is!

No other author I know of pulls off making the story about more than just the main characters quite so well (well maybe one other but I won’t name-bomb Lauraine’s review – if you wanna know, send me a message and I’ll tell you)

Suffice to say, this is a book worth reading and I know I’m excited for #2!

How about you?

Ewan seeks help from Laura, the former owner’s daughter, and he feels a connection with her, but she’s being courted by another man–a lawyer with far more social clout and money than Ewan. Besides, Ewan has resolved he’ll focus on making the brickmaking operation enough of a success that he can become a partner in the business and be able to afford to bring his sisters over from Scotland.

But when Hugh signs a bad business deal, all Ewan’s hard work may come to naught. As his plans begin to crumble, Laura reveals something surprising. She and her mother may have a way to save the brickworks, and in turn Ewan may have another shot at winning Laura’s heart.

Judith Miller has a way with words that draws you right into the story and I don’t mind telling you that I was not at all certain I would enjoy this book.

I’m so glad my fears were unfounded!

I was intrigued immediately. I was charmed by the honest Ewan and inspired by the fiery Laura.

Together, they weave a story that I never would have expected.

Judith Miller has written a story that not many others would have even thought of!

She has taken a commonplace business and used it to show us how the Civil War affected an entire community.

And what a GREAT job she has done with it!

I only recently discovered my love of Civil War fiction and I am excited to add Judith Miller’s book to my growing collection! And I hope to find even more of hers to add as well!

Don’t miss this book! It’s a wonderful story with delightful characters who have a strong faith in God that clearly drives their lives!

Amazing!

I’m so thrilled to find so many wonderful new books about this era and others being published by Christian publishing companies.

It’s wonderful!

Here is a bit more about the book from Bethany House Publishers:

In the clay-rich hills of the newly founded state of West Virginia, two families tentatively come together to rebuild a war-torn brickmaking business.

Ewan McKay has immigrated to West Virginia with his aunt and uncle, promising to trade his skills in the clay business for financial help. Uncle Hugh purchases a brickmaking operation from a Civil War widow and her daughter, and it’s Ewan’s job to get the company up and running again.

Ewan seeks help from Laura, the former owner’s daughter, and he quickly feels a connection with her, but she’s being courted by another man–a lawyer with far more social clout and money than Ewan. Resolving that he’ll make the brickworks enough of a success that he can become a partner in the business and be able to afford to bring his sisters over from Ireland, Ewan pours all his energy into the new job.

But when Hugh signs a bad business deal, all Ewan’s hard work is put in jeopardy. As his hopes for the future crumble, Laura reveals something surprising. Can she help him save the brickworks, and will Ewan finally get a shot at winning her heart?

OK… OK… I’m hooked good and proper courtesy of – Tried & True by Mary Connealy

Oh my goodness it’s not fair!

Mary Connealy is a genius!Trie & True

I can not remember when I have ever laughed so hard… Well, yes I can but it had been a while.

This is not a book that you should miss!

Looking for strong female characters – they don’t get any stronger than the Wilde sisters!

Looking for adventure – it’s on the very first page… and then some! The whole book is filled with adventure after adventure, just like the wild west was!

Looking for God – you will find him in this story! He’s there and He’s not just slapped in as an afterthought! Even with such unconventional characters, they live their lives by a very clear Biblical world-view.

Mary Connealy is a masterful writer who had me on the edge of my seat from the first sentence. I was either fearing for someone’s life, cringing at the temper I knew was coming or laughing hysterically.

You won’t be able to put it down. You family will go from being annoyed at you for growling like a grizzly bear fresh out of hibernation to annoyed with your constant outbursts of laughter. Yes, I speak from experience.

Amazing! Absolutely amazing! Historical fiction about the wild west is another genre I never thought I would enjoy but Mary Connealy has made a fan out of me!

Now I just have to find some more of her books! And wait patiently… OK, not so patiently then, for the rest of this series.

