Book Review | The Courtship Basket by Amy Clipston

OK . . .

I am LOVING this new series by Amy Clipston.

It seems everywhere I look lately, there’s another story about something that spans time . . . family . . . even strangers – to bring people together.

Amy Clipston has a singular talent for writing a wide array of exceptional romance stories . . . from the forbidden to the sweet & simple.

The Courtship Basket is one such romance. Our story focuses on a special basket that brings a happy ever after to at least one couple – maybe more . . .

I can’t wait to read her next book!

I received this book free for an honest review.

More about “The Courtship Basket” from Goodreads:

Years ago, a picnic basket brought two hearts together. For Rachel and Mike, history may be about to repeat itself.

Rachel Fisher is devastated when the young man she’s loved for years leaves her to date her best friend. Her heart is broken, and she has all but given up on love. Rachel is determined to keep her mind off the pain, and she starts teaching at an Amish school for children with learning disabilities.

Since his father became ill, Mike Lantz has been overwhelmed with the responsibility of providing for his family and caring for his six-year-old brother, John. When John joins Rachel’s class and she learns that his mother is deceased and his father sick, she desperately wants to help the family, even with something as simple as a meal.

With her parents’ old picnic basket, Rachel begins sending food to the Lantz family. As the weeks go by, John’s grades start to improve, and the attraction grows between Rachel and Mike. They can’t deny that their friendship is growing toward something more, but both of them are hesitant to risk a more serious relationship. The last thing Rachel wants is another heartbreak, and Mike is worried about providing for his loved ones. Will the two be able to reconcile their past hurts with new hope for the future?

Book Review | “Amish Sweethearts” by Leslie Gould – book 2 in the Neighbors of Lancaster County series

Be aware that this is book 2 in the series. I have not yet reviewed book 1, but I plan to go back and read it… and I recommend you do as well.

I still remember watching a movie made from one of the first Amish stories I read.

A lot of people I knew, thought it was ridiculous that the young man felt compelled to join the military…

They would probably say the same thing here.

Amish or not… when God calls you to do something, you have to make the choice between what you want and what you know God wants you to do.

That is a large part of this story.

And WELL DONE Leslie Gould!

She told the story well… blending the Amish aspects and the English aspects – as well as the military aspects – to form a well crafted story with wonderful characters.

Not a book you should miss… especially if you enjoy Amish fiction!

Of course… I always recommend you read a series in order, so you should definitely check out the first book in this series; Amish Promises.

More about the book:

Can These Two Friends from Opposite Worlds Find Love?

They’ve been best friends for years, but as high school ends, Zane Beck can’t help but look at his Amish neighbor, Lila Lehman, with different eyes. Her controlling father sees only one future for Lila, though, and arranges for her to be courted by an upstanding young Amish man. When Zane sees the two together, his plans for the future crumble, and he impulsively enlists in the Army, following in his father’s footsteps.

However, the passing of years and the distance between them isn’t enough to halt their now hidden feelings for each other. If being together used to be difficult, it’s now impossible, especially with the Amish opposed to war. Zane’s service takes a dramatic turn when he’s sent to Afghanistan. Being on the front line and the reality of taking a life has him questioning whether he can continue to serve or not. But all choices have consequences–both his and hers. With Lila preparing to marry another, will these one-time sweethearts ever find the life together that they both still long for?

I cannot say enough about Rachel Hauck’s AMAZING talent!

She has been immeasurably blessed!

And I am blessed, every time I read one of her amazing books!

I LOVE everything about this book! I love the idea behind it – the wedding chapel that plays into so many different lives…

I’ve always been a sucker for time-travel stories and while this is not a sci-fi type time travel, it certainly has the same feel, since we move back and forth between the present and the past as we follow two different couples and their journey of love!

It is such an exceptional story of life… love… and connection!

Don’t miss out on this wonderful book – or any of Rachel’s others!

{MORE ABOUT THE WEDDING CHAPEL}

The Wedding Chapel(Zondervan, November 2015)

For sixty years, a wedding chapel sat silent, waiting for love. But times have changed and the hour has come when it just might be too late.

Retired hall-of-fame football coach Jimmy “Coach” Westbrook never imagined anything would come of his labor of love—the wedding chapel he built for Collette Greer, the woman he fell for back in ‘49. But now an offer has come to turn the chapel into what it was meant to be—a place for love—and Jimmy sees no reason to hang onto his dream any longer.

Photographer Taylor Branson is trying to make a life for herself in New York. Leaving her hometown of Heart’s Bend, Tennessee, she put a lot of things behind her, including her family’s abysmal marriage rate. But love surprises her when she falls head-over-heels for Jack Forester, a top ad man. Their whirlwind romance results in an elopement, and a mountain of doubt. Jack, while genuine in his love for Taylor, can never seem to overcome his own demons to find the words of his heart.

