Halo Found Hope by Helo Matzelle | A story of hope, healing and a heroic journey of faith!

This story of hope and faith in the midst of great physical and medical adversity is sure to encourage you in your faith. Helo Matzelle’s Halo Found Hope is a must-read. Machines beeping, the blur of medical staff running, a crash cart whizzing into an ICU room—was there any hope? Halo Found Hope is the story of a beautiful, busy wife and mother of three whose life changes instantly with the diagnosis of a rare brain tumor.

Halo Found Hope

A story of hope… and miracles… and life.

This is exactly how I would describe Halo Found Hope, the memoir of Helo Matzelle..

Try to imagine what you would do if you were told you have a brain tumor – I can’t honestly imagine how I would take news like this. How would I tell my family? How would news of a brain tumor affect my faith?

Halo Found Hope is an inspiring story of a young woman who, after a diagnosis of a brain tumor, lives through some very intense moments. I have a lot of respect for a woman who goes through such a serious surgery, then after coming through it without an incident – just to suffer way more than expected when her brain began to swell, causing one problem after another.

But this book is about much more than just a rare, one-in-a-million type of brain tumor and how it affects Helo and her family, it is about how God reveals himself to her – and how her faith is tried – and how she survives the problems that occurred after the brain surgery and the trials she faced on her journey back to the life she previously lived.

If you want your faith to grow, read Helo’s story… I heartily recommend it.

OK... yes, this one gets 5 stars too. I may have to go back and give the first one 5 stars too...

Halo Found Hope(December 2014)

Machines beeping, the blur of medical staff running, a crash cart whizzing into an ICU room—was there any hope?

A young woman lay, packed in ice, as doctors attempted to somehow stop the swelling in her brain that threatened to take her life… and her family waited.

Six days turned into eight weeks. She awoke to discover that she was not the same. She saw two of everything, couldn’t feel half of her face, couldn’t hear from one ear, and could not speak. She couldn’t even tell anyone that she felt hopeless… or could she?

Halo Found Hope is the story of a beautiful, busy wife, and mother of three whose life changes instantly with the diagnosis of a rare brain tumor. An exceptional ENT, a brilliant neurosurgeon and a dedicated medical team tackle the tumor, setting off a series of unbelievable miracles. Helo’s story is not one of survival, or of salvaging a life through a broken body. It is not about endurance through pain, but victory because of it. While the family heard her silence, God heard her prayer. Helo’s story is simply this: Wherever you are and whatever you are going through, God is right there. He doesn’t need to be recognized by you, to be there for you. He can replace fear with courage and discouragement with determination, if you let Him. Helo did, and that is how she found hope.

A natural reviewer…?

Yup… I once dated one of those guys.

At least he was nice enough to wait until we left the theater before he started picking the movie to pieces.

The irony…

Now, years later… I find myself doing the exact same thing.

Why? Because I finally got why he did it.

There are some really fantastic movies out there – and it is absolutely possible to watch them and turn off the critic in your head and just… enjoy.

But when the credits roll, you start thinking. And when you think, you realize there are things that happened during the movie that essentially make the presumption that you – as the watcher – are an idiot.

And so you analyze and you point out the obvious flaws and you pick it to pieces… all the whole hoping that people you watched it with, “get it” too.

And I could go on… and on… and on…

But I won’t. I’ll stop right there and say this – I believe this is one thing that makes me a natural book reviewer.

And you know exactly what I mean…

There is a very thick line of difference between those of us who are natural reviewers and those of us who just review books.

Those who are natural reviewers can spin a tale about the wonders that take place between the pages – without giving away important plot points or telling the read how the story ends!

We don’t just analyze the tale – we pour our heart and soul into the words we pen (or type in most cases) about the beloved books we read day after day – time and time again!

We don’t just tell you what we did or did not like about it – we regale you with descriptions of our own experience with the story, the characters, the setting, the wondrous ending.

We let you in to our own hearts and minds and souls so that you can see how the book touched us and why.

Some of us even write our reviews as a bit of a story in itself. We seek to entertain as much as the writer of the book we are imploring you to give a chance!

“The Faces of Cancer” by Sarah Price

“The Faces of Cancer” is a story of the hard journey of a very courageous woman.

Sarah Price has been down a similar road as many other women in this world – and she has penned a tome of encouragement and hope for those still to come.