WOW!

Miracle in a Dry Season by Sarah Loudin Thomas | The first novel in the Appalachian Blessings series

18652828

WOW!

As I sit here, tears streaming down my face, I am simply amazed at how wonderful this story is. I simply can not believe this is the first novel Sarah Loudin Thomas has written.

I tend to be cautious of non-Amish fiction lately but this book gets a solid two thumbs up and 5 stars!

What a wonderful story! The depth of emotion, the strength of character, the beautiful miracles that God sends this sleepy little town. There are not enough words for how much this story has touched my heart.

Sarah Loudin Thomas is an exceptionally gifted author and I believe God has given her a little something extra special – just like her wonderful characters!

I grew up in the south (I know West Virginia isn’t exactly the “south” but it’s close enough I think) and I have lived in small towns just like Wise – yes, even in the last 30 years. There are still small towns like Wise all over the south – especially in Appalachia. Sarah’s descriptions were spot-on and her portrayal of the townspeople’s reactions rang absolutely true. I’ve never been a huge fan of history but there’s something about those mountains that has inspired me to learn as much as possible about life there. So I speak the truth when I say this sounds absolutely right.

This story will touch your heart, even while it makes you mad. And there are more than a few times it will make you laugh out loud!

It’s just all around a GREAT story!

Appalachian serenade by Sarah Loudin Thomas | A Novella in the Appalachian Blessings series

20140727-205352.jpg

I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this novella. But let me tell you, it is more than worth the “price” – especially since it’s free!

I would happily BUY a copy of this if it ever becomes available in paperback – not that I’m unhappy with the eBook… I really enjoy having a REAL book in my hands when I’m reading!

Especially a GREAT BOOK!

If “Miracle in a Dry Season” – the next book in this series, is anywhere as well-written as “Appalachian Serenade”, I will be a very happy woman!

Sarah Loudin Thomas does not write as if this is her first (actually it might be her second, I’m not entirely certain) book!

WOW!

Her characters are vivid and colorful and there is the perfect amount of description to give you a clear picture of them.

And the story is absolutely beautiful! Sarah does a novella right! She gives us enough of a lead-in that we don’t feel like we’re being rushed through. And there are enough pages to give a decent story arc!

BRAVO Sarah!

I don’t know about you but I can not wait to read “Miracle in a Dry Season”!

“Child of Mine” – A Beautiful collaboration between Beverly and David Lewis.

Child of Mine by Beverly and David Lewis

This is the first collaboration between David and Beverly Lewis I have read and I have to say I am very excited to read their others!

WOW!

This is most definitely the best book I’ve read this year – maybe even in the last few years. No offense intended to all of the other books I’ve read this year.

David and Beverly Lewis have written an amazing book – one that I will read and re-read for years to come.

In fact the first thing I did when I finished, before I even stopped crying, was hand it to mom – telling her she HAS to read it NEXT!

I was going to say that the only negative thing I have to say about this book is that from the very beginning of the book I felt a strong sense of foreboding – but after reading the book, I am convinced it was simply the exceptional writing of this unbeatable pair. They don’t just pull you into the story, they drag you right into their characters’ skin! And with this delicate topic, there is plenty of worry making it’s way through the people with fill these pages with their lives.

Yes. They’re that real!

And it is a true testament to their skill that the book does not real like it was written by two different people. It is as seamlessly smooth a partnership as I have ever seen between two people – another reason I am excited to read their other works as well… if for no other reason than to compare them to the solo books they’ve also written.

And this story is unlike any other story I have ever read – Amish or not!

There is nothing, positively nothing predictable about this book. Even when you are completely certain you have it all figured out… you’ll find out you’re wrong. I know I did. I was sure I knew what was coming and I could not have been more wrong.

But oh… to be wrong.