When Taylor takes an assignment in Heart’s Bend, the job does more than send her back to her hometown, but into a world of family secrets buried beneath the sands of time.

When Taylor’s journey intersects with Coach’s, they rediscover the heartbeat of their dreams and that the love they long to hold is right in front of them. And worth every waiting moment.

WOW!

Before I begin, let me just say – I really really like this cover! The one that is wrapped around my advance paperback is pretty, sure, but the one I’ve used below really catches the eye!

OK . . .  now to what is between the covers.

I LOVE . . . LOVE LOVE LOVE . . . the Harry Potter series.

I don’t know if I ever would have connected all of those dots. Of course, I never saw the Biblical significance in the Narnia stories either – until someone pointed them out to me. That is the brilliance of such stories (or rather – parables).

God has truly given Nicole a vision and I am thrilled she is sharing it with the world!

BOOK REVIEW | Gather Around the Amish Table by Lucy Leid | COOKBOOK

OK… I may not have what it takes to be Amish but I’m pretty sure I can handle eating like the Amish! Of course I don’t have a garden to tend or acres of land to till, plant and tend to so I may have to find some clever ways to imitate the work they do to work off all those calories… otherwise my hips may have a fit on me. LOL!

image

Not too many people in today’s world have the time it takes to make every single thing their family eats from scratch.

More and more often, take-out or boxed meals is the norm… yes, even in our family… but with wonderful resources like this book, at least we have the opportunity to find some new recipes we can try out when we have the time or when we make the time for it anyway.

And the recipes inside pretty much ALL look amazing!

PLUS, the awesomeness of the book does not stop there! Lucy fills the pages with wonderful tips that anyone can use in everyday life. She also sprinkles in some fantastic stories about the people of the plain communities.

In short, this book is a treasure and I am thrilled I was given the opportunity to review it. I can hardly wait to try out the recipes that fill the pages. I may even pop back in with updates for you!

Until then, here are some pretty pictures here… just to tease you – and make you want to go snag a copy so you can start testing out the recipes yourself of course!

Shelley Gray joins up with 3 of her fellow Historical writers to bring us a TRUE treat!

Among the Fair Magnolias is the newest collaboration from Thomas Nelson and it is FANTASTIC!

Shelley Gray gets together with Tamera Alexander, Dorothy Love and Elizabeth Musser to bring us four wonderful Love stories – each with a touch of mystery!

To Mend a Dream by Tamera Alexander is your typical “orphans out on their own, lost their family home, desperate to make a better life for themselves” story. Except it ins’t typical AT ALL! Tamera Alexander hooks you with the first sentence and doesn’t let go until the very last one!

An Outlaw’s Heart by Shelley Gray is a romance with more than one twist. Shelley uses her exceptional talent for romance and combines it with her flair for suspense to intrigue her readers!

A Heart So True by Dorothy Love is a story of the age old problem; Do I follow my heart or my family’s wishes?  I refuse to spoil it for you – it’s JUST TOO GOOD!

Love Beyond Limits by Elizabeth Musser involves a favorite storyline of mine! It’s always a struggle to try and decide whether you should take a chance on love, but when you have the added impossibility of forbidden love, it’s a journey that you DO NOT want to miss!

5star

And here is a bit more about the book from Thomas Nelson:

So when the new owner Aidan Bedford seeks to redecorate the house for his fiancée, Savannah jumps at the opportunity. But can she find the box her father supposedly hid there during the war before her assignment is completed? And before she sees yet another battle lost on the home front—this time, a battle of the heart.

An Outlaw’s Heart by Shelley Gray

Seven years ago Russell Champion was betrayed by the two most important women in his life. Now Russell returns home, but is it too late to make amends with his mother and find closure with his true love?

A Heart So True by Dorothy Love

Abigail Clayton hopes to reconcile with Dr. Wade Bennett and become his wife. But her father insists she marry her distant cousin Charles Kittridge so the plantations of the two families will be joined. With her wedding looming, Abby must choose between duty to her family and the yearnings of her own heart.

Love Beyond Limits by Elizabeth Musser

Emily Derracott loves her childhood friend Thomas McGinnis, but she cannot marry a man who doesn’t share her strong convictions about the freedmen. Besides, she harbors a secret love for someone else. But the prospect of becoming his wife is not only improbable—it is completely impossible.

“The Heart of the Amish” by Suzanne Woods Fisher

WOW! Just WOW! This book could change your life!

As someone who spends a great deal of time reading Amish fiction and visiting with the plain folk… there was not much in this book that I didn’t already know or understand.

But even with that – it was a wonderful read! Suzanne has such a way with words and presentation, that brings a while new level of understanding and appreciation!

