What I’m reading: Preparing Your Heart for Marriage by Gary L. Thomas

The wedding is planned, but are you spiritually prepared for your wedding day? Trusted relationship author Gary Thomas coaches engaged couples on how to grow closer to the Lord in the days leading up to the wedding as a means of preparing them for all the days after the wedding.

Engagement is bursting with promise, hope, joy, and anticipation of all kinds. It can also be one of the busiest times your life. For some, planning a wedding, with all the decisions involved, can feel less like the onset of marriage and more like a long to-do list. Amidst the busyness, this devotional is designed to help you think through the spiritual priorities and challenges that lie ahead in order to grow an outstanding marriage filled with love, grace, and God’s blessing.

This lovely book provides encouraging entries that will help you deal with common issues such as:

What real intimacy means
How to celebrate your differences
Remembering to laugh together
With a special section on the marriage vows and meditations for the bride and groom, Preparing Your Heart for Marriage will help you grow in your relationship as a couple as you become closer to God.

Pretty sure I am not the right person to read and review this book…

I mean, it reads well. The devotions are well written. And everything sounds good to me, but given my past… my life… my complete and utter lack of anything that could be remotely deemed success in the are of relationships or marriage, I’m thinking there are a lot of people who would be better equipped to review this book.

Nevertheless, I am… So, here goes.

I actually got the book for my daughter and son; who are both in their teen years. And, while it’s a bit above their heads for now, there is still valuable information to impart at the ages they’re at now.

Plus, I hope the advice within will be invaluable to them at some point. I pray and hope, and pray some more every day that neither of them will have the same sort of hopeless, horrible experiences that I have had in my own past relationships.

Where was this book when I was seventeen!?! Gah!

BOOK REVIEW | Unblemished by Sara Ella

“A breathtaking fantasy set in an extraordinary fairy-tale world, with deceptive twists and an addictively adorable cast who are illusory to the end. Just when I thought I’d figured each out, Sara Ella sent me for another ride. A wholly original story, Unblemished begins as a sweet melody and quickly becomes an anthem of the heart. And I’m singing my soul out. Fans of Once Upon a Time and Julie Kagawa, brace yourselves.” —Mary Weber, award-winning author of the Storm Siren Trilogy

Eliyana can’t bear to look at her own reflection. But what if that were only one Reflection—one world? What if another world exists where her blemish could become her strength?

Eliyana is used to the shadows. With a birthmark covering half her face, she just hopes to graduate high school unscathed. That is, until Joshua hops a fence and changes her perspective. No one, aside from her mother, has ever treated her like he does: normal. Maybe even beautiful. Because of Joshua, Eliyana finally begins to believe she could be loved.

But one night her mother doesn’t come home, and that’s when everything gets weird. Now Joshua is her new, and rather reluctant, legal Guardian. Add a hooded stalker and a Central Park battle to the mix and you’ve gone from weird to otherworldly.

Eliyana soon finds herself in a world much larger and more complicated than she’s ever known. A world enslaved by a powerful and vile man. And Eliyana holds the answer to defeating him. How can an ordinary girl, a blemished girl, become a savior when she can’t even save herself?

“Lyrically written and achingly romantic—Unblemished will tug your heartstrings!” —Melissa Landers, author of Alienated, Invaded, and Starflight

“Self-worth and destiny collide in this twisty-turny fantasy full of surprise and heart. Propelled into a world she knows nothing about, Eliyana learns that the birthmark she despises is not quite the superficial curse she thought it was—it’s worse, and the mark comes with a heavy responsibility. Can she face her reflection long enough to be the hero her new friends need? With charm and wit, author Sara Ella delivers Unblemished, a magical story with a compelling message and a unique take on the perils of Central Park.” —Shannon Dittemore, author of the Angel Eyes trilogy

Unblemished is an enchanting, beautifully written adventure with a pitch-perfect blend of fantasy, realism, and romance. Move this one to the top of your TBR pile and clear your schedule—you won’t want to put it down!” —Lorie Langdon, author of the Amazon bestselling DOON series

Unblemished had me from the first chapter—mystery, romance, and mind-blowing twists and turns that I SO did not see coming! The worlds Sara Ella builds are complex and seamless; the characters she creates are beautifully flawed. Readers are sure to love this book and finish it, as I did, begging for more!” —Krista McGee, author of the ANOMALY trilogy

– MY THOUGHTS –

An intriguing concept and a fascinating cover (though I’m not certain the nature of the story truly comes across through the cover image) and a story our teenagers desperately need in this world that is obsessed with body image.