This story is a beautiful example of God’s plans and how far-reaching and inter-woven they are. These two wonderful authors weave together a story that involves so many people and so many different sub-plots and the end result is one you could never imagine… but when all is said and done, you can see the harmony of each little piece that came together and blended into the breathtaking tapestry that shows us just how much God loves each one of us!

And what a blessing!

READ IT! You won’t be sorry!

A Look Back | Author Spotlight: Beverly Lewis | Often referred to as the “Mother” of Amish fiction.

Recently I found a better way to conduct my author interviews and, to be fair to everyone I have already interviewed, I am going to re-post them in the same format. Since Beverly Lewis is the first author I interviewed, she gets to go first here too.

Fair Warning: The interview was given to accompany my review of The Last Bride –  so, if you have not yet read the book, you may find information below that you consider to be spoilers.

A bit about Beverly via her WEBSITE:

Home/ About/ Beverly’s Story

bev-homepageBeverly Marie Jones (Lewis) was born in the heart of Amish country—Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At the tender age of nine, she began writing short stories and poetry. Prior to that, she made up lyrics to the “little fingers” piano pieces she learned, at the age of five.

“My mother saved everything I wrote, even the stories I dreamed up during my grade school years,” Beverly says. One such tale is semi-autobiographical, about a young girl whose parents can no longer afford to give her piano lessons. The manuscript was 77 pages long and titled “She Shall Have Music,” penned under the shade of a lone willow tree. “Reading, writing, and playing piano have been top three on my list of favorite things,” she says.

Not until her own children were well into middle school did Beverly seek to publish her work, first in magazines such as Highlights for Children, Dolphin Log, and Guideposts for Kids. Her first book followed in 1993—Mountain Bikes and Garbanzo Beans—presently retitled Big Bad Beans (book #22 in the popular Cul-de-Sac Kids series of chapter books—see list of Bev’s children’s books).

So here is my interview:

1- Is there any particular inspiration from your own life for ‘The Last Bride”?

The concept of close inner-marriage among a closed community has captured my interest–and my heart, especially more so lately with many Amish and Mennonited children being born with unique genetic disorders…some fatal.

2- Are you planning more books in the “Home to Hickory Hollow” series or are you moving on to a new series?

The Last Bride if the fifth and final book in this “stand-alone” approach to a beloved and popular series. I just finished the edit for The River, which debuts on September 2, this fall–it is a true stand-alone with no connections to any other character or series. I’m crazy about this story. My readers will love Tilly and Ruth’s story–I promise. 🙂

Also, Child of Mine, a novel I’ve co-written with my husband, David Lewis (best-selling author of Coming Home).releases soon, on June 3rd. If you loved Sanctuary, our first co-written novel, 12 years ago, you will love Child of Mine.

3- Is there anything you can tell us about your next project or is it still hush hush?

The River (my fall ’14 novel) is set in a most heavenly farmland setting in Lancaster County Amish country–”Eden Valley.” I fell in love with this area when I was a young girl growing up nearby…and more recently, while I was visiting there, following the Amish schoolhouse shootings in the fall of ’06. It’s the story of two young Amish women–one courting age, the other married–who left their Plain roots but have returned for their parents’ landmark wedding anniversary celebration. There are serious family secrets to resolve, and several understandings to overcome. And the coming to grips with the younger sister’s first love, who still seems to care for her, even though she has gone “fancy.” I can hardly wait for my readers to take Tilly and Ruth’s story journey with me!

4- Do you still regularly attend conferences? If yes, is it for your own benefit or only to share your advice and experience with others?

I attend as keynote speaker or teacher, yes. Going to writers’ conferences is invaluable and I heartily recommend to anyone wishing to be published traditionally. Or simply to glean and hone their craft of writing.

5- Is there a piece of advice you have for new or aspiring writers?