This is a book that EVERYONE should read… not just fans of Amish fiction!

Forgiveness is something that is lost much of the time in our modern world and we could all use a good reminder of why it is so important to forgive… every day!

As far as the book is concerned… there’s really too much to say – you would think I’m going just nuts.

I loved every bit of it and I’m thrilled to have been given the opportunity to review it so you can have a chance to check it out too!

DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK!

Here is a brief synopsis from Revell

We have all been hurt and we all have someone we need to forgive. But sometimes it’s hard to let go of our hurt and anger in order to truly forgive and move on.

For the Amish, forgiving others in order to live at peace is woven into the very fabric of their faith. From daily annoyances to heartbreaking tragedy, they exhibit an incredible capacity for forgiveness that often baffles us. How do they do it? And how can we have the same attitude and ability to forgive?

Through true stories gathered from a variety of Amish communities, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher shows you how the Amish are able to release their pain and desire for revenge, and live at peace with others. Her in-depth, personal research uncovers the astounding yet fundamental way the Amish can forgive anyone from the angry customer at the grocery store to the shooter at Nickel Mines. You’ll learn how to invite God into your story, apply lessons from the Amish to your own circumstances, and find the freedom that comes with true forgiveness

Moving to Pennsylvania wasn’t in Madeleine’s original plans. She should still be in California and should have married her pilot fiance a year ago-but death has a way of changing everything.

Now the former Air Force flight nurse is living alone in Paradise, Pennsylvania, and working as a maid at the Lancaster Grand Hotel. She isn’t exactly a widow . . . but she sure feels like one.

Saul Beiler isn’t exactly a widower . . . but his wife is long gone. His eleven-year-old daughter, Emma, doesn’t know that her mother fled the Amish community-and married another man-but she does know that her dat is lonely, and that a pretty young maedel just moved in next door.

Madeline’s numb heart begins to thaw as she spends more time with the innocent and ever optimistic Emma. The stronger her friendship grows with the young girl, the more intrigued Madeline grows about the humble, strong, man raising her on his own.

But even as a strange attraction pulls Saul and Madeleine across a stark cultural divide, they-and everybody else-have to wonder: What could they possibly have in common besides heartache? Will love allow Madeleine to finally find the home she’s been dreaming of all along?

In A Mother’s Secret—the second book in a wonderful Amish series by bestselling author Amy Clipston—Carolyn Lapp dreams of marrying for love. But will the errors of her past destroy this dream forever?

Carolyn Lapp longs to have a traditional Amish family. But she lives on her brother’s farm with her parents and her 15-year old son, Benjamin. Carolyn has never revealed the identity of Benjamin’s father and lives daily with the guilt and shame of her youthful indiscretion. Her brother simply will not forgive her. His answer is to arrange a practical marriage for Carolyn to Saul, a widower with a little girl. But Carolyn isn’t convinced that Saul really loves her and believes he is simply looking for someone to help raise his daughter.

When Benjamin causes trouble at a local horse auction, horse breeder Joshua Glick decides that he must be taught a lesson. Carolyn and Joshua are unmistakably drawn to each other, but Joshua mistakenly assumes that Benjamin is Carolyn’s brother. Carolyn fears that if he discovers the truth, her past will destroy their budding romance.

After years of shame and loneliness, Carolyn suddenly has two men vying for her attention. But which of them will give her the family—and the unconditional love—she’s longed for?

October Baby – A more touching movie I’ve never seen…

This movie touched me so deeply – I’m not even sure there are words to describe it.

Years ago, a story was shared with me about an abortion survivor – something that I was not even aware was possible. This movie brought every bit of that raw emotion right back to me.

I know a little bit about being unwanted… I was not a survivor of a failed abortion but I was a survivor of a failed marriage – and a child unwanted by her father.

Even now, thirty-five years later, my father and I only have a relationship at all because of my children… and – while I am thrilled to say that I have forgiven him – he will most likely never admit there is anything that needs forgiveness. For myself and my children, I have let go of that bitterness and our lives are so much better because of it.

I CHOOSE LIFE!

Every Life is Beautiful and we live in a society that seems to have forgotten that. It’s easy to proclaim yourself as pro-choice… but remember that YOU ARE HERE so clearly your parents were PRO-LIFE!

Aside from that, the movie itself was beyond amazing – absolutely believable, excellent flow and pacing, superb acting, spectacular staging and filming. How can I give it 10 stars… 20!

A MUST SEE Movie!

DON’T MISS the special features! There are some AMAZING extras included that just may elicit an emotional response that rivals the movie’s.

More about the movie from AMAZON:

You saw me before I was born.” Psalm 139:16 (NLT)

As the curtain rises, Hannah hesitantly steps onto the stage for her theatrical debut in college. Yet before she can utter her first lines, Hannah-unscripted-collapses in front of the stunned audience.