Weight, looks, fashion and style are things which should not define a person, and yet, the very people who extol the phrase “Never judge a book by its cover” certainly do – in so many more ways than one.

I am unsure if this topic was Sara’s aim or simply a by-product of the storyline, but I applaud her for staying true to such a delicate subject!

BRAVO!

Book Review | Remember to Forget by Ashley Royer

I can easily see where this book would appeal to fans of “The Fault in our Stars” or the book which I presume was the inspiration for the fan-fiction portion of this work; “If I Stay”…

It’s not the sort of experience I typically seek out. I tend to gravitate toward hopeful stories. Love and loss may be part of many of those stories, but I much prefer an underlying current of hope – rather than despair.

My teen son read a bit of the story as well and he said it was a shock to realize he was reading a male main character’s perspective – due to having a young lady’s picture on the cover . . . and the fact that Levi could easily be a feminine name as well.

Readers who enjoy this more EMO brand of fiction will find a story they can cling to with whatever equates as enjoyment for them. It’s just not for me.

I was given a copy of this book free in exchange for my honest review – which I have given.

Here is a brief synopsis from Publisher

In Remember to Forget from Watty Award-winning author Ashley Royer, Levi has refused to speak since the tragic death of his girlfriend, Delia, and can’t seem to come out of his depression and hindering self-doubt. Desperate to make some positive change in Levi’s life, his mother sends him to live with his father in Maine. Though the idea of moving from Australia to America seems completely daunting, Levi passively accepts his fate, but once he lands faces personal struggles and self-doubt at the same time he and his dad battle through resentment and misunderstanding. And then, while at therapy, Levi meets Delilah, a girl who eerily reminds him of someone he lost.

“The Plain Choice” by Sherry Gore

“A True Story of Choosing to Live an “Amish” Life”

Notice the “” around Amish? Yeah…

I read a lot of Amish fiction. Anyone who follows my reviews knows that, but there’s something about this that doesn’t ring quite true.

It’s possible there are huge differences in Amish fiction and Amish reality – I kinda figured that one anyway…

It’s possible the publisher really doesn’t know the difference between Amish and Mennonite…

It’s also possible they’re using the word Amish because a lot of other people don’t know the difference between Amish and Mennonite…

Whatever the reason – this book is a good read. Well, it’s not always a good read. Some of the things Sherry has been through are enough to make the average person incredibly thankful for their nice, quiet, boring life.

But it is an interesting read and there is a lot of good in the life Sherry has chosen for herself.

In fact, I could easily see myself doing much of what she does.

I can’t give up my car or my phone but I wear long skirts all the time already and I love the idea of living more simply. The world has become so complicated, it’s amazing any of us are sane.

Whether you enjoy Amish fiction, Mennonite fiction or just reading about someone’s crazy, messed-up, overwhelming life – “The Plain Choice” is a good choice!

More about the book from Zondervan:

Raised in a broken family and emotionally overlooked, Sherry Gore grew up without a solid foundation, a prisoner of her own poor choices, and at times without hope. A series of terrible mistakes left her feeling wrecked and alone and a sudden tragedy threw Sherry into an emotional tailspin too powerful to escape.

Sherry hangs by a thread, unable to see how she can go on living, until it happens: on a morning of no particular significance, she walks into a church and BAM the truth of Jesus forgiving love shatters her world and cleaves her life in two: She goes to bed stunned; she wakes up a Christian.

Unwilling to return to the darkness of her former life, Sherry attacks her faith head on. Soon the life Sherry Gore remakes for herself and her children as she seeks to follow the teachings of the Bible features head coverings, simple dress, and a focus on Jesus Christ. Only then does she realize, in a fit of excitement, that there are others like her. They are called Amish and Mennonite, and she realizes she has found her people.

The plain choice that Sherry makes is not easy and life still brings unexpected pain and heartache – but it changes everything for her, as she becomes one of the few people on earth to have successfully joined the Amish from the outside.

She has found her place. And her story proves that one can return from the darkest depths to the purest light with the power of God.”

“Harvest Festival” | Newest installment in the wonderful series that has been continued by the talented Mike Berenstain!

OK… before I get started, I just have to mention this CRAZY article I ran across about a week ago. No, before you go read it, be WARNED – it’s not 100% clean and the comments are worse… LINK

The article postulates that we are living in an alternate dimension… I know it sounds more like science fiction than reality but the hook was this: The article’s author claims they remember The Berenstain Bears being the Berenstein Bears.

