A LOOK BACK at “A March Bride” by Rachel Hauck | Royal Weddings series #1.5 | Review marathon!

20140228-153818.jpg

Well, I have to admit – reading over my initial review was a bit… odd.

Anyone who read it the first time around – knows that.

For anyone who has not read it, you can click HERE if you’re curious.

OK… now, having said that – I’m going to try to do the review justice again.

If you read my review yesterday, you know I came late to this wonderful series and it seems like I had to wait forever to read the next chapter in Nathaniel and Susanna’s romance!”

I was also tickled to find out that this wonderful story will be available in March of this year in a PAPER book with two other wonderful stories in the Year of Weddings series!

Now on to my review…

I am reminded yet again that Rachel Hauck is a GREAT writer! WOW!

You could not have pried the tablet out of my hand! while I was reading A March Bride

Every trial, every misstep, every twist and turn of this amazing story shows you that Rachel Hauck is in tune with precisely how God’s plans work!

We think our own stumbling blocks are just that. And sometimes… maybe… they are – because we have to stumble to look up.

Each trial you have in your own life, whether it is part of God’s plan or not, will help get you on your way to the destination God has in mind for you, and I LOVE that Rachel has that in mind when she’s writing these stories.

In fact, God is central to her novels in a way unlike most others you will read. It’s AMAZING! God has truly gifted Rachel Hauck with such an amazing gift!

The only complaint I have about this book is that there wasn’t more of it!

Whether you enjoyed Once Upon A Prince or not, A March Bride is a MUST READ! – Tweet this!

Now onto the next story in this amazing series!

Here’s a bit more about A March Bride from Zondervan:

Susanna has found her true prince, and their happily ever after is just around the corner. But when Nate asks her to give up something precious to her, Susanna can’t help but wonder if it’s a sign that their love is not meant to be.

Susanna Truitt (Once Upon A Prince) is three weeks from royalty. She’ll soon marry King Nathaniel II of Brighton Kingdom. But when the government insists she renounce her American citizenship before the wedding, coupled with the lack of involvement by family and friends, Susanna’s heart begins to doubt whether this marriage is God’s plan for her.

Nathaniel would do anything for his bride-to-be. But he knows his position requires that she give up a lot to be with him. Her life will never be her own—right down to her very identity.

When she travels home to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, right before the wedding, Nathaniel fears she won’t return. Gathering his courage, he devises a plan to win his bride all over again, and together they seek out a kingdom to treasure above all.

A year’s worth of novellas from twelve inspirational romance authors. Happily ever after guaranteed.

OK… OK… I’m hooked good and proper courtesy of – Tried & True by Mary Connealy

Oh my goodness it’s not fair!

Mary Connealy is a genius!Trie & True

I can not remember when I have ever laughed so hard… Well, yes I can but it had been a while.

This is not a book that you should miss!

Looking for strong female characters – they don’t get any stronger than the Wilde sisters!

Looking for adventure – it’s on the very first page… and then some! The whole book is filled with adventure after adventure, just like the wild west was!

Looking for God – you will find him in this story! He’s there and He’s not just slapped in as an afterthought! Even with such unconventional characters, they live their lives by a very clear Biblical world-view.

Mary Connealy is a masterful writer who had me on the edge of my seat from the first sentence. I was either fearing for someone’s life, cringing at the temper I knew was coming or laughing hysterically.

You won’t be able to put it down. You family will go from being annoyed at you for growling like a grizzly bear fresh out of hibernation to annoyed with your constant outbursts of laughter. Yes, I speak from experience.

Amazing! Absolutely amazing! Historical fiction about the wild west is another genre I never thought I would enjoy but Mary Connealy has made a fan out of me!

Now I just have to find some more of her books! And wait patiently… OK, not so patiently then, for the rest of this series.

WOW!

I know you don’t need anymore convincing but here’s some anyway…

Saddle up for a wildly fun ride with the Wilde sisters!

Kylie Wilde is the youngest sister–and the most civilized. Her older sisters might be happy dressing in trousers and posing as men, but Kylie has grown her hair long and wears skirts every chance she gets. It’s a risk–they are homesteading using the special exemptions they earned serving in the Civil War as “boys”–but Kylie plans to make the most of the years before she can sell her property and return to the luxuries of life back East.