After countless medical tests, all signs point to one underlying factor: Hannah’s difficult birth. This revelation is nothing compared to what she then learns from her parents: she was actually adopted … after a failed abortion attempt. Bewildered, angered, and confused, Hannah turns for support to Jason, her oldest friend.

Encouraged by his adventurous spirit, Hannah joins his group of friends on a Spring Break road trip, embarking on a journey to discover her hidden past … and find hope for her unknown future.

In the midst of her incredible journey, Hannah finds that life can be so much more than what you have planned.

You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. by Ben Carson MD

WOW!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

Ben Carson is not only a gifted surgeon, he is a wonderful writer – funny, interesting and this book is exceptionally difficult to put down.

Even the descriptions of brain surgery, which should be nothing but gross, had my complete attention because they were phrased in such a way that made them interesting but not at all gross or disgusting.

And the stories about Dr. Carson’s mother… WOW!

No wonder he is such an intelligent and learned man – she is clearly a GENIUS!

I refuse to spoil the book for you but please take my word for it – it is a FANTASTIC book! A MUST READ! And not just for teens either… parents will get so much out of this book too!

Here is a brief synopsis from Thomas Nelson:

Throughout his life, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson has needed to overcome many obstacles: His father leaving the family; being considered stupid by his classmates in grade school; growing up in inner-city Detroit; and having a violent temper. But Dr. Carson didn’t let his circumstances control him, and instead discovered eight principles that helped shape his future.

In You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to Think Big, Dr. Carson unpacks the eight important parts of Thinking Big–Talent, Honesty, Insight, being Nice, Knowledge, Books, In-Depth learning, and God–and presents the stories of people who demonstrated those things in his life. By applying the idea of T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. to your life, and by looking at those around you as well, you too can overcome obstacles and work toward achieving your dreams.

A LOOK BACK at “Princess Ever After” by Rachel Hauck | Royal Weddings series #2 | Review Marathon!

"Princess Ever After" by Rachel Hauck

THIS COVER IS PERFECT! It just screams Princess! to me.

I LOVE IT!

And the story is just as perfect!

I said it before when I reviewed the book, and I’ll say it again! (and if you really want to read that review, click HERE)

Rachel Hauck is an AMAZING author!

In “Once Upon A Prince”, we read all about Suzanna giving herself over to God – to do with as He chose.

That aspect of faith is a bit more of a struggle for the characters in “Princess Ever After” but they do finally manage to “let go and let God” and the story is so much better for it!

BRAVO to Rachel Hauck for her fantastic story telling! God has truly blessed her!

The continuing story Rachel Hauck has written is definitely one of my favorite series!

The characters will grab your heart right away and will not let go! The story is so intense, you won’t want to put the book down for even a minute. And the message… well it’s absolutely amazing!

I can hardly wait to share my thoughts about the next book in the series! Oh my word! Make sure you pop back over tomorrow for my review.

And DON’T MISS any books in this terrific series!

But an unexpected visitor and the discovery of a fairytale, drawn by her great-grandma, causes Regina to wonder if she might be destined for something more.

Tanner Burkhardt, Minister of Culture for the Grand Duchy of Hessenberg, must convince the strong-willed Southerner, Miss Beswick, that she is his country’s long-lost princess. Failure could destroy his reputation and change his nation forever.

As Regina and Tanner face the challenges before them, neither are prepared for love to invade their hearts and change every thing they believe about themselves.

However, when a royal opponent nearly destroys Regina’s future, she must lean into God and trust He has sovereignly brought her to her true and final destiny.

A LOOK BACK at “A March Bride” by Rachel Hauck | Royal Weddings series #1.5 | Review marathon!

20140228-153818.jpg

Well, I have to admit – reading over my initial review was a bit… odd.

Anyone who read it the first time around – knows that.

For anyone who has not read it, you can click HERE if you’re curious.

OK… now, having said that – I’m going to try to do the review justice again.

If you read my review yesterday, you know I came late to this wonderful series and it seems like I had to wait forever to read the next chapter in Nathaniel and Susanna’s romance!”

I was also tickled to find out that this wonderful story will be available in March of this year in a PAPER book with two other wonderful stories in the Year of Weddings series!

Now on to my review…

I am reminded yet again that Rachel Hauck is a GREAT writer! WOW!

You could not have pried the tablet out of my hand! while I was reading A March Bride

Every trial, every misstep, every twist and turn of this amazing story shows you that Rachel Hauck is in tune with precisely how God’s plans work!

We think our own stumbling blocks are just that. And sometimes… maybe… they are – because we have to stumble to look up.

Each trial you have in your own life, whether it is part of God’s plan or not, will help get you on your way to the destination God has in mind for you, and I LOVE that Rachel has that in mind when she’s writing these stories.