Funny thing is; I do too! In fact, I can remember asking my mother if it was pronounced “stane” or “stine“. I had an unfortunate experience in elementary school involving a character named “Ace”. I won’t go into the whole painful thing here but I’m sure you get the idea… That incident is seared into my memory by association.

What does this have to do with my review? Nothing. It’s just an intriguing puzzle – one that will most likely never be solved because for every group that remembers “ei”, there are just as many who remember “ai”… and just as many who never read the books so they have no idea.
Now that we’ve had our twilight zone moment for the day…

I still remember reading these wonderful books when I was a kid… of course that was when Stan & Jan were writing them.

And it is so wonderful to have this amazing series continuing so I can share the stories with my own children.

Harvest Festival is a wonderful story about the TRUE meaning of Thankfulness – something we should ALL be reminded of. So it’s a great book for children AND their parents.

Bless you Mike, for having the courage to present wholesome and Biblical stories that kids will enjoy for many years! And hopefully, share with their own children!

Don’t miss this book. And be on the lookout for more from Mike Berenstain! I know I will!

Shelley Gray joins up with 3 of her fellow Historical writers to bring us a TRUE treat!

Among the Fair Magnolias is the newest collaboration from Thomas Nelson and it is FANTASTIC!

Shelley Gray gets together with Tamera Alexander, Dorothy Love and Elizabeth Musser to bring us four wonderful Love stories – each with a touch of mystery!

To Mend a Dream by Tamera Alexander is your typical “orphans out on their own, lost their family home, desperate to make a better life for themselves” story. Except it ins’t typical AT ALL! Tamera Alexander hooks you with the first sentence and doesn’t let go until the very last one!

An Outlaw’s Heart by Shelley Gray is a romance with more than one twist. Shelley uses her exceptional talent for romance and combines it with her flair for suspense to intrigue her readers!

A Heart So True by Dorothy Love is a story of the age old problem; Do I follow my heart or my family’s wishes?  I refuse to spoil it for you – it’s JUST TOO GOOD!

Love Beyond Limits by Elizabeth Musser involves a favorite storyline of mine! It’s always a struggle to try and decide whether you should take a chance on love, but when you have the added impossibility of forbidden love, it’s a journey that you DO NOT want to miss!

5star

And here is a bit more about the book from Thomas Nelson:

During the most turbulent decade of our nation’s history, four Southern women—their destinies forged by birth and heritage—face nearly impossible choices on their journeys in life . . . and in love.

To Mend a Dream by Tamera Alexander

Savannah Darby would do almost anything to revisit her family home.

So when the new owner Aidan Bedford seeks to redecorate the house for his fiancée, Savannah jumps at the opportunity. But can she find the box her father supposedly hid there during the war before her assignment is completed? And before she sees yet another battle lost on the home front—this time, a battle of the heart.

An Outlaw’s Heart by Shelley Gray

Seven years ago Russell Champion was betrayed by the two most important women in his life. Now Russell returns home, but is it too late to make amends with his mother and find closure with his true love?

A Heart So True by Dorothy Love

Abigail Clayton hopes to reconcile with Dr. Wade Bennett and become his wife. But her father insists she marry her distant cousin Charles Kittridge so the plantations of the two families will be joined. With her wedding looming, Abby must choose between duty to her family and the yearnings of her own heart.

Love Beyond Limits by Elizabeth Musser

Emily Derracott loves her childhood friend Thomas McGinnis, but she cannot marry a man who doesn’t share her strong convictions about the freedmen. Besides, she harbors a secret love for someone else. But the prospect of becoming his wife is not only improbable—it is completely impossible.

The Looney Experiment by Luke Reynolds

Not what I was expecting… at… all.

And not a book my kiddos are interested in either unfortunately.

Not much of a surprise though – my daughter is much more interested in Princess stories and my son has such a high reading level, it’s difficult to find young adult books on a high enough level for him.

I do believe that many middle grade students will enjoy the story though. It highlights the type of things many kids deal with in their school career and amazingly enough, even I related (and I was in middle school… well more than a few years ago).

The irony is this; my son’s imagination is every bit as active as the main character’s… but he didn’t recognize it. Perhaps that’s normal for someone with an overactive imagination. It feels perfectly normal to them, so they don’t see where they’re different.

Of course, in Atticus’ case, his classmates have pointed out just how different he is so there’s no doubt in his mind. WHY it is acceptable to make someone feel like a freak when they’re clearly exceptional… I will NEVER understand. OK… OK… I won’t go off on that tangent now but you get the idea.