Local land agent Aaron Masterson is fascinated with Kylie from the moment her long hair falls from her cap. But now that he knows her secret, can he in good conscience defraud the U.S. government? And when someone tries to force Kylie off her land, does he have any hope of convincing her that marrying him and settling on the frontier is the better option for her future?

Another great laugh-out-loud historical romance with memorable characters who have charm, style, grace, and a bit of mischief.

Yes, I have been annoyingly silent… But I have a good reason!

I spent my weekend driving… and sitting… and writing furiously, trying to get down every word my brilliant role-model said.

Yes I spent the weekend at a Writer’s conference!

WHOO!

Not only did I get the chance to listen to one of my absolute FAVORITE authors share tips and ideas about writing… I got to talk with her – in person!

And yes… it was almost too much for me. It took all of my composure not to go fan-girl and just squeal with delight.

Melanie Dickerson is the author of my absolute favorite fairy tale series of ALL TIME! And for the record, no matter how great the other 3 are – my current favorite is The Fairest Beauty Of course that may change when I read The Princess Spy in November or “The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest”  in 2015… which is releasing from Thomas Nelson not Zondervan.

And I’m excited to have discovered another exciting new author! I plan to read Jane Nickerson‘s work as soon as I can get my hands on it! They were sold out of her books in the bookstore… sad

I’m not going to say that I learned much from the other 2 speakers but well… I didn’t learn much. They spoke well and the topics were interesting but I have no interest in writing for magazines or newspapers.

For now, I am editing my MS with everything I learned in mind! Exciting!

And I haven’t stopped reviewing… give me a few days to catch up on everything and I’ll have a new review up for you.

Promise!

GOOD MORNING!

I am here this morning to tell you about a unique opportunity!

A balanced bank account, a perfectly furnished luxury apartment, a satisfying career as a scientist and CEO of her own company, and an uncomplicated personal life. Then her well-ordered world is thrown into chaos when she finds a seven-year-old boy and his scruffy dog sitting alone outside her office building.

To celebrate the release of this heart-warming novel, FaithWords and author Lauraine Snelling are pleased to present the GIVE:JOY Sweepstakes.  This sweepstakes features three spectacular prizes, each closely connected to the story, but each prize also comes with a twist: you “Enter to Give”, rather than “Enter to Win”!

Jonah faces a life of struggle, hunger, and poverty, but his courage in these challenges inspires Dinah to step outside her well-ordered world and do something wonderful for him. Through her choice, Dinah discovers joy is found not in getting more for herself, but in giving to make someone else’s life better. • A $250 donation to the faith-based charity, church, or shelter of their choice

Throughout the book, “Dr. G” works tirelessly to save and heal people’s furry friends, including Mutt, and an injured service dog named Valiant.

And Like Dr. G, many real-life veterinarians and animal shelter workers make all the difference in the lives of our animals, often giving services beyond what’s billed. Our Third Prize winner will have a chance to do something extra special for their favorite vet or animal shelter, with:

• A $100 veterinary/shelter donation to be used toward treatment of an animal whose owner cannot afford to pay for veterinary care, or

Heaven Sent Rain by Lauraine Snelling

Book Summary:

Dinah Taylor has an orderly life, and that is just how she likes it. A perfectly furnished luxury apartment, a satisfying career as a scientist and CEO of her own company, and an uncomplicated personal life. But all of that changes when she meets seven-year-old Jonah.

The boy shows up one day, a scruffy dog by his side, in front of her office building. Dinah knows nothing about kids and even less about animals, but after she buys him breakfast, he shows up the next day…and the next. She tries to learn more about him, to help him, but he’s remarkably skilled at evading her questions.

And then, late one night, he calls her in a panic–his dog has been badly injured. Dinah rushes them to a local animal clinic, where she meets Garret, a veterinarian with a thriving practice and a passion for drawing.

Though Jonah takes to Garret right away, for some reason neither understands, Dinah and Garret just don’t mesh. But for Jonah’s sake, their lives continue to collide, and slowly the relationship between these three strangers begins to change.

A MUST READ for every parent – whether you have girls or not | “Raising a Princess” by John Croyle

Raising A Princess by John CroyleFair warning: This book may make those of you with tender hearts – cry… hard.

Not all of us are called to be an advocate for children but all of us who follow Christ should do everything they can to stand up for and help any child who is not being treated the way they should – even if all we can do about that treatment is pray!