In fact, God is central to her novels in a way unlike most others you will read. It’s AMAZING! God has truly gifted Rachel Hauck with such an amazing gift!

The only complaint I have about this book is that there wasn’t more of it!

Whether you enjoyed Once Upon A Prince or not, A March Bride is a MUST READ! – Tweet this!

Now onto the next story in this amazing series!

Here’s a bit more about A March Bride from Zondervan:

Susanna has found her true prince, and their happily ever after is just around the corner. But when Nate asks her to give up something precious to her, Susanna can’t help but wonder if it’s a sign that their love is not meant to be.

Susanna Truitt (Once Upon A Prince) is three weeks from royalty. She’ll soon marry King Nathaniel II of Brighton Kingdom. But when the government insists she renounce her American citizenship before the wedding, coupled with the lack of involvement by family and friends, Susanna’s heart begins to doubt whether this marriage is God’s plan for her.

Nathaniel would do anything for his bride-to-be. But he knows his position requires that she give up a lot to be with him. Her life will never be her own—right down to her very identity.

When she travels home to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, right before the wedding, Nathaniel fears she won’t return. Gathering his courage, he devises a plan to win his bride all over again, and together they seek out a kingdom to treasure above all.

A year’s worth of novellas from twelve inspirational romance authors. Happily ever after guaranteed.

A LOOK BACK at “Once Upon A Prince” by Rachel Hauck | Royal Weddings series #1 | Review marathon!

20140218-120448.jpg

Yes I’ve reviewed this book before and if you’re interested, you can read that review HERE.

I can still remember how crazy I was over this series when I read Once Upon A Prince for the first time!

I was definitely in danger of turning into a giggling, gushing, fan-girl over the book… the story… the series!

It had been out for over a year before I skimmed through it at the insistence of my mother and I later kicked myself for only skimming.

Oh what I missed that first time through…

WHAT an amazing story!

WHAT a wonderful idea!

AND SO MUCH better than a silly story of magic slippers or enchanted spinning wheels.

Like so many other young girls, I grew up on fairy tales and it took me one failed marriage and several failed relationships to admit that believing in fairy tales was not such a good thing for a grown-woman but “Once Upon A Prince” is a real-life fairy tale that I can get behind.

You’re still left with a story book feel and you still end up with a happy ending (I feel no danger in revealing that because it’s not the one you’ll be expecting and… the book has been out a while now) but it really feels real through and through.

BRAVO Rachel Hauck!

And now I get to jump right into the next story… and the next until I get to Rachel’s NEWEST book in this wonderful series! SO there is a bit of a bonus for me waiting so long to really read the book. I don’t have to sit on tacks while I wait for book 2. YAY!

Don’t forget to pop back over tomorrow to read my review of the next book in the series!

Don’t miss the book that started it all – Once Upon A Prince by Rachel Hauck!Tweet this!

And just in case you need more convincing, here’s what GoodReads has to say about Once Upon A Prince:

“Once Upon a Prince, the first novel in the Royal Wedding series by bestselling author Rachel Hauck, treats you to a modern-day fairy tale.”
~ GoodReads

Susanna Truitt never dreamed of a great romance or being treated like a princess—just to marry the man she has loved for twelve years. But life isn’t going according to plan. When her high-school-sweetheart-turned-Marine-officer breaks up instead of proposing, Susanna scrambles to rebuild her life.

The last thing Prince Nathaniel expects to find on his American holiday to St. Simon’s Island is the queen of his heart. A prince has duties, and his family’s tense political situation has chosen his bride for him. When Prince Nathaniel comes to Susanna’s aid under the fabled Lover’s Oak, he is blindsided by love.

Their lives are worlds apart. He’s a royal prince. She’s a ordinary girl. But everything changes when Susanna receives an invitation to Nathaniel’s coronation.

It’s the ultimate choice. His kingdom or her heart? God’s will or their own?

“A Simple Charity” by Rosalind Lauer | Book 3 in the Lancaster Crossroads series | Stop #14 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

OK, this book totally works in my Salute to Christmas Reads! Which is AWESOME! …mostly because the book is awesome and I want to give it as much attention as I possibly can!

A Simple Charity by Rosalind Lauer

WOW!

I didn’t think Rosalind Lauer could get any better! But it seems like every book of hers I read is even better than the last one!

With the first three books Rosalind wrote; A Simple Winter, A Simple Spring and A Simple Autumn – Rosalind introduced us to the wonderful community of Halfway and I didn’t get the chance to freak about it because I didn’t actually discover her wonderful books until the second series had already started.

I did start by reading the first series and then I was blessed to be able to go right into the next… until I had to wait for this one – A Simple Charity.

And now I’m freaking out because I don’t want it to end!

