Book Review | Life is Better at the Beach: Inspirational Rules for Living Each Day Like You’re at the Beach

You can almost believe you’re really there!

Take long walks.

Watch the sunset.

Shoes are optional.

The beautiful four-color book of inspirational photos, Bible verses, quotations, and short writings invites you to escape the buzz of the everyday and into the tranquility that the beach offers. Each section of this book will cover a “beach rule” and encouraging thoughts on how you can incorporate that mind-set or behavior into your daily life.

Much of Jesus’ ministry happened along the seashore, where He told His followers about the peace and rest His Father offered them and modeled the best way to live. In the same way, this book transports you to a favorite beach locale and helps you apply rules for beach living to everyday life—rules to slow down, to notice the beauty in the little things, and to incorporate rest into even the most stressful times.

Full of serene images, inspiring quotations, and restful Bible verses, this book will be a natural addition to your coffee table or desk, as well as a lovely gift for that beach-loving friend.

For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of the Lord. —Habakkuk 2:14 NLT

This is an exceptional book – either to give as a gift or to buy for yourself. It is full of wonderful advice, insightful life tips, and beautiful imagery!

Reading through the book, it’s easy to imagine hearing the waves crashing outside your window… or the call of gulls as they glide over the ocean water.

I have the e-version of this book and while I highly recommend snagging the hardback edition as well, it is exceedingly handy to have a copy on my iPad. I get to take this wonderful volume everywhere with me – and there are unexpected stresses everywhere. It is a delight to have this book with me when I’m on the go!

Book Review | An Unbroken Heart by Kathleen Fuller

“An argument. A crash. In an instant, Joanna’s world is changed forever.”

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover… but can you judge a book by its tagline?

I think so!

Of course, it probably doesn’t hurt that each and every book I have read by Kathleen Fuller is AH-Mazing!

She writes believably about REAL life! She pulls the reader right into her characters’ world… into their story… even into their head.

She writes about tragic events, cautious decision and difficult circumstances – and through it all, she shows that if her characters hold tight to their faith, they can accomplish even the most impossible goals!

Even wrapped in tragedy, the hope and beauty shines through Kathleen’s latest story: An Unbroken Heart – Tweet this!

I hope you’ll give it a chance (of course I always suggest reading a series from the very beginning) – and I really hope you enjoy each story as much as I have!

Happy Reading!

{MORE ABOUT An Unbroken Heart}

An argument. A crash. In an instant, Joanna’s world is changed forever.

One minute, Joanna Schrock was arguing with her parents, and the next, her parents’ lives were claimed in a hit-and-run buggy accident.

Her body is broken, but her heart is in even deeper pain — after all, how do you cope with your parents’ deaths when your last words were spoken in anger?

After an extended stint in a physical rehabilitation center, Joanna re-enters her Amish life. But nothing is the same — not even her feelings for Andrew Beiler.

Joanna has loved Andrew since the age of twelve, and her feelings have not changed throughout the years. She is thrilled when Andrew wants to get married, but she wonders whether it’s love he’s feeling, or pity. As the couple’s wedding date approaches, Joanna isn’t overcome with the deep joy she was hoping to feel; instead, she’s wracked with anxiety and guilt.

Joanna hears God whispering to her, Be strong and courageous, but she’s afraid that courage looks a lot like walking away from her dreams and into the plan of her Heavenly Father. If Joanna takes the first step toward healing, will it cost her everything she’s ever wanted? Or could God be changing the desires of her heart?

Book Review | The Beautiful Pretender by Melanie Dickerson

I have never been much a fan of the Princess and the Pea fairy tale . . . NEVER.

Melanie Dickerson has changed all of that for me!

. . . because I LOVE LOVE LOVE this story!

Of course, if you’ve ever read one of my reviews of Melanie’s books, you’ll know I am flat-out IN LOVE with each and every story she writes!

Aside from her AMAZING writing talent, there is the fact that she writes fairy tale re-tellings! And since I LOVE fairy tales, what more could a girl ask for in a favorite novel!