No. It’s not enough to just be a good parent to your own children, although that is one good way to show others how children should be treated.

It’s also very important to raise up our children the way we want them to raise up their own.

If more parents were properly informed of how to be the parent that God calls us to be, there would be a lot less children in need of wonderful organizations like the Big Oak Ranch.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to EVERY parent! Having said that, it really doesn’t matter if you have children yet or not and it doesn’t matter if you have children but only boys…

Boys need the principles in this book just as much as girls. They also need to know to look for a young woman with all of these principles to marry one day. And they need to know how to incorporate these principles in their own children one day.

I feel it would be beneficial reading for parents who might not have had the best childhood themselves.

After reading this book with tears running down my cheeks, I realized that I was just as much in need of these principles as my daughter. I have spent so much of my life thinking very little of myself – because I listened, far too much, to the people in the world. Unfortunately the world is, far too often, full of people who do everything they can to drag you down.

And I didn’t have a clue that I needed to be praiseworthy, righteous, stable… I never knew how important it was to have a servant’s heart or Christ-like character. Nobody taught me – and it wasn’t really my mother’s fault either because nobody taught her either. And my dad is another story that I won’t go into here…

But since I became a mother, I have finally begun to follow God’s leading in my heart and in my life and with that has come a greater understanding of what being a mother means according to his word.

And I feel that this book will be a tremendous help in that endeavor. As it would be for any other parent who is trying to raise a Proverbs 31 woman!

5star

What B&H has to say about Raising a Princess:

The Bible’s frequently referenced chapter of Proverbs 31 defines godly womanhood.

In Raising a Princess, greatly respected child advocate John Croyle asks, “How do you equip a daughter to become the kind of woman who is described in Proverbs 31?” After all, a woman like that doesn’t appear out of nowhere. Somebody taught her to rise before dawn to provide for her household. Somebody gave her the moral compass to reach out her hand to the needy. Somebody taught her the business principles that made it possible for her to consider a field and buy it. Perhaps most importantly, somebody gave her a sufficiently strong sense of self that made it possible for her to go out and make a huge impact on the world around her.

Raising a Princess begins with the end in mind. The end is the Proverbs 31 woman; Croyle keeps her squarely in view as he looks at what parenting techniques help the reader to raise a princess who will someday be a queen. Based on Croyle’s life and experience parenting more than 1,800 abused and neglected children at Big Oak Ranch, alongside his two biological children, the book is organized around eight virtues a parent can build in his or her princess:

P: Praiseworthiness
R: Righteousness
I: Initiative
N: Nurturing
C: Character
E: Empowered
S: Servant-Hearted
S: Stability

A SPECIAL Interview with Jennifer Beckstrand!

Who has read Jennifer Beckstrand’s new book Huckleberry Hill yet? What about the second book in the series, which was just released – Huckleberry Summer…?

First I have a special interview to share with you!

Jennifer Beckstrand

A bit about Jennifer Beckstrand

The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series is about an elderly Amish couple who try to find suitable mates for their grandchildren. What could be more fun than throwing two young people together to see if sparks ignite? No one would ever suspect two octogenarian Amish folks of mischief.

Romantic Times gave Huckleberry Hill 4 1/2 stars, calling it “A sweet romance with a lot of heart that offers a new, refreshing take on the…matchmaking trope. The storyline is feasible, the characters are well written, with both their strengths and weaknesses on display. Readers will treasure this series and put the first outing on their keeper shelf.”

I have four daughters, two sons, three sons-in-law, and two adorable grandsons. I live in the foothills of the Wasatch Front with my husband and one son still left at home.

And here is my interview with Jennifer Beckstrand:

1. Is there any particular inspiration behind the Huckleberry Hill series for you?

We all want our children and grandchildren to be happy. I love the idea of two Amish grandparents making matches for their grandchildren and giving them a chance at a happily ever after. Anna Helmuth, the adorable and tenacious grandmother in Huckleberry Hill and Huckleberry Summer, is a little bit like my mother. She’s such a delightful character to write because she’s without guile, and she is always doing something surprising and funny.