She shares her experiences along a difficult path with us; using humor and an upbeat outlook that amazes me.

I’ve not been through cancer of any kind personally but I can not imagine that I would be able to handle it as well as Sarah has.

Although a big part of the book is Sarah’s message – that with God, anything is possible!

An excellent read – whether you’re facing a similar diagnosis, you’ve already been through the same thing or know someone who has, or even if you’ve never had any association with cancer at all.

4 Stars

And here is what Amazon has to say about The Faces of Cancer:

In May 2013, best-selling author of Amish fiction, Sarah Price, learned that she had breast cancer. From hearing “we caught it early” to almost having Stage 3 breast cancer that had spread throughout her lymph nodes, Sarah Price fought it with humor and acceptance, her faith in God’s plan stronger than her fear of cancer. After multiple complications (that are still on-going), she wrote this to help inspire others who are dealing with cancer, whether as the patient or as the family/friend providing support.

Mixed with Scripture and prayer, this story is about one woman’s struggle to balance her cancer diagnosis with the concern from family and her thousands of friends on social media who read and love her books. Readers will finish this book and know that God gives us what we can handle and, if you look at situations with a Sarah Price attitude, you will find that nothing can be too heavy for our shoulders.

Have you ever considered adoption?

I met Jody not too long at a workshop she held in one of our local libraries.

I admit, I had never stopped to think about the roller-coaster ride that can be the road to adoption…but The Eye of Adoption has shown me.

It has also shown how having an amazing attitude can make the journey one that will change you – yes – but for the better.

Even the cover shows this unique contrast. You see the wind whipped clouds above a relatively calm sea of soothing blue and white and all you have to do is step in…

Once upon a time I considered the idea of adoption (as I was told by several doctors that I would never have children naturally) but God had other plans for me.

But… WOW! Am I glad I read this book!

Jody Cantrell Dyer has a wonderful outlook and a delightful sense of humor about the whole experience.

Whether you are considering adoption or not… read this book!

Jody takes us through every step of her journey with humor and helpful advice and she does it in such a way that shows us all the difficulties of the journey while making us laugh and feel joy with her!

What a wonderful gift this book would make for anyone in your life who is considering adoption!

Here is what GoodReads has to say about “The Eye of Adoption”:

“No one just adopts.” From the very first steps of acknowledging adoption as a choice to the final document that seals the deal, Jody Cantrell Dyer paints a raw, warm, heartbreaking and eventually triumphant portrayal that narrates the entire adoption process through compassionate and humorous prose.

Dyer’s candor and soul color each page of The Eye of Adoption. She directly addresses the sorrows of infertility and the demands of adoption while consistently word-weaving a life rope of assurance, humor, and optimism for her readers.

A middle-aged wife, mother, and teacher, Dyer “tells it like it is” in hopes that waiting adoptive parents, birthparents, adoptees, and those close to them will find kinship through her story.

A MUST READ for every parent – whether you have girls or not | “Raising a Princess” by John Croyle

Raising A Princess by John CroyleFair warning: This book may make those of you with tender hearts – cry… hard.

Not all of us are called to be an advocate for children but all of us who follow Christ should do everything they can to stand up for and help any child who is not being treated the way they should – even if all we can do about that treatment is pray!

No. It’s not enough to just be a good parent to your own children, although that is one good way to show others how children should be treated.

It’s also very important to raise up our children the way we want them to raise up their own.

If more parents were properly informed of how to be the parent that God calls us to be, there would be a lot less children in need of wonderful organizations like the Big Oak Ranch.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to EVERY parent! Having said that, it really doesn’t matter if you have children yet or not and it doesn’t matter if you have children but only boys…

Boys need the principles in this book just as much as girls. They also need to know to look for a young woman with all of these principles to marry one day. And they need to know how to incorporate these principles in their own children one day.

I feel it would be beneficial reading for parents who might not have had the best childhood themselves.

After reading this book with tears running down my cheeks, I realized that I was just as much in need of these principles as my daughter. I have spent so much of my life thinking very little of myself – because I listened, far too much, to the people in the world. Unfortunately the world is, far too often, full of people who do everything they can to drag you down.