Here is a brief synopsis from Zondervan:

Atticus Hobart couldn’t feel lower. He’s in love with a girl who doesn’t know he exists, he is the class bully’s personal punching bag, and to top it all off, his dad has just left the family. Into this drama steps Mr. Looney, a 77-year-old substitute English teacher with uncanny insight and a most unconventional approach to teaching. But Atticus soon discovers there’s more to Mr. Looney’s methods than he’d first thought. And as Atticus begins to unlock the truths within his own name, he finds that his hyper-imagination can help him forge his own voice, and maybe—just maybe—discover that the power to face his problems was inside him all along.

Sorry I’m Not Sorry | An Honest Look At Bullying From The Bully

Not precisely what I was expecting…

But a very intriguing read all the same. I’m not 100% sold on this book being helpful for tweens or even teens… especially if they are actively being bullied but it could be a valuable resource for parents.

It is interesting to see just how differently people respond to the same sorts of stimulus – what causes some young people to become bullies is the same sort of experience that turns others into a victim of bullies.

It just goes to show that everyone is different and everyone reacts differently to stress and strain.

And for the young person who has a good relationship with Christ, this insight will definitely help them to forgive and love the bully… perhaps even giving them an opportunity to share God’s love with their bully!

Here is a brief synopsis from Thomas Nelson:

Bullies aren’t born mean—through the vicious cycle of mean, bullies are made.

According to the Ambassadors 4 Kids Club, one out of every four students is bullied—and 85% of these situations never receive intervention. Parents, students, and teachers have amped up solving the bullying problem for a networked generation of kids.

Written by bestselling author Nancy Rue, each book in the Mean Girl Makeover trilogy focuses on a different character’s point of view: the bully, the victim, and the bystander. The books show solid biblical solutions to the bullying problem set in a story for tween girls.

Sorry I’m Not Sorry tells the story of Kylie Steppe, former queen bee of Gold Country Middle School. After bullying a fellow GCMS student, Kylie has been expelled—and she has to attend mandatory counseling. Without her posse to aid her and other peers to torment, Kylie focuses on the person who stole her GVMS popularity crown: Tori Taylor. As Kylie plots revenge on Tori, she attends therapy sessions, where she reveals a few details that might explain why she finds power in preying on her middle school peers. After a rough year with bullying backfire, will Kylie decide to become more empathetic with her peers?

It’s hard for tweens to imagine why a bully acts the way she does. Sorry I’m Not Sorry shows girls that they hold the power to stop bullying through mutual understanding and acts of love.

The Good, The Bad, and The Grace of GOD: What Honesty and Pain Taught Us About Faith, Family, and Forgiveness

WOW! I like Jess and Jep’s story!

I really had no idea what to expect… I like what I’ve heard so far – about the Robinson clan. And after reading this book, I feel like I know them much better. If you’re a fan of Duck Dynasty, you know Jep, the youngest Robertson son, and his wife Jessica. They tell their stories to give encouragement to those who have struggled.

I enjoyed reading about them… as they each take turns telling their story, beginning with their childhood and teenage years, not holding back on the bad stuff, but putting it out there to share with us. Most people will be able to identify with some of the problems that Jess and Jep went through.

They share their insecurity, secrets, addictions – even a divorce. Learning what they went through certainly made me feel like I knew them better; I could easily picture them at times, going through some of the same problems that many of us go through.

But the point is – Jess and Jep both overcame their problems – with the help of God and their families. Jep and Jessica tell about their insecurities, as well as their realization that God loves us all just as we are — even with all our secrets and sins.

Duck Dynasty fans should definitely read The Good, the Bad, and the Grace of God.

Here is a brief synopsis from Thomas Nelson:

A Moving Story of Redemption and Second Chances

Jep Robertson, the youngest son of Duck Commander Phil Robertson, and his wife, Jessica, open up about their personal trials, their early years together, and the challenges that might have destroyed them both had the grace of God not intervened. Jep describes being molested as a child and his reluctance to tell anyone until only a few years ago, his downward spiral into drug and alcohol abuse, and the eventual intervention of his family. Jessica shares about the difficult failure of her first marriage while still a teenager and the hurt that came along with it, much of it from the church. Her insecurities spun out of control as she wondered whether she would ever be good enough or pretty enough. This book is their love story but, more importantly, their love story for God.

“We are desperate to let people know that no matter what you’ve done; no matter what you’ve lived through, you can come out of it.  You can be washed clean.  You are redeemed.”

The “Princess Grace Sticker and Activity Book” is a terrific book to get the little princess in your family!