2. Are any of the characters modeled after real people you know? Family/ friends?

Besides my mom, there aren’t many characters in the Huckleberry Hill series modeled after people I know. I definitely take personality traits from my friends and family and use them to craft three-dimensional characters. The one character from Huckleberry Summer based off someone in real life is Aden Helmuth’s dog, Pilot. Pilot is based on my neighbor’s dog of the same name. They are both goldendoodles, they both have unruly fur, and they are both puppies at heart. Both Pilots are irresistibly lovable. Lily Eicher doesn’t like dogs, but she can’t help falling in love with Pilot, and his master. 🙂

3. You recently wrote that you were finishing up edits on book 5 in the series. Will that be the last one or are there more planned?

So far there are six books in the works in the Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series. Huckleberry Hill and Huckleberry Summer have been released. Huckleberry Christmas comes out in October. Huckleberry Christmas is about a character in Huckleberry Summer who deserves his own love story. Three more books come out in 2015: Huckleberry Spring, Huckleberry Harvest, and Huckleberry Hearts. I’m so excited for all of them. After that, Anna and Felty Helmuth have a lot of grandchildren. They might just be matchmaking well into their nineties.

4. Do you already have another series planned/ in the works/ pitched? If yes, Would you tell us a little about it?

I have about a dozen ideas for books in my head, including a Western historical series, a cozy mystery, and a romantic fantasy. I’m not sure where my writing will take me next. I’ll keep you posted.

A bit more about Jennifer’s latest book:

Huckleberry Summer by Jennifer Beckstrand

Huckleberry Summer – Book 2 in The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series:

With one of their grandchildren happily married, Anna and Felty Helmuth are ready for their next matchmaking success. Because there’s nothing more rewarding than sparking unexpected love–and putting Huckleberry Hill, Wisconsin, on the map for romance. . .

Cautious to a fault, Lily Eicher strives to live up to her dat’s high standards. She’s certainly not the kind of proper Amish girl who would make time for someone as impetuous as the Helmuths’ grandson, Aden–even if his lively spirit and caring ways are showing her just how wonderful following her heart can be. . .

Recklessly doing the right thing got Aden into big trouble. A fresh start at his grandparents’ is just what he needs. And shy, pretty Lily is turning his world upside down and making him want to prove he can do good within the rules. But now both must find enough faith and understanding to risk pursuing their dreams–together. . .

“Thankful” by Shelley Shepard Gray | Return to Sugarcreek book 2

18505769Funny Story: I started reading this as soon as I received it.

Then we moved and I misplaced it.

Isn’t that just the way these things always happen…

Fortunately Litfuse is an AWESOME company and they understand that their reviewers are only human. So we got it all worked out and I was able to finish the book.

I’m glad of that because I’m not one of those who will pretend to read the books I am entrusted with and ad-lib a review.

I am truly thrilled to see Shelley continuing with the Sugarcreek series! I was a little worried that she was going to leave all of us Amish Fiction fans behind and move on to the world of Historical fiction!

Alas, we have been given another morsel from the incredibly talented Shelley Shepard Gray!

And there is at least one more book from this series to come! So she hasn’t forgotten about her fans! Thank You Shelley!

The premise for “Thankful” is not one I have read in another Amish fiction novel – truly an original idea. And intriguing to boot!

Typically this story line is something you would expect to see in a historical or a secular romance. But Shelley fits everything in so neatly to her wonderful world of Sugarcreek.

BRAVO!

It is such a comfort to see that our friends in Sugarcreek are still there, life goes on and everyone keeps going right along with it. I am thankful that Shelley came back to this series when her fans clamored for more! Otherwise we would have missed out on some wonderful stories!

And there’s at least one to go too!

Here is a bit more about the book from GoodReads:

New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray captures the beauty, devotion, and warmth of Amish life in this engaging tale of family, commitment, trust, and love set in the beloved community of Sugarcreek.

Christina Kempf has always known that God chose Aden Reese to be her husband. As children, he was there to save her when she fell through the ice, and he’s been by her side ever since. After his parents died in a car accident ten years ago, the Kempfs raised Aden as one of their own, and everyone sees Aden and Christina as brother and sister. But Christina has never given up hope that Aden will one day ask her to be his wife.

Aden always planned to court Christina. But losing his mother and father changed everything—except his love for her. Her parents generously welcomed him into their home and treated him like a son. He can’t betray their kindness by admitting his feelings for the girl who is like a sister . . . yet so much more.