I’m hoping that either Rosalind has more planned for this series or else she’s going to start another series but with these same characters! They’re too amazing to let go of!

And Rosalind Lauer has a particular talent for blending the Amish community with the English community that makes her books so much more appealing. For those of us who don’t necessarily want to make such a drastic change, it’s exciting to think that we could just move into the community and live alongside the plain people.

It’s certainly on my own wish list!

Of course it’s also tricky because I have fallen completely and totally in love with THESE people and THIS community! It’s just too well-written! Rosalind makes her characters so real, I feel like I could go to Halfway and meet them all!

Oh well… I’ll just have to be content with them in my imagination.

In the meantime, you can find more about this book HERE on the book page at Random House

And here is a little sneak peek from Random House

OF ALL THE GIFTS THAT LAST,
THE GREATEST IS CHARITY.

Although she is still in her twenties, Fanny Lapp has known a lifetime of love and heartache. Twice widowed, she has a home to maintain, a renovation in the works, and a family to raise—all without a husband. Fortunately, in the Amish community, help is never far away. To ease Fanny’s burdens, the bishop sends Zed Miller to the Lapp house. Fanny is drawn to kind, handsome Zed, who suffers from sins of the past. But to everything there is a season, and Fanny cannot act on her feelings while mourning her husband.

Newly returned to his Amish roots after many years in the outside world, Zed knows he must prove himself to earn acceptance from his community. Without a second thought, he picks up a hammer and sets to work helping Fanny fulfill her dream of turning an old carriage house into a women’s childbirth center. Soon Zed finds himself a part of Fanny’s daily chores, sharing her laughter and sorrow. Knowing that time flows like a river, running slow and steady, Zed plans to wait on his love. But when their secret is discovered, how deep will the disapproval of their community run?

A Mom’s Prayers For Her Son by Rob and Joanna Teigen

They say it takes a village to raise a child…

Well Rob and Joanna Teigen certainly have shared the advice of a “village” worth of experts – and in this case “expert” does not only mean someone who has been taught, tested and certified in the “study” of children.

In the case of A Mom’s Prayers For Her Son, “expert” means other parents, pastors and fellow authors.

If you are a mother…or you know a mother who has a young son, this book is an excellent choice!

There are some mothers who are simply gifted in the area of prayer. We all know them – they’re the ones we ask constantly what they pray about, how we should pray, will they pray for us…

This book is for those of us who are NOT so gifted.

Sometimes you just don’t know what to pray about and if you are a mother, you really need to know!

So buy this book, read this book, and do whatever you need to do to implement this book into your daily prayer routine!

Your son will thank you. His future wife will thank you! People you’ve never met before will one day thank you!

Praying for sons (and daughters) is one of the most important things we as parents can do!

Here is what Baker Publishing says about A Mom’s Prayers For Her Son:

When a mother looks into the eyes of her son for the first time, her heart is filled with love–and questions. “How do I raise a boy? What struggles will he go through? What kind of a man will he grow up to be?” She wants to pray for her son, but may not know just what to pray for.

Now the couple who brought you “A Dad’s Prayers for His Daughter “turns to a mother’s unique relationship with her son. They assure Mom that even if she isn’t always sure what kind of support her son needs, God always knows.

Providing specific prayers moms can use, along with stories from other moms about how God has answered their prayers for their sons, Rob and Joanna Teigen give women a strong foundation to build a lifelong habit of prayer for their sons.

They also explain a little more about boys and what they need to learn growing up, including character, courage, self-control, forgiveness, and more, so a mom can pray for every area of her son’s life.

Christmas At Holly Hill by Martha Rogers | Stop #5 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

Can you go home again? is one of the classic questions that we see in books and movies alike.

And…more often than not, it is the one where we see the most interesting story lines!

Christmas At Holly Hill
is no exception to that.

I REALLY hope to see more Christmas books from Martha Rogers!

I have read many stories with this sort of theme and this is certainly among the best!

Martha has a way with words and with characters and their stories!

From the moment Clayton steps off the train, we are “with him” emotionally.

I’m not about to ruin anything for you but Martha writes the story so well – it’s impossible not to put yourself in the characters’ shoes.

Again… Well done Martha! An exceedingly well-written book.

I said it before and I’ll say it again. I LOVE finding new authors!

And I hope to see many more wonderful books by such a talented author!

A bit more about Christmas At Holly Hill:

Can Clayton Barlow prove he has changed his ways in time for Christmas?

It is October 1898, and Clayton Barlow has just returned home after serving time in prison for his part in a bank robbery. His family welcomes him, but the townspeople are skeptical. Bored with life in the small town but determined to make a new start, he goes to work with his father, hoping to regain the town’s trust.