If you have a little princess in your family… as I do… she will absolutely LOVE this book!

And may I say how excited I was to find this! The book has fun activities AND stickers that your little princess will get hours of enjoyment from.

Just make sure you tell her beforehand that she is to put the stickers ONLY in the book…

But that isn’t all you will find in the pages! There is a wonderful little story about Princess Grace and her kitten… and let me tell you, Kittens are VERY popular at my house so my daughter was thrilled!

Writing this review actually required quite a bit of finesse on my part as I got these books for my daughter and had the brilliant (albeit, not very well thought out) idea to give them to her for her birthday!

Not the first time she’s caught me with a book that was supposed to be a surprise. LOL!

Book 4 in Amy Clipston’s Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series releases TODAY!

A Simple Prayer is the long awaited 4th novel in Amy Clipston’s “The Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel” series and it releases TODAY! Yes, I got an early look! I LOVE being a book reviewer!

A Simple Prayer by Amy CLipston

This has been one of my absolute favorite series!

In A Hopeful Heart, Hannah met Trey… and had to face a very hard decision.

In A Mother’s Secret, single mother, Carolyn (not something you typically read in an Amish novel by the way) the love of her life… it just takes some time to figure that out.

Their story is continued in “An Amish Cradle” – in Amy’s novella: “A Son for Always” by the way…

In A Dream of Home, we meet our most unlikely couple and we get to watch them go through such an unexpected courtship. It’s so very exciting!

The final book in this series is every bit as wonderful as the other three…

And what a powerful story.

Amy has a particular talent for writing characters who are so beautifully flawed. I’m not just talking about Linda Zook either…

You’re not going to want to put this book down!

Come watch the sparks fly between Linda Zook and Aaron Ebersol. You won’t want to miss a second of the show.

And those aren’t the only sparks in this story – There is quite a bit of friction between Aaron and his brother Solomon as well.

You won’t regret it!

Happy Reading!

Here is what Zondervan has to say about A Simple Prayer:

Life has taken much from Linda Zook. Now she dares to hope for a chance at love and a new beginning.

Linda Zook, 32, works part-time at the Lancaster Grand Hotel. As the sole survivor of a buggy accident that left her orphaned at age four, she was raised by her unwilling Uncle Reuben. Linda longs to be worthy of someone, but the life-long effects of her injuries and her upbringing under the care of her embittered uncle have destroyed her self-worth.

Aaron Ebersol, 32, left the Amish community 17 years ago when he could no longer bear the restrictions or the constant tension with his father. He d written too many unanswered letters to his mother and found himself incapable of putting down any roots in his new home in Missouri. Success in work could not replace the family that denied Aaron, even after all of these years.

Aaron hastily returns to the Amish community of Paradise, PA, after receiving word of his mother’s stroke. Hesitant to get too close to the family he was once a part of, he decides to stay at the Heart of Paradise Bed & Breakfast. He soon encounters Linda, working there part-time, and they begin to develop a friendship.

Aaron’s return allows him to reconnect with his family as he jumps into home improvement projects, hoping to make his parents house more accessible to his handicapped mother. But before long, he is enraged to learn that his brother, Solomon, had hidden all of Aaron’s letters to their mother.

Linda and Aaron must each learn to forgive the family members who have deceived and forsaken them. And Aaron must also show Linda that she is worthy of his love.

WOW! “God Bless Our Country” is THE BEST I have see yet in this series that has been continued by the talented Mike Berenstain!

This is the first one of these books I have reviewed and it is definitely my favorite so far! Of course I haven’t read all of the new ones so that may change.

WOW!

I remember reading these wonderful books when I was a kid… of course that was when Stan & Jan were writing them… and I am thrilled to see that their son Mike loved the books so much, he has continued with the very series his parents loved so much!

BRAVO Mike!

Thank you and God Bless you Mike! It is wonderful to have this amazing series continuing so that I can share the stories with my own children.

No one should miss this wonderful book! Mike has truly captured the style that made his parent’s books in this series famous with children everywhere!

And this particular story – well, it could have been a tough one to translate into “Bear Country” speak… but Mike did an exceptional job! He gets the major points across in a way that makes learning about history FUN for kids!

LOVE IT!

Don’t miss this book. And be on the lookout for more from Mike Berenstain! I know I will!

“An Uncertain Choice” by Jody Hedlund | YA DEBUT

Well, I’ll say this… Jody Hedlund excels at starting things off with a bang!

Let me say this also – if you are at all squeamish, have a weak stomach or a sensitive nature, you might want to rethink this read.