Pressured by her parents to court, Christina begins to accept the attentions of Sugarcreek’s young men, and now, Aden must make a choice. Will he stand by and watch the love of his life slip away? Or will he risk losing the love and trust of the family he holds dear to tell Christina how he truly feels?

My Review for “The Last Bride” – Book 5 of the Home to Hickory Hollow series AND a Special Interview with Author: Beverly Lewis

The Last Bride by Beverly Lewis

OK…

I am definitely going to have to go back and finish
“The Bridesmaid” and then read the rest of the series because… WOW!

Just WOW!

“The Last Bride” is amazing!

Beverly Lewis is an exceptionally talented author!

This is not a typical Amish fiction. It’s not even a typical romantic drama.

Beverly Lewis has managed to take several situations you don’t usually find in the Amish world and weave them beautifully into this story of loss and love in a strict old-order Amish community.

The loss… and the love are not what you might be expecting either. There were several things about the book that took me completely by surprise.

Definitely not a predictable story!

It is one I will never forget.

The journey of Tessie and the people around her is crafted into a wonderfully flowing experience – albeit fraught with drama and tragedy. And… it is incredibly easy to find yourself in Tessie’s shoes… however difficult a place that is.

I think this is one of the most endearing and powerful stories about a young Amish girl I’ve ever read. Generally speaking, these types of stories are entertaining and heart-wrenching but rarely does a story about a strict Amish community touch so close to home.

This one does!

And, even though I now feel inexplicably compelled to go back and read the rest of the series, this is not a book that cannot be read out of order. For those of us who have read other books in this series, (or seen the movies made from The Shunning and The Confession – which are not part of the same series but they are written about the same community) it is comforting to “see” old friends from other books by Beverly Lewis. They are woven into the story so well, you don’t feel as if you are out of step because you don’t know their back-story.

It’s just an all-around GREAT story! READ IT!

Disclaimer: I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from the Bethany House reviewer program.

DON’T STOP READING HERE! SCROLL DOWN FOR A SPECIAL INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR: BEVERLY LEWIS!

And don’t forget to stop back by on Monday to find out who has won a copy of this FANTASTIC book!

5star

Fair Warning: If you have not yet read the book, you may find information in the following interview that you consider to be spoilers.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

1- Is there any particular inspiration from your own life for ‘The Last Bride”?

The concept of close inner-marriage among a closed community has captured my interest–and my heart, especially more so lately with many Amish and Mennonited children being born with unique genetic disorders…some fatal.

2- Are you planning more books in the “Home to Hickory Hollow” series or are you moving on to a new series?

The Last Bride if the fifth and final book in this “stand-alone” approach to a beloved and popular series. I just finished the edit for The River, which debuts on September 2, this fall–it is a true stand-alone with no connections to any other character or series. I’m crazy about this story. My readers will love Tilly and Ruth’s story–I promise. 🙂

Also, Child of Mine, a novel I’ve co-written with my husband, David Lewis (best-selling author of Coming Home).releases soon, on June 3rd. If you loved Sanctuary, our first co-written novel, 12 years ago, you will love Child of Mine.

3- Is there anything you can tell us about your next project or is it still hush hush?

The River (my fall ’14 novel) is set in a most heavenly farmland setting in Lancaster County Amish country–“Eden Valley.” I fell in love with this area when I was a young girl growing up nearby…and more recently, while I was visiting there, following the Amish schoolhouse shootings in the fall of ’06. It’s the story of two young Amish women–one courting age, the other married–who left their Plain roots but have returned for their parents’ landmark wedding anniversary celebration. There are serious family secrets to resolve, and several understandings to overcome. And the coming to grips with the younger sister’s first love, who still seems to care for her, even though she has gone “fancy.” I can hardly wait for my readers to take Tilly and Ruth’s story journey with me!

4- Do you still regularly attend conferences? If yes, is it for your own benefit or only to share your advice and experience with others?

I attend as keynote speaker or teacher, yes. Going to writers’ conferences is invaluable and I heartily recommend to anyone wishing to be published traditionally. Or simply to glean and hone their craft of writing.

5- Is there a piece of advice you have for new or aspiring writers?