And I didn’t have a clue that I needed to be praiseworthy, righteous, stable… I never knew how important it was to have a servant’s heart or Christ-like character. Nobody taught me – and it wasn’t really my mother’s fault either because nobody taught her either. And my dad is another story that I won’t go into here…

But since I became a mother, I have finally begun to follow God’s leading in my heart and in my life and with that has come a greater understanding of what being a mother means according to his word.

And I feel that this book will be a tremendous help in that endeavor. As it would be for any other parent who is trying to raise a Proverbs 31 woman!

5star

What B&H has to say about Raising a Princess:

The Bible’s frequently referenced chapter of Proverbs 31 defines godly womanhood.

In Raising a Princess, greatly respected child advocate John Croyle asks, “How do you equip a daughter to become the kind of woman who is described in Proverbs 31?” After all, a woman like that doesn’t appear out of nowhere. Somebody taught her to rise before dawn to provide for her household. Somebody gave her the moral compass to reach out her hand to the needy. Somebody taught her the business principles that made it possible for her to consider a field and buy it. Perhaps most importantly, somebody gave her a sufficiently strong sense of self that made it possible for her to go out and make a huge impact on the world around her.

Raising a Princess begins with the end in mind. The end is the Proverbs 31 woman; Croyle keeps her squarely in view as he looks at what parenting techniques help the reader to raise a princess who will someday be a queen. Based on Croyle’s life and experience parenting more than 1,800 abused and neglected children at Big Oak Ranch, alongside his two biological children, the book is organized around eight virtues a parent can build in his or her princess:

P: Praiseworthiness
R: Righteousness
I: Initiative
N: Nurturing
C: Character
E: Empowered
S: Servant-Hearted
S: Stability

A True Account of an Amish Wedding | AND a GREAT story! WOW!

An Amish Wedding Invitation by Serena B MillerSerena B Miller was blessed to have made some very good friends among the Amish community who helped her to research her first novel Love Finds You in Sugarcreek Ohio and she was further blessed to receive an invitation to their daughter’s upcoming wedding.

She has written a wonderful account of that day (and a few of the events leading up to that wonderful day as well).

And I must say that it reads just as beautifully as her fiction.

Although it is clearly a true account.

Not only that, Serena really shows a unique understanding of the community and their ways. The wedding day, the ceremony and the celebration that followed were nothing like Serena was expecting and she handles those unexpected revelations with grace and a sense of humor.

Through her eyes we see the intricacies and the delicate handling of what so many of us in the “world” see as nothing more than an event meant to impress.

Clearly the Amish understand that the day is about celebrating and not about impressing anyone. They see it as a time to come together and enjoy each other’s company and fellowship and Serena shows us all of that with her beautifully crafted recounting.

As far as I can tell, the story is only available as an eBook but it’s .99 on Amazon so the price can’t be beat. Anyone who can and who is even remotely interested in Amish culture, should definitely buy it and read it!

5star

Here is what GoodReads has to say about the book:

Amish fiction author Serena B. Miller takes you “behind the barn door” in this true e-short account of her experience of attending an Amish wedding. In her years of researching her Amish novels, Serena Miller has gotten to know several Amish families in Holmes County, Ohio. When she was invited to attend the wedding of one of her friend’s daughters, she expected it to be a casual affair: muck out the barn, throw a potluck together, send the bride and groom off on their honeymoon in a buggy with a Just Married sign hung on the back. But when the young bride shyly brings her a formal, professionally printed invitation, she realized everything she thought she knew about Amish weddings was wrong.

From the hand-arranged centerpieces—made from flowers the bride grew herself—to the portable kitchens the family rents to the elaborate and formally served meal, she realized that every detail of this wedding has been carefully and beautifully orchestrated by a bride and a society that cares very deeply about marriage. On the day of the wedding, Serena sits through the three-hour sermon preached entirely in German, after which the ceremony itself lasts under two minutes. She sees the grace with which the bride cooks for and serves her guests, and then stays to clean up after everyone has gone home. She is inspired by the way every member of the community seems to have some role to play in the event.

Serena, a pastor’s wife, has attended hundreds of weddings, and draws comparisons between the overblown weddings she normally attends and this “simple” wedding. She is inspired by the immensity of the vows this young couple is making—not just to each other, but to their community—and the faithfulness of the community that puts the focus on the marriage far more than the wedding itself.