Read the best literature. Write your heart. Don’t be hesitant to revise, rework, and re-do. Writers are re-writers, if they want to be published. Have a teachable spirit when you do land your contract and start working with editors. Think of yourself as the pencil and the editor as the eraser. Truly. Sometimes what/s on the page just isn’t working. And, oh, did I mention–the best writers are voracious readers?! Also, go to the local bookstore and visualize where your book will land on the shelf, once you’re published.

I hope you have enjoyed my review and Beverly’s interview.

THANK YOU Beverly for taking time out of what I’m certain is a very busy schedule to answer my questions. Your advice is especially inspiring to me and I feel so blessed to have had this opportunity.

I pray God continues to bless your writing and I look forward to many more books in the future!

Beverly’s most recent release is: CHILD OF MINE – a standalone novel she has written with her husband, David Lewis. (a book that I will also be reviewing soon – I know…shameless plug)

Home/ Books/ Standalone /Child of Mine

My Review for “The Last Bride” – Book 5 of the Home to Hickory Hollow series AND a Special Interview with Author: Beverly Lewis

The Last Bride by Beverly Lewis

OK…

I am definitely going to have to go back and finish
“The Bridesmaid” and then read the rest of the series because… WOW!

Just WOW!

“The Last Bride” is amazing!

Beverly Lewis is an exceptionally talented author!

This is not a typical Amish fiction. It’s not even a typical romantic drama.

Beverly Lewis has managed to take several situations you don’t usually find in the Amish world and weave them beautifully into this story of loss and love in a strict old-order Amish community.

The loss… and the love are not what you might be expecting either. There were several things about the book that took me completely by surprise.

Definitely not a predictable story!

It is one I will never forget.

The journey of Tessie and the people around her is crafted into a wonderfully flowing experience – albeit fraught with drama and tragedy. And… it is incredibly easy to find yourself in Tessie’s shoes… however difficult a place that is.

I think this is one of the most endearing and powerful stories about a young Amish girl I’ve ever read. Generally speaking, these types of stories are entertaining and heart-wrenching but rarely does a story about a strict Amish community touch so close to home.

This one does!

And, even though I now feel inexplicably compelled to go back and read the rest of the series, this is not a book that cannot be read out of order. For those of us who have read other books in this series, (or seen the movies made from The Shunning and The Confession – which are not part of the same series but they are written about the same community) it is comforting to “see” old friends from other books by Beverly Lewis. They are woven into the story so well, you don’t feel as if you are out of step because you don’t know their back-story.

It’s just an all-around GREAT story! READ IT!

Of her Old Order parents’ five daughters, Tessie Miller is the last to marry. She has her heart set on Amishman Marcus King, but Tessie’s father opposes the match.

Impetuously, Tessie and Marcus elope to the English world, then return to Hickory Hollow to live as singles, trusting they’ll convince the Millers to give their love a chance over time. But when the unthinkable happens, Tessie faces the almost-certain censure of the People. Will she find a reason for hope in spite of her desperate plight?

“A Sensible Arrangement” by Tracie Peterson

A Sensible Arrangement by Tracie PetersonThis is the first book I have ever read by Tracie Peterson and now I’m going to have to go track down as many as I can get my hands on because it’s SO GOOD!

WOW!

An amazing story! Such inspiring characters!
A great, great read!

From page one I was hooked. (And I’m not much for historical fiction – I enjoy a few select authors but mostly I’m more fond of modern stories.)

I found myself attached to the characters immediately and I laugh at the few other silly reviews I’ve read that say the characters were very flat and unlovable.

Marty is precisely the kind of woman I would expect to read about who hails from Texas. She knows how to take care of herself and she is not afraid of a challenge.

I love how well God is interwoven into the story – even though Marty is not very fond of Him through most of the book. And it’s very refreshing to see everyone around her trying to win her back to Him. Most of the books I’ve read about people who have lost their faith in God, show the journey back but not always by way of others trying to win them back to the Kingdom.

Tracie Peterson does this well and she does it without sounding preachy.