I can hardly believe it’s classified as young adult because the opening chapter alone is certainly not what I would present to a young audience.

But then, Jody has 10+ books under her belt so she may know more about it than me – so don’t just take my word for it.

Despite being too much for my tender Mercy’s heart, the book is incredibly well-written. In fact, it was all I could do to put it down… even when I was more than a little bothered by the content.

And possibly young adults today are more mature than I am giving them credit for and are perfectly able to handle such things but I know I am not and I’m 35.

Of course I discovered that when I tried to read about WWII…

Certain authors understand the squeamishness of their audience and write in such a way to show the horrors of real life without making it quite so descriptive.

This is not the first story of Jody Hedlund’s I have read and it certainly won’t be the last. I am nearly obsessed with her new lighthouse series and I look forward to each and every one so she has not lost me as a reader… just maybe not of her medievel series.

By the way, I’m giving the book 3 stars because – even though it’s not for me – it is exceptionally well-written. It would have been 4 but I’m still not certain this particular story is suitable for young adults and I hope the 3 stars will catch more attention and perhaps more readers will see my warning.

“Serving Up A Sweetheart” by Cheryl Wyatt | A Year of Weddings Novella – February 2015

What an intriguing story.

It’s kind of funny… every one of these stories I pick up, I find that I have something in common with the characters within.

I was bullied for very different reasons in high school but I know just how difficult that is to deal with, and to try and move beyond.

I understand totally the need to accomplish something, to prove to everyone that you can.

And I can completely feel the aggravation that Meadow would experience when she has to deal with a man who tormented her through her tender teen years.

All in all, an excellent addition to the Year of Weddings lineup.

She has to accept help from the last person on earth she wants to see: Colin McGrath. The tormentor from her past is now a contractor, her new neighbor—and the only person available to take on a project of this size.

Will Meadow learn to trust the new Colin even as their relationship grows from a business exchange to something more meaningful?

Miracle at The Higher Grounds Cafe by Max Lucado

Oh yeah! Give me a book about coffee and miracle… I’m in!

I know his work from the myriad of children’s stories I’ve read to my kiddos.

I also know him from his work on the children’s show – Hermie and friends.

But I had no idea really what to expect from Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe.

What a wonderful story of the power of prayer!

A lot of people think stories of God’s miraculous power only belongs in the Bible… or in a fictional story.

But I know that God performs miracles NOW… every day! I’ve witnessed them. I been a recipient of them.

I’ve watched them change lives and heal people… not just of sickness but of broken hearts and spirits.

Clearly Max Lucado has also experienced God’s miraculous power!

Miracle at The Higher Grounds Cafe is exactly what the cover says… “A Heavenly Novel”! WONDERFUL!

Not a book you want to miss!

You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. by Ben Carson MD

WOW!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

Ben Carson is not only a gifted surgeon, he is a wonderful writer – funny, interesting and this book is exceptionally difficult to put down.

Even the descriptions of brain surgery, which should be nothing but gross, had my complete attention because they were phrased in such a way that made them interesting but not at all gross or disgusting.

And the stories about Dr. Carson’s mother… WOW!

No wonder he is such an intelligent and learned man – she is clearly a GENIUS!

I refuse to spoil the book for you but please take my word for it – it is a FANTASTIC book! A MUST READ! And not just for teens either… parents will get so much out of this book too!

Here is a brief synopsis from Thomas Nelson:

Throughout his life, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson has needed to overcome many obstacles: His father leaving the family; being considered stupid by his classmates in grade school; growing up in inner-city Detroit; and having a violent temper. But Dr. Carson didn’t let his circumstances control him, and instead discovered eight principles that helped shape his future.

In You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to Think Big, Dr. Carson unpacks the eight important parts of Thinking Big–Talent, Honesty, Insight, being Nice, Knowledge, Books, In-Depth learning, and God–and presents the stories of people who demonstrated those things in his life. By applying the idea of T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. to your life, and by looking at those around you as well, you too can overcome obstacles and work toward achieving your dreams.

A LOOK BACK at “A March Bride” by Rachel Hauck | Royal Weddings series #1.5 | Review marathon!

20140228-153818.jpg

Well, I have to admit – reading over my initial review was a bit… odd.

Anyone who read it the first time around – knows that.

For anyone who has not read it, you can click HERE if you’re curious.

OK… now, having said that – I’m going to try to do the review justice again.

If you read my review yesterday, you know I came late to this wonderful series and it seems like I had to wait forever to read the next chapter in Nathaniel and Susanna’s romance!”