Also, Melanie writes her books with no magic needed! God has blessed her with such ability that she is able to craft a magnificent story using all of the most important elements of the original story – and yet present the reader with a conclusion that is solved through faith, hard work, skill or pure and simple determination.

No magic required!

Each and every one of these stories is a masterful retelling of our most cherished tales of olde – and in my opinion, these are the books we should introduce to our daughters . . . not some silly tale about a witch of a fairy godmother who gives the hero/heroine whatever their hearts desire without an ounce of reason or work behind it.

But that’s just my opinion. . .

A Beautiful Pretender is all of that and MORE!

Melanie has taken the best elements of the “Princess and the Pea” tale and woven them together with the exceptional characters she introduced in The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest – and taken us on another lively adventure where heroes are just the way you always hoped they would be and there is always more than meets the eye where our lovely heroine is concerned.

Forbidden love . . . Danger . . . Excitement . . . And an ending that no one could ever see coming . . . What more could you ask for in a medieval fairy tale re-telling!

And hey – just look at the BEAUTIFUL cover! Can you think of a more fitting cover for this book? I think not.

LOVE IT!

More about The Beautiful Pretender:

What happens when a margrave realizes he’s fallen in love with a servant?

The Margrave of Thornbeck has to find a bride, fast. He invites ten noble-born ladies from around the country to be his guests at Thornbeck Castle for two weeks, a time to test these ladies and reveal their true character.

Avelina is only responsible for two things: making sure her deception goes undetected and avoiding being selected as the margrave’s bride. Since the latter seems unlikely, she concentrates on not getting caught. No one must know she is merely a maidservant, sent by the Earl of Plimmwald to stand in for his daughter, Dorothea.

Despite Avelina’s best attempts at diverting attention from herself, the margrave has taken notice. And try as she might, she can’t deny her own growing feelings. But something else is afoot in the castle. Something sinister that could have far worse—far deadlier—consequences. Will Avelina be able to stop the evil plot? And at what cost?

Book Review | The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson

OK… I have to do this one differently because it just has to lead with Melanie’s opening line:

The Golden Braid

The one who needs rescuing isn’t always the one in the tower…

Rapunzel can throw a knife better than any man. She paints beautiful flowering vines on the walls of her plaster houses. She sings so sweetly she can coax even a beast to sleep. But there are two things she is afraid her mother might never allow her to do: learn to read and marry.

Fiercely devoted to Rapunzel, her mother is suspicious of every man who so much as looks at her daughter and warns her that no man can be trusted. After a young village farmer asks for Rapunzel’s hand in marriage, Mother decides to move them once again—this time, to the large city of Hagenheim.

The journey proves treacherous, and after being rescued by a knight—Sir Gerek—Rapunzel, in turn, rescues him farther down the road. As a result, Sir Gerek agrees to repay his debt to Rapunzel by teaching her to read. Could there be more to him than his arrogance and desire to marry for riches and position?

As Rapunzel acclimates to life in a new city, she uncovers a mystery that will forever change her life. In this Rapunzel story unlike any other, a world of secrets and treachery are about to be revealed after seventeen years. How will Rapunzel finally take control of her own destiny? And who will prove faithful to a lowly peasant girl with no one to turn to?

OK… now for my thoughts about this fantastic book.

Am I the only one or did anyone else find themself humming the theme from“Tangled” while reading the blurb for this book?

I know the blurb says “like no other” and that is true, but there are definitely bits of it that are reminiscent of Disney’s long-haired heroine. And – for me – those little tidbits just added to an already fantastic story!

Speaking of similarities… I LOVE… LOVE LOVE LOVE that Melanie makes her characters enamored with books and reading. Not only is it a wonderful addition to each story, it’s so very realistic – especially given that it’s usually her female characters who want to learn or have found a way, even though they really shouldn’t…

Now we just have to wait until May for her next awesome fairy tale retelling. And I’ll tell you a little secret. In February, Melanie is releasing a Regency Intrigue Romance! Exciting!