Clayton recognizes the schoolteacher at the Prairie Grove School as his childhood friend, Merry Lee Warner, and old feelings surface. Still, he doubts that he could ever get a woman like Merry to love him.

As the townspeople prepare for Christmas, their suspicions about Clayton lead to trouble. Will the trusting heart of an unlikely new friend be enough to restore Clayton’s relationships with his neighbors and reunite him with God and Merry?

Sad… the Lone Star Brides series is coming to an end with “A Matter of Heart” by Tracie Peterson

A Matter of HeartThis is the third book in Tracie Peterson‘s Lone Star Brides series.

I have now read all three of them now and let me just say…

WOW!

Each story is better than the last – not always how it works.

A Matter of Heart is another great read!

Such powerful emotions, such great stories, such strong characters – and how she comes up with so many different ones who are similar in some ways but still so very different… well, it’s only one of the things that makes her such an amazing author!

Unlike my experience with the first book in this series; I didn’t even bother to read any of the other silly reviews for this book.

And I do believe that Tracie’s sales speak for themselves!

I have a whole new outlook on Texas and I have to say that…even though I absolutely detest heat, I just have to see it someday soon!

Of course it won’t be the same… but worth it all the same, I’m sure!

Once again I am thrilled to say that God is interwoven into the story in a perfect way! So many Christian fiction books are either too preachy or there’s not nearly enough of God in the story for it to truly work as a Christian fiction novel.

And I know I’ve said it before but it has to be said again. It’s so much more believable for me as far as history goes because… Historically speaking… people were more religious. So it’s more believable, more accurate and it’s more interesting!

The book is a new favorite of mine and I’m sad to see that it’s the last one. Although I’m hopeful she has more series in the works already!

I LOVE finding New authors!!! | Do not miss the third book in Martha Rogers (The Homeward Journey) series : “Love Never Fails”

Martha Rogers has written a wonderful story!

And Love Never Fails could not be more aptly named.

This story is definitely not typical, even if we can see romance coming from a mile away…

As so often happens in real life, the couple who is unexpectedly thrown together, come to the table with opposite ideas and expectations – he thinking his military background and handsome uniform will draw the attention he hopes to gain from a pretty young woman he remembers, she thinking that the young man who teased her so many years ago has no grown up and might provide an interesting foil for what might otherwise be a somewhat tedious visit.

The results of their attraction and flirtation is anything but what they’re expecting.

It’s hard to tell if the historical details of this story or the romantic sizzle is the bigger draw… but one thing is clear; the story is intriguing and it will capture you attention immediately.

Martha also includes the wonderful message of God’s love within the story – and she does it without being preachy or heavy-handed. It is simply a part of their lives and their journey and that is not always an easy thing to do.

Well done Martha!

A very well-written book. And now I find myself eager to find more books by Martha Rogers!

I LOVE finding new authors!

A bit more about Love Never Fails:

At odds over their beliefs and separated by the war, Molly and Stefan must learn to depend of God.

In book three of the Homeward Journey series, Manfred and Sallie Whiteman’s daughter Molly finishes school and returns to her home to teach. When old friends of her parents come for a visit with their son, Stefan, Molly is attracted to the young man, but all he is interested in is talking about his position in the army. When he leaves to rejoin his regiment, Molly is both relieved and saddened.

Can they overcome their differences and find love?

Shelley Shepard Gray has been holding out on us! | My thoughts on her new novel: “Secrets of Sloane House”

Granted I’ve only been reading Shelley Shepard Gray’s books for a little over a year but I feel certain that I did not know she had this in her.

I’m not a huge fan of mystery or suspense but when it’s Shelley Shepard Gray, it HAS TO BE worth reading! So I gave it a try and WOW!

Or I suppose I should say… Shelley Gray.

Secrets of Sloane House is an OUTSTANDING read!

Aw man… now I’m going to have to go read her Amish suspense series aren’t I…

I’m just kidding! After reading Secrets of Sloane House…
I really WANT TO!

I don’t know if she was intrigued by Historical mysteries before she wrote Amish or if writing about the buggies and bonnets crowd that drew her to this genre as well but I am not surprised in the least that this book is written so well!

I will say that I truly hope she continues to WOW us with her wonderful Amish romances but I am certainly not opposed to seeing more books of this type too!

I understand there us another “Chicago World’s Fair” coming soon and I find myself very excited about that one now too!

Not many authors can paint a picture like Shelley Shepard Gray. She is one author who will undoubtedly do very well – no matter what genre she is writing!

An author to keep your eyes on!

And here is a bit more about the book from Zondervan:

One woman’s search for the truth of her sister’s disappearance leads her to deceit and danger in 1893 Chicago.