I was also tickled to find out that this wonderful story will be available in March of this year in a PAPER book with two other wonderful stories in the Year of Weddings series!

Now on to my review…

I am reminded yet again that Rachel Hauck is a GREAT writer! WOW!

You could not have pried the tablet out of my hand! while I was reading A March Bride

Every trial, every misstep, every twist and turn of this amazing story shows you that Rachel Hauck is in tune with precisely how God’s plans work!

We think our own stumbling blocks are just that. And sometimes… maybe… they are – because we have to stumble to look up.

Each trial you have in your own life, whether it is part of God’s plan or not, will help get you on your way to the destination God has in mind for you, and I LOVE that Rachel has that in mind when she’s writing these stories.

In fact, God is central to her novels in a way unlike most others you will read. It’s AMAZING! God has truly gifted Rachel Hauck with such an amazing gift!

The only complaint I have about this book is that there wasn’t more of it!

Whether you enjoyed Once Upon A Prince or not, A March Bride is a MUST READ! – Tweet this!

Now onto the next story in this amazing series!

Review © JCMorrows 2015

Here’s a bit more about A March Bride from Zondervan:

Susanna has found her true prince, and their happily ever after is just around the corner. But when Nate asks her to give up something precious to her, Susanna can’t help but wonder if it’s a sign that their love is not meant to be.

Susanna Truitt (Once Upon A Prince) is three weeks from royalty. She’ll soon marry King Nathaniel II of Brighton Kingdom. But when the government insists she renounce her American citizenship before the wedding, coupled with the lack of involvement by family and friends, Susanna’s heart begins to doubt whether this marriage is God’s plan for her.

Nathaniel would do anything for his bride-to-be. But he knows his position requires that she give up a lot to be with him. Her life will never be her own—right down to her very identity.

When she travels home to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, right before the wedding, Nathaniel fears she won’t return. Gathering his courage, he devises a plan to win his bride all over again, and together they seek out a kingdom to treasure above all.

A year’s worth of novellas from twelve inspirational romance authors. Happily ever after guaranteed.

“A Lady at Willowgrove Hall” by Sarah E. Ladd

This is the first book by Sarah Ladd that I’ve read and I’m kicking myself. I’m usually so vigilant about reading a series in order but I wasn’t sure this would be a book I enjoy so I just went ahead and read this one without tracking down the first two…

Now I’m wishing I had taken the extra time. Of course, I can always read it again after I find the first two. YAY!

This is a book that has completely and absolutely restored my faith in Historical romance!

Once upon a time, I was an avid reader of Historical romances and I cringed every time the ladies outfits and behavior were described because – while I LOVE reading about the adventure and the brave characters who fell madly in love – I knew there were SOOOO many details that were just terribly wrong.

Not so with this one! No, the characters are not perfect – even in historical times, no one was perfect. But they are so very much more accurate and I rejoice because my inner historian is finally calm and I can actually ENJOY the story!

And yes, I have to go back and read books 1 and 2 so I can read this one AGAIN!

BRAVO Sarah!

More from Thomas Nelson about A Lady at Willowgrove Hall:

Her secret cloaks her in isolation and loneliness. His secret traps him in a life that is not his own.

Cecily Faire carries the shame of her past wherever she treads, knowing one slip of the tongue could expose her disgrace. But soon after becoming a lady’s companion at Willowgrove Hall, Cecily finds herself face-to-face with a man well-acquainted with the past she’s desperately hidden for years.

Nathaniel Stanton has a secret of his own—one that has haunted him for years and tied him to his father’s position as steward of Willowgrove Hall. To protect his family, Nathaniel dares not breath a word of the truth. But as long as the shadow looms over him, he’ll never be free to find his own way in the world. He’ll never be free to fall in love.

When the secrets swirling within Willowgrove Hall come to light, Cecily and Nathaniel must confront a painful choice: Will they continue running from the past . . . or will they stand together and fight for a future without the suffocating weight of secrets long suffered?

WOW! WOW! WOW!

The Promise is the kind of story that every single young person needs to read!

Parents – BUY this book for your young women! Because I can tell you, FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, that this kind of thing does not ONLY happen when going across oceans to another culture! It can happen right in your own backyard!

One reviewer said “I know things like this happen….sometimes it is just easier to put our heads in the sand.” and that seems to be what far too many of us parents do.

DON’T!

THANK YOU to Beth Wiseman for taking such a courageous step and writing this amazing book! I can not imagine the depths your research took you to – BRAVO!