My review of “An Amish Christmas Gift” by Amy Clipston, Ruth Reid, and Kelly Irvin

OK… just look at the cover and tell me you don’t want to read this book!

You can’t… can you?

I knew it!

I have been anxiously awaiting this one! Chomping at the bit actually!

Since you just read my review for Kelly Irvin’s latest in the Amish of Bee County – I’m going to start there!

A Christmas Visitor by Kelly Irvin

And – OH the irony… NEVERMIND! Forget I said that! There’s absolutely nothing ironic about that.

On to the story.

As with the story in The Bishop’s Son, our heroine has some tough decisions ahead of her. And like most Amish stories, her well-meaning family are doing everything they can to be “supportive”.

And by supportive, I mean they want to make sure Frannie understands just how important it is that she make the “right” decision.

Reading about the blazing heat of Texas might not be what you have in mind for a Christmas book but it’s well worth the read! And it just might help warm you up on those crazy cold nights… unless you live in Texas that is.

Naomi’s Gift by Amy Clipston

I can’t help feeling a bit of a kinship with Naomi – unlucky in love… picking the wrong guy… twice… feeling like all hope is lost…

Granted, I’m not 24 anymore and I have two children of my own already, but there are so many little things about Naomi and her lot in life that remind me of myself.

I think a lot of readers will find the same true of themselves. We all have to deal with disappointments and disaster where love is concerned.

And now I have to apologize to Kelly and Any because, once again, Ruth has stolen the show!

An Unexpected Joy by Ruth Reid is THE BEST story in the book (in my humble opinion).

WOW!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

I picked up the story and COULD NOT put it down! Gabby Abby and Micah butt heads and rub each other the wrong way constantly.

Like the other two novellas, Abigail is certain she’s not destined for love or marriage. She has an idea that she can gain some independence at least and make some sort of happiness for herself with her own horse.

Like every other guy in the district, Micah has no patience for Abigail’s “gift of gab” but soon he – NO! I’m not going to tell you. Just trust me. Read it!

You’ll LOVE THEM ALL!

Yes! I whipped out the candy canes already! Can you think of anything else to rate these GREAT stories with…

More from Thomas Nelson about An Amish Christmas Gift:

Naomi’s Gift by Amy Clipston

Naomi has started to think that she isn’t meant to find love, but she might receive more than she ever hoped for this Christmas.

Twenty-four-year-old Naomi King, who has been burned twice by love, has all but given up on marriage and children. As Christmas approaches a time of family, faith, and hope for many others Naomi is more certain than ever her life will be spent as an old maid, helping with the family s quilting business and taking care of her eight siblings. Then she meets Caleb, a young widower with a 7-year-old daughter, and her world is once again turned upside-down.

An Unexpected Joy by Ruth Reid

Abigail has driven other suitors away, but can Micah find a way to show her he cares?

Abigail Kemp has managed to frighten off every bu who’s ever driven her home from a singing. Sure she will live to be an old maid, Abigail starts saving her money to buy a horse so she can at least have some independence.

Micah Zook is looking for a caregiver for his grandmother, and Abigail needs a new job. He never expected that Abigail would talk so much . . . or that his grandmother would keep finding ways to set the two of them up.

Despite Abigail’s constant chatter, she and Micah become friends until Micah makes a decision that leaves Abigail feeling betrayed. With Christmas in their midst, can Micah find a way to reconcile with Abigail and to reveal what’s on his heart?

A Christmas Visitor by Kelly Irvin

Frannie Mast returns to Bee County for Christmas, but her heart stays back in Missouri with an Englisch farm boy.

Frannie knows her parents have the best of intentions when they send her back to Bee County, Texas, to live with her aunt Abigail and her husband Mordecai. After all, she knows nothing can come of a relationship with Rocky, the handsome but Englisch farmer boy back in Missouri. It’s best to put those feelings aside, no matter how hard it is. But all bets are off when Rocky follows Frannie to Texas to plead his case. Could he be the Christmas gift to end all gifts?”