Read the best literature. Write your heart. Don’t be hesitant to revise, rework, and re-do. Writers are re-writers, if they want to be published. Have a teachable spirit when you do land your contract and start working with editors. Think of yourself as the pencil and the editor as the eraser. Truly. Sometimes what/s on the page just isn’t working. And, oh, did I mention–the best writers are voracious readers?! Also, go to the local bookstore and visualize where your book will land on the shelf, once you’re published.

I hope you have enjoyed my review and Beverly’s interview.

THANK YOU Beverly for taking time out of what I’m certain is a very busy schedule to answer my questions. Your advice is especially inspiring to me and I feel so blessed to have had this opportunity.

I pray God continues to bless your writing and I look forward to many more books in the future!

“The Kissing Bridge” by Tricia Goyer | Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors book 3

The Kissing BridgeIt’s always fun to read a book that is part of a continuing story.

And I really hope we get 7 books out of this series!

Tricia Goyer certainly has a deep well of story lines. Each book of hers that I have read is clearly original. There is no feel of having read the same story in a slightly different form over and over again.

Tricia continues the story that began with The Memory Jar – beautifully in The Kissing Bridge. We see some familiar characters and we meet new ones.

And we get to enjoy the familiar surroundings colored through the views of different people and their experiences.

It’s wonderful!

In fact, I recently read another story that is at least loosely attached to this series and it was equally wonderful.

Tricia Goyer wrote a novella for An Amish Garden called Seeds of Love. It was about the Amish of West Kootenai, Montana as well.

The Kissing Bridge is the third book in this series and it is just as enjoyable a read as the first two.

If you enjoyed The Memory Jar and The Promise Box, you will enjoy The Kissing Bridge!

And I am certain that, if you are a fan of Tricia Goyer’s writing, you will love this book!

4 Stars

A bit more from Zondervan about The Kissing Bridge:

Caught between a stifling Amish community and an unnerving outside world, a devout young woman on the run is about to become the newest arrival to West Kootenai, Montana.

On the day of her sister’s death, Rebecca Troyer took her first step away from the Amish. Rebecca had always strayed a little outside the fold—a job at an Englisch bakery, long weekends with non-Amish friends—but nothing could have prepared her family for what she is about to do: Rebecca is abandoning the community to attend nursing school. She is headed to college, into “the world.” But she has to make it across the country first.

When she stops in West Kootenai, at the home of a lapsed Amish friend from her youth, Rebecca finds a lot more in Montana than she had bargained for—namely a handsome working man named Caleb Hooley. Caleb is at a crossroads of his own. A daredevil bachelor with high standards, he has decided he’ll never find an Amish woman who can quench his thirst for adventure. Needless to say, the pretty Amish girl who has fled her community in secret catches his attention immediately.

As hearts are opened and secrets are revealed, Rebecca and Caleb find they have much more in common than just their Amish background. But can this runaway find love with a risk-taker who has lost his faith in God? All it will take is one week in the wilderness to find out . . .

“Maybelle in Stitches” by Joyce Magnin | Another really good Quilts of Love story!

Another really good Quilts of Love story!

13613160 Funny story: My mother actually reviewed a Christmas novel by Joyce Magnin. She wasn’t even expecting to… It was a complete surprise to her when the box arrived in the mail – 7 books to review and only a few days to do it.

Needless to say, it was a rough couple of weeks.

In a way this has been a similar situation for me. Because this book was not precisely what I was expecting.

With Maybelle in Stitches, I knew I was getting a book about a woman who’s husband is off at war but I didn’t realize which war.

It’s very interesting, how Joyce brings the period to life – writing about the everyday little things you might not ordinarily glean from a history book, or even doing deep research of the period.

The story line of this book is filled with sadness but that’s not really surprising.

What is surprising is that it’s not depressing. It’s sad but it’s interesting and it pulls you in. You find yourself laughing with Maybelle and you find yourself wanting to reach over and give her a big hug.

If you enjoy books about the WWII era, this is definitely a book you would enjoy!

Give it a try.

And, if you enjoy her writing, you may want to check out some of Joyce Magnin’s other books as well.

Here are a few words about Maybelle in Stitches from the Quilts of Love website!

Maybelle Kazinzki can’t sew. She was after all, the only girl in the seventh grade Home Economics class to sew the zipper in the neck hole of the A-Line dress they were supposed to make. But when she finds an unfinished quilt in the attic of her mother’s house she gets the crazy idea to finish it—somehow, come heck or high water. She thinks it will help fill the lonely nights while her husband, Holden, is serving overseas during World War II.