The book is definitely a new favorite of mine and I can’t wait to read some of her other novels!

Here is a bit more about A Sensible Arrangement from Bethany House:

Marty Dandridge Olson is ready to leave behind the pain of the past.
Answering an advertisement for a “Lone Star bride,” she leaves her Texas ranch and heads to Denver to marry a man she doesn’t know.

Jake Wythe is the man waiting for her.
Burned by love, he marries now simply to satisfy the board of Morgan Bank, which believes a man of his standing in society should be wed. Together Jake and Marty agree they are done with romance and love and will make this nothing more than a marriage of convenience.

When missing money and a collapsing economy threaten his job, Jake’s yearning to return to ranching grows ever stronger, much to Marty’s dismay. But a fondness has grown between them, as well, further complicating matters.

What will happen when their relationship shifts in unexpected ways…
and dreams and secrets collide?

Leslie Gould – Flirting with Shakespeare (Review of Minding Molly | The Courtships of Lancaster County)

Courting-Cate-248x384    AdoringAddie_roughs.indd

20140213-172335.jpg

I must say I never thought I would see an Amish story styled after a Shakespearean play but Leslie Gould has written three of them. I don’t know if she has any more planned but they seem to be fairly popular so I wouldn’t be surprised.

I am reviewing Minding Molly but the questions/answers/opinions really apply to all three books so it’s kind of one and the same.

Did Leslie Gould accomplish what she set out to do? Yes, I believe she did. They read very much like the plays of Shakespeare’s that they were styled after. The characters follow suit and the story went along the same lines… minus the extreme tragedy that typically befalls Shakespeare’s characters in the end. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of tragedy filling all three.

How was the writing? It was good. Leslie Gould is a skilled writer. You’d have to be to take a Shakespearean tragedy and style it into a modern day Amish story and she definitely succeeds there. It’s a bit difficult to get attached to some of her characters but we have to remember who they’re patterned after. And I have to say, I find it a little difficult to accept that boys and girls who are brought up Amish would behave in the ways some of them did but again, remember who the characters are written to behave as…

 Now the really tough question…

Did I enjoy the book(s)? No, I really didn’t. When I think back to it, in high school I didn’t really enjoy the work of Shakespeare so much as I enjoyed the positive attention I received from my classmates because I understood his work.

Will I give Leslie Gould’s work another chance? Yes. Especially if she writes a typical Amish novel – I definitely would.

I suppose the point is that I am not the person I was twenty years ago. I’m not even the same person I was five years ago so my taste in literature has changed dramatically and I tend to steer clear of a lot of what is “popular”. That would probably include these books and any others in the series that comes along.

However, I enjoyed her collaboration with Mindy Starns Clark on The Women of Lancaster County series so I’m not writing her off at all.

Is this the book/series for you? That’s a question you have to answer for yourself. Check out the synopsis below, read some other reviews, see if your local library has it to borrow. And, if you just LOVE Shakespeare, I’d say yes, it is the book/series for you so you should give it a try. And I always say you should start at the beginning so start with Courting Cate and go from there to Adoring Addie and then finish up with Minding Molly.

A brief rundown on Minding Molly from Bethany House:

Molly Zook Has Everything Planned Just Right.
Or So She Thinks!

Molly Zook’s always liked being in control, so she’s struggling with her mother’s wish that, to save the family farm, she marry Mervin Mosier. Especially after Molly meets Leon Fisher. He’s from Montana but is now training horses at a nearby ranch. He’s tall and muscular and confident–Molly has never met anyone like him and she’s sure he feels the same about her.

Determined to let nothing get between them, Molly tries to coax Mervin into falling back in love with Molly’s best friend, Hannah. A weekend camping trip in the Poconos could be just the place…but things quickly go awry, and it seems Leon and Hannah might be falling for each other instead! Will Molly keep struggling to control everyone and everything around her? Or will she learn to let God handle the twists and turns of her life?