Rosalind Perry has left her family’s rural farm in Wisconsin to work as a housemaid at Sloane House, one of the most elegant mansions in Gilded Age Chicago. However, Rosalind is not there just to earn a living and support her family—she’s at Sloane House determined to discover the truth about her sister’s mysterious disappearance.

Reid Armstrong is the handsome heir to a silver fortune. However, his family is on the periphery of Chicago’s elite because their wealth comes from “new money” obtained from successful mining. Marriage to Veronica Sloane would secure his family’s position in society—the lifelong dream of his ailing father.

When Reid begins to realize that Rosalind’s life may be in danger, he stops thinking of marriage prospects and concentrates on helping Rosalind. Dark things are afoot in Chicago and, he fears, in Sloane House. If he’s not vigilant, Rosalind could pay the price.

Set against the backdrop of Chicago’s Gilded Age and the 1893 World’s Fair, Secrets of Sloane House takes us on a whirlwind journey of romance and mystery.

I LOVE finding New authors!!! | Do not miss Marta Perry’s NEW book: “The Forgiven” | Book 1 in her new “Keepers of the Promise” series!

What a WONDERFUL story! A page in and I was HOOKED! WOW!

Thank goodness we have every book of her Pleasant Valley novels! I won’t have to hunt them down to read them all. Of course we don’t have every book of hers but I’m going to be on the lookout!

And so should you!

Marta Perry is a masterful storyteller and she will pull you right in!

Wonderful story! Intriguing history! Excellent characters!

Just an all-around GREAT book!

Now I’m chomping at the bit to get my hands on the next one! LOL!

Susan Meissner nailed it when she said “Skillfully weaves the past and the present in a heart-stirring tale.”

DO NOT miss this book and do not miss any of her others! As delightful an author as Marta Perry is, I can not imagine even one of her books not being just as fantastic a read!

And it’s not just the writing I love. The very idea of someone storing up memories from the family’s past to share – well, not enough of us do that. And even among the ones who do, not enough of them get around to bringing the rest of the family in on their history.

And making the focus of the story an Amish family – perfect! Who better to show holding on to their precious family history!

READ IT!

A bit more about the story from Penguin:

When three women, all cousins, are given the task of sorting through the treasures of several generations of their Amish family, they each discover a story from the past that provides insights and inspiration for their own lives.

Central Pennsylvania, current day. Rebecca Fisher gladly accepted her husband Paul’s dreams as her own, but now that he has passed away, she’s struggling to raise two children and keep her home. Renting her stable to carpenter Matthew Byler offers a partial solution—even though Matthew has a troubled history, having sometimes failed to embrace Amish beliefs. As Matthew seeks to prove himself, Rebecca realizes how dependent she has become on others. Where can she find the courage to grow and change?

Lancaster County, 1941. As war threatens, Anna Esch pours her experiences into her diary. Her world seems to crumble as neighbors turn against the Amish and her love, Jacob, is sent to a camp far away for refusing to fight. She can’t know, as she grows from a girl into a woman during a time of trouble and grief, that one day another Amish woman will gain strength from the words she writes and will learn that she, too, can become a keeper of the promise.

“The Legend of the Candy Cane” by Lori Walburg

Not at all what I was expecting…

When I read the word “hardcover”, I assumed it was a regular hardcover book but what arrived in the mail was a board book.

Imagine my surprise…

Regardless of my surprise, my children LOVE it! Even though it is simple enough for a very young child to enjoy, my children (who are 8 and 11) are enchanted with the beautiful story inside!

My daughter has claimed it for her very own. She took it OFF of my shelf and proudly carried it to her own, where she gave it a place of honor.

My son is not quite as possessive of it but he stood over her shoulder as she read and did not once have a comment about it being a “baby” book – which is his usual comment about any book his sister who is three years younger, picks up to read.

Not that I can blame him… since he is reading on a high school level already.

But I think it says a lot about how wonderful the story within!

I am actually excited! Now, instead of donating the book, we have what will become an heirloom!

Exciting!

And no… we don’t have any other board books we will be able to pass on, none of them survived my own children. I’m so very thankful they are both learning to appreciate books now – being cautious with them and cherishing their favorites.

And The Legend of the Candy Cane is clearly already a favorite!

Here is a bit more about the book from Zondervan:

One dark November night a stranger rides into a small prairie town.

Who is he? Why has he come?

The townspeople wish he were a doctor, a dressmaker, or a trader. But the children have the greatest wish of all, a deep, quiet, secret wish. Then a young girl named Lucy befriends the newcomer.

When he reveals his identity and shares with her the legend of the candy cane, she discovers fulfillment of her wishes and the answer to her town’s dreams. Now will she share what she has learned?

Warm, lavish illustrations by James Bernardin bring to life a timeless tale by Lori Walburg, a story that will help families celebrate the mystery and miracle of Christmas—for many Christmases to come.