Her recently departed mother’s quilt is made from scraps of material Maybelle traces back to her mother’s childhood, her grandmother’s childhood and her own childhood. She tries to add one of Holden’s stripes to it but the sewing is not going well and neither is her life. After receiving some harsh news, Maybelle’s faith falters and she puts the quilt away and stops trusting God. But God is faithful- no matter what. And it’ll take a group of neighborhood women armed with quilting needles to help Maybelle believe that.

“Gabriel’s Bride” by Amy Lillard | Clover Ridge Book 3

Gabriel's BrideIf you read the intro to Gabriel’s Bride, you’ll see right away that it was written at a particularly difficult time for Amy Lillard.

Instead of letting the events she was dealing with at the time deter her, she made the brave decision to forge ahead and, while she did not allow the sadness to make this book depressing, she did allow her feelings to fuel a deeply emotional story that is the best of this series – at least in my humble opinion.

Amy Lillard is a truly gifted author.

This is a book that everyone should read, whether they enjoy Amish fiction or not.

It is a story of loss, yes – but it is also a story about redemption and the amazing wonder of life and love.

I don’t know what Amy has planned for her next book but I really hope she plans to write more about this series, these people.

And I know her website says this book is the last in the Clover Ridge series but Clover Ridge has become a favorite place of mine and I hope Amy finds a way to share more with us in some way or another about the wonderful community of Clover Ridge.

“Katie’s Choice” by Amy Lillard | Clover Ridge Book 2

Katie's ChoiceAnother masterful telling from Amy Lillard.

WOW!

I’ll say it again. Amy Lillard has such an amazing talent

It is amazing to see so many different perspectives in her work. In the first book of this series: Saving Gideon, we had the perspective of an outsider looking in.

In Katie’s Choice we get the added perspective of a hard-core unbeliever who also happens to be a journalist.

Amy writes with such realism, she puts you in the shoes of each character and the different perspectives are absolutely wonderful.

One of my favorite things about this genre is that the lack of things like intimacy before marriage or bad language force the story to be so much more developed than most mainstream fiction.

Mainstream fiction depends on that “hook” to sell books and Inspirational fiction actually has have a well developed plot and storyline to make it.

Amy Lillard is a prime example of that.

Her plots are well-constructed and they flow well. She doesn’t feel the need to fill the pages with overblown drama or unbelievable events. You follow along the story and it all feels perfectly real while still being highly entertaining.

I feel blessed to have found such a terrific new author and I hope to see many more books of hers in the years to come.

Now onto book 3 of the series…

Click HERE for reviews and extras from B&H Publishing Group. And here is a short blurb about the book from B&H Publishing Group:

Katie Rose Fisher loved Samuel Beachy with an intensity that shook their Amish district. No one doubted they would one day marry, until Samuel turned his back on the church and joined the world of the English. Alone now in Clover Ridge, Katie Rose dedicates her life to God and the school children she teaches each day. Although she secretly longs for more, Katie knows God’s hand is at work, and she is happy. News correspondent Zane Carson never even knew Oklahoma had an Amish community until he got the chance to live among them and learn about their day-to-day activities. Their simple way of life is intriguing, but not half as much as the young teacher. Katie Rose is flattered over the attention she receives from Zane, but she has resolved to never marry. Even if she were to entertain the idea, it surely couldn’t be with an outsider like Zane. Never one prone to the restraints of organized religion, Zane finds a comfort in the rituals and blessings in the day to day righteous living of this small Amish community. He finds himself, God, and love with Katie Rose. But as Zane draws closer to Katie Rose, Samuel comes back to repent his ways and return to his place at her side. Can Zane convince Katie Rose that he is committed to adapting to her way of life, or will Samuel win her affections back for himself once again

Happily Ever After or… Not? “A March Bride” by Rachel Hauck

20140228-153818.jpgOK… truth – my initial review started this way:

“It’s HERE! It’s HERE! It’s HERE!

I’ve only just read “Once Upon A Prince” but it seems I’ve waited forever to read the next chapter in Nathaniel and Susanna’s romance!”

And THEN I read the book.

Yeah… this review is going to be different than my others.

I’m going to spill a bit – can’t help it. Because at some point while you’re reading… anyone who is remotely like me, is going to get mad.