Book Review | A Reluctant Bride by Kathleen Fuller

OK, anyone who follows my own writing knows how ironic this title is for me… and that’s all I’m going to say about it. 😉

This is definitely not the typical Amish romance.

But… WOW!

And I mean WOW!

Not only do we get a romance – granted a bit odd, but still a romance, we get suspense and even a bit of a scandal – and that is out of character for the typical Amish romance.

Bit it’s just too good to miss!

Well, maybe good isn’t quite the word… (tongue in cheek). NO! I’m not telling you what exactly that means! You’ll have to read the book to see!

But trust me when I tell you – it is worth a read!

What a powerful story! What a unique perspective! What an amazing journey!

And it’s the first book in the series so I have hope for MORE!

Amish or not – some families harbor dark secrets. – Tweet this!

Can Sadie and Aden find a way to move past… the past? – Tweet this!

Review © JCMorrows 2015

{MORE ABOUT A Reluctant Bride}

She never wanted to marry. He hopes to make amends for past wrongs. Can love find a way to heal both of their hearts?

Sadie Schrock swore she would never marry. All of her other Amish friends could court and marry—she was content to manage the family business and eventually take it over when her parents are ready to retire. But all of that changes when a reckless driver kills both of her parents and seriously injures her younger sister. With mounting hospital bills adding to the pile of debt her parents left behind, Sadie is left with no choice: she must marry. And not just any man—the man who saw her at her weakest and walked away.

Aden knows what his brother did to Sadie years ago was inexcusable. And every day since that incident, Aden has lived with the guilt for not intervening sooner. When he is faced with the chance to protect Sadie once again, he can’t let her down—even if it means living with the scorn of the woman he loves for the rest of his life.

Working alongside Aden at the store, Sadie realizes he isn’t the same boy who once betrayed her. Just when Sadie starts to let her guard down and perhaps develop feelings for her new husband, dangerous secrets are revealed. Now everything Sadie has worked so hard to protect is threatened, and she must find a way to save her family—and herself.

I’m late! I’m late! Shame on me… and such an AWESOME book to be late on! | wagging finger in my own face…

I can not believe I’m late reviewing THIS book! Jennifer – you should smack me.

But seriously… I thought I had already reviewed it. It was only when I went looking for the review that I realized why it wasn’t there.

OOPS!

I know I literally say this about every book Jennifer puts out but I seriously think this is my favorite so far!

And… Oh my word how do I write this review without giving anything away…

I don’t know how Jennifer does it – I mean she comes up with these wonderful stories that are full of such life and good humor and faith – and there are no two alike!

I especially like the new direction Jennifer took with this one! It’s the first time Felty has gotten into the act (I’m not spoiling anything … it’s in the sneak peek in the back of Huckleberry Spring)

One other thing I LOVE about Jennifer is that she is not shy at all about tackling serious issues! She brings them to light and shows her readers just how dangerous these things can be!

AMAZING!

So… not only will Huckleberry Harvest make you laugh, it will make you think. It will also make you frustrated at how thick-headed some people can be and sigh over how exciting love can be!

In short, it’s great, it’s humorous, it’s exciting, it’s REAL!

I did say it’s the best one yet right… ? Yes, I thought I did! So, what are you waiting for? GO… get your copy! Don’t miss it!!!

And, as usual, I can hardly wait to start the next one! Especially since I read the sneak peek!

More from Kensington about Huckleberry Harvest:

Mandy Helmuth doesn’t like Noah Mischler. Not one little bit. First he breaks her best friend’s heart, and then he has the nerve to chastise her for being a busybody. She feels quite justified in her dislike until Noah does something heroic, like save her life, and she’s forced to bestow her grudging respect even as she determines to keep her distance. But when she unwittingly stumbles into his family troubles, she catches a glimpse of the person Noah so successfully hides from others. Will Mandy be able to look past Noah’s rough and unyielding exterior to see the man she is destined to love?