And THANK YOU Beth, for infusing this story with such a powerful message of God! If ever there was a place for it…

BRAVO!

More from Thomas Nelson about The Promise:

Mallory Hammond is determined not to let her boyfriend, parents, or anyone else get in the way of her #1 goal—to save a life. She had that chance when she was a teenager, and the opportunity slipped away, leaving a void she’s desperate to fill. Then a new friend she met online offers her the chance she’s dreamed of. But she’ll have to leave behind everyone she loves to take it.

Tate Webber has loved Mallory for years. He understands that Mallory’s free spirit has to fly, and when he gives her the space she needs, he hopes that when she lands, the two of them will be in the same place and can marry at last.

In a bold move—and with lots of resistance from Tate and those closest to her—Mallory decides to travel across the world to fulfill her dream. Tate begs her not to go, but Mallory embarks on the dangerous journey to Pakistan anyway, only to discover how swiftly and easily promises can be broken. Her new friend isn’t who he says he is. And Mallory can only pray she’ll make it out alive.

“All’s Fair In Love and Cupcakes” by Betsy St. Amant | No it’s not Christmas but still an EXCELLENT read for this time of year!

I really wanted to read and review this book much earlier but it didn’t work out as I had hoped so it was doubly a blessing to be given a second chance to read and review the book!

THANK YOU BookLook Bloggers!

What a great story idea! I LOVE reading about bakeries and there have been so many wonderful books and stories written about the sweet romances that happen in or because of yummy treats lately!

Betsy St. Amant has joined the ranks of these writers… and with a fun twist to boot!

They say there are no new stories but this one is definitely not one that sounds like a lot of others I’ve read.

What a great idea! What a great concept! What a great story!

And what better way for a man to see how much his best friend means to him – than to realize he is about to lose her…

More from Zondervan about All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes:

Kat inspected rows of the same old cupcakes. They seemed to blink back at her, as if they knew she was capable of so much more.

Kat Varland has had enough of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

At twenty-six years old, Kat is still living in the shadows of her family in Bayou Bend, Louisiana. Still working shifts at her Aunt Maggie’s bakery. Still wondering what to do with her passion for baking and her business degree. And still single.

But when Lucas Brannen, Kat’s best friend, signs her up for a reality TV bake-off on Cupcake Combat, everything Kat ever wanted is suddenly dangled in front of her: creative license as a baker, recognition as a visionary . . . and a job at a famous bakery in New York.

As the competition heats up, Lucas realizes he might have made a huge mistake. As much as he wants the best for Kat, the only thing he wants for himself—her—is suddenly in danger of slipping away.

The bright lights of reality cooking wars and the chance at a successful career dazzle Kat’s senses and Lucas is faced with a difficult choice: help his friend achieve her dreams . . . or sabotage her chances to keep her in Louisiana.

My review of “The Wishing Season” by Denise Hunter | Stop #13 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

BONUS! Thanks to BookLook Bloggers, you get ONE MORE DAY of Christmas reviews! A Baker’s dozen…

ENJOY!

The first book I read and reviewed in the Chapel Springs series was a complete and total surprise!

Then, of course, I was hooked and had to read the next book and now I’m so excited to read this one!

The Wishing Season was another complete surprise for me!

WHAT A GREAT READ!

I love the story! I love the characters! I love the crazy roller coaster ride of an adventure that you get when you add in one contest, one determined chef and one hard-nosed contractor.

It’s not precisely what I would consider a Christmas story but it is a wonderful winter romance!

Living side-by-side, a fledgling chef and a big-hearted contractor find a delicious attraction.

Trouble is, their chemistry could spoil their dreams.

Spirited PJ McKinley has the touch when it comes to food. Her dream of opening her own restaurant is just one building short of reality. So when a Chapel Springs resident offers her beloved ancestral home to the applicant with the best plan for the house, PJ believes it’s a contest she was meant to win.

Contractor Cole Evans is confident, professional, and swoon-worthy—but this former foster kid knows his life could have turned out very differently. When Cole discovers the contest, he believes his home for foster kids in transition has found its saving grace. All he has to do is convince the owner that an out-of-towner with a not-for-profit enterprise is good for the community.

But when the eccentric philanthropist sees PJ and Cole’s proposals, she makes an unexpected decision: the pair will share the house for a year to show what their ideas are made of. Now, with Cole and the foster kids upstairs and PJ and the restaurant below, day-to-day life has turned into out-and-out competition—with some seriously flirtatious hallway encounters on the side. Turns out in this competition, it’s not just the house on the line, it’s their hearts.