And I mean MAD!

Mad as in – you’re going to be ready to skin Rachel Hauck. That’s pretty serious. And yes, I was there. And I was there hard-core.

At that point, only a mildly morbid curiosity kept me reading.

And then… you realize – WHOO! Rachel Hauck is a GREAT writer! She has me so mad, I’m ready to scream – over… a book. That’s GOOD writing!

And at that point, you couldn’t have pried the tablet out of my hand!

After all that, she did come through. You knew she would. You had to know, all along that she would find some way to make it all come out OK.

And then, just when you think it’s all OK, just when you’re ready to enjoy the rest of the book, she hits you with another whammy and you’re ready to scream again, you’re ready to stomp over to Europe and rip into somebody.

But she’s no dummy, that Rachel Hauck. She does all this on purpose. It’s kind of like God’s plan. Even the missteps and trials help you on your way to the destination God has in mind for you. I LOVE that Rachel has that in mind when she’s writing these stories.

In fact, God is central to her novels in a way unlike most others you will read. It’s AMAZING! God has truly gifted Rachel Hauck with such an amazing gift!

The only complaint I have about this book is that there wasn’t more of it!

Now I just keep hoping to hear a book 3 announced in her Royal Weddings series!

5starCan I give it 10 stars?

Here’s a bit more about the story from Zondervan:

“Balanced” – Finding Center as a Work-at-Home Mom | by Tricia Goyer – an Invaluable resource!

20418526

Working at home while raising kids and juggling a career and family responsibilities is no easy feat. Author and homeschooling mom Tricia Goyer shares her tips for finding balance among all your many hats as a mom.

I follow Tricia Goyer on Facebook and twitter and her blog and I LOVE her books!

And I must admit that I too wonder how she does all that she does – or I did, until I read this book.

“Balanced” is a wonderful way of finding out the answer to all those questions. Tricia shares with other work-at-home moms how she handles all the hats she has to wear.

I’m not going to spoil it for you but I will say this – At one point in the book, Tricia makes a point of saying:

“Disclaimer. This book may not be for you if: You are looking for a simple how-to manual with only schedules, outlines, and agendas. You don’t think your spiritual life impacts your work and home life. You think the whole balance issue depends on you and not on your dependence on God.

In this book, there is as much inner work I’m going to talk about as there are ideas, helps, and tips for balancing. Because as someone who’s been working at home nearly all of my twenty-four years as a parent, I’ve discovered three main things:

  1. What I do isn’t as important as who I am.
  2. What God can do in my life and what He’s capable of doing can be two very different things—I don’t want to limit Him.
  3. My outward goals are only reachable if I submit my inward soul to God.

If this sounds like a book you need, good. If not, I understand! We moms only have so much time. You need to spend your time, energy, and hard-earned money on a book that will meet your expectations.

Know that I’m praying God will speak to your heart through my story. I hope you’ll discover good advice to help you follow the dreams God has placed in your heart and be the wife and mom you’ve always wanted to be.” – Direct quote from Tricia Goyer (Balanced: Finding Center as a Work-at-Home Mom)

I really respect her for that. It takes a lot of courage and faith to present women with a reason they should not buy your book – and then to tell them you’re OK with it. Ironically, that makes me want to buy the book even more!

Tricia and I have a lot of different ideas on how a person should carry out their faith but they stem from the same ideals. And each Christian really does need to understand that they have a very different journey. Your walk with God is a very personal thing and what God calls one to do – he may not call another to. The point is this – I can see Tricia’s faith in every word. She may go about her faith and her witness differently than me but she definitely puts it all out there for the world to see!

As a homeschooling mom, I am encouraged by Tricia’s story and it definitely tells me I am doing something RIGHT! As a single mom, I am excited to see that Tricia gives so much of her time to help out other mothers – single and married alike. As a struggling writer, I am inspired by Tricia’s journey through writing and publishing and there is a lot of information in this book that benefits me greatly. Tricia talks about homeschool, faith, writing, family life and social media – and how to weave each one into your life without de-railing everything else.

And through it all is woven – a tale of faith so heartwarming, it renews my love for God all over again!

I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who is a struggling writer, a work-at-home mom, a home-schooler, new to Christian faith, or someone who is just interested in Tricia Goyer’s life! It’s a great read – no matter your reasoning!