Much to Noah Mischler’s annoyance, uppity Mandy Helmuth thinks she has the right to tell him how to live his life. If he weren’t helping Mandy’s grandfather install a stove and fix his roof, Noah wouldn’t be within a mile of Huckleberry Hill or that nosy girl who gives him a lecture every time she opens her mouth. But when Mandy discovers the horrible truth about his father, Noah is forced to reveal humiliating secrets that he’s never shared with anyone. He trusts her with his secrets, but can he trust her with his heart?

Book 4 in Amy Clipston’s Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series releases TODAY!

A Simple Prayer is the long awaited 4th novel in Amy Clipston’s “The Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel” series and it releases TODAY! Yes, I got an early look! I LOVE being a book reviewer!

A Simple Prayer by Amy CLipston

This has been one of my absolute favorite series!

In A Hopeful Heart, Hannah met Trey… and had to face a very hard decision.

In A Mother’s Secret, single mother, Carolyn (not something you typically read in an Amish novel by the way) the love of her life… it just takes some time to figure that out.

Their story is continued in “An Amish Cradle” – in Amy’s novella: “A Son for Always” by the way…

In A Dream of Home, we meet our most unlikely couple and we get to watch them go through such an unexpected courtship. It’s so very exciting!

The final book in this series is every bit as wonderful as the other three…

And what a powerful story.

Amy has a particular talent for writing characters who are so beautifully flawed. I’m not just talking about Linda Zook either…

You’re not going to want to put this book down!

Come watch the sparks fly between Linda Zook and Aaron Ebersol. You won’t want to miss a second of the show.

And those aren’t the only sparks in this story – There is quite a bit of friction between Aaron and his brother Solomon as well.

You won’t regret it!

Happy Reading!

Here is what Zondervan has to say about A Simple Prayer:

Life has taken much from Linda Zook. Now she dares to hope for a chance at love and a new beginning.

Linda Zook, 32, works part-time at the Lancaster Grand Hotel. As the sole survivor of a buggy accident that left her orphaned at age four, she was raised by her unwilling Uncle Reuben. Linda longs to be worthy of someone, but the life-long effects of her injuries and her upbringing under the care of her embittered uncle have destroyed her self-worth.

Aaron Ebersol, 32, left the Amish community 17 years ago when he could no longer bear the restrictions or the constant tension with his father. He d written too many unanswered letters to his mother and found himself incapable of putting down any roots in his new home in Missouri. Success in work could not replace the family that denied Aaron, even after all of these years.

Aaron hastily returns to the Amish community of Paradise, PA, after receiving word of his mother’s stroke. Hesitant to get too close to the family he was once a part of, he decides to stay at the Heart of Paradise Bed & Breakfast. He soon encounters Linda, working there part-time, and they begin to develop a friendship.

Aaron’s return allows him to reconnect with his family as he jumps into home improvement projects, hoping to make his parents house more accessible to his handicapped mother. But before long, he is enraged to learn that his brother, Solomon, had hidden all of Aaron’s letters to their mother.

Linda and Aaron must each learn to forgive the family members who have deceived and forsaken them. And Aaron must also show Linda that she is worthy of his love.

“The Love Letters” – A Wonderful NEW Stand alone novel by Beverly Lewis

Has Beverly Lewis ever written a book that wasn’t just AWESOME…

I don’t think so!

Beverly Lewis have written another amazing book – one that I will read and re-read for years to come.

Beverly Lewis has an amazing talent for tackling tough subjects.

She tells us a phenomenal story about something that is very much an every-day type occurrence – but she does it in such a way that takes that ordinary story to the extraordinary.

What begins as a favor to her parents, turns into something else entirely when Marlena must care for her sister’s child while she is in the hospital.

All the little twists and turns and inside-outs you would never expect from what sounds simple at the start, are what make Beverly Lewis such a masterful storyteller!

READ IT! You won’t be sorry!

What Baker Publishing has to say about “Love Letters”

Marlena needed time to let things sink in. It was beyond her how all this could possibly work out–adding the care of an infant to her daily routine. Fortunately, it would just be until Luella returned home from the hospital and was stronger.

No more than a couple weeks, surely…

Marlena Wenger’s life takes an unexpected turn on the day she learns she must care for her estranged sister’s baby. Spending the summer in Brownstown, Pennsylvania, to assist her Mennonite grandmother, and miles from Marlena’s Old Order Amish beau, she feels out of her element in nearly every respect. Yet Marlena determines to do her best and stay focused on her future, even as those hopes become drastically altered.

“A Faith of Her Own” by Kathleen Fuller | The Middlefield Amish

Oh my word… Kathleen Fuller is AMAZING!

Up to now, the only books of hers that I have read and reviewed have been short novellas inside collaborations/ novella collections and they simply did not prepare me for the awesomeness of her writing!

WOW!

And I mean WOW!

I refuse to spoil this book for you but I will tell you that A Faith of Her Own is most unlike any other story of it’s kind that I have read.

Most authors who write about a young person potentially leaving the Amish community write from the perspective that it would simply be the end of the world… or from the perspective that they really have no other options.

Kathleen Fuller doesn’t do that. She comes at the situation from so many angles, it has a ring of truth to it that is almost shocking.

This is a book that ANYONE who enjoys Amish fiction should DEFINITELY read!

And I really really hope the “A Middlefield Amish Novel” means there will be sequels to come! There are SO many characters I am dying to know more about… not just the two main ones – and that may not be different from other books of it’s kind but it is really exciting!

{MORE ABOUT A FAITH OF HER OWN}

Jeremiah thought leaving Middlefield was the hardest thing he’d ever do. That was nothing compared to returning home.

When Jeremiah left his Amish community to pursue his dream of becoming a veterinarian, he left more than just his faith behind—he walked away from his family and his childhood friend, Anna Mae. Now that he’s returned to help out his mentor and work in a Yankee veterinarian practice, Jeremiah must face his past—and the people he betrayed.

Anna Mae had finally put the loss of Jeremiah and the broken vow between them behind her. Even though she supported her best friend’s pursuit of his dream, she never let on how his departure left her questioning her own place in the Amish world. With his return, new questions arise, along with feelings she’d never fully acknowledged before.

As their rekindled friendship begins to turn into something more, Jeremiah and Anna Mae must examine their own faith and their relationship with each other and their families. With both of them torn between loyalty to their loved ones and being pulled in different directions, they must decide whether to heed God’s call, even if it means being apart forever.

“Where Trust Lies” by Janette Oke | Book 2 – Return to The Canadian West

I was THRILLED when I discovered Janette Oke was writing the first book in this series – Where Courage Calls!

      My review is HERE

Anyone who watched the wonderful movie Hallmark put out a few years ago knows that – while it was supposed to be based on her first book in the Canadian West series – it was done a bit differently.

I’ll admit that it’s an intriguing idea – but true fans of Janette Oke’s work were more than a little surprised… or at least I was.

Then Janette and her daughter Laurel decided to write a novel about the adventures of the character from Hallmark’s movie – and IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER!

It bore certain resemblances to the film but, true to Janette’s staggering talent, it was SO MUCH BETTER!

Where Trust Lies is no different in that way!

Janette Oke is a tremendous writer and it’s clear her daughter has inherited that talent as well!

Since I don’t watch the series (we haven’t had cable for several years) I know nothing about whether or not this story lines up with what is going on but Bethany House proclaims it as a companion to the series so there must be some similar events going on there.

I refuse to give anything away but I have to commend Janette on her ability to write such emotional scenes. Who will Beth choose… What will Beth choose? Even in an age where trains cross so much more of the country, there is much that remains untamed and wild.

You will agonize right along with Beth as she tries to decide between her family and her students and friend back West – not to mention a certain Mountie who has stolen her heart…

How would you decide? I’m not sure I could…

Review © JCMorrows 2015

East or West… Love or Family… Obligation or Duty… What will Beth choose?Tweet this!

Will the comfortable & privileged East win out over the wild & wonderful West?Tweet this!

{MORE ABOUT WHERE TRUST LIES}

She loves her friends and students in the West, but family obligations have called her home. Where does she truly belong?

After a year of teaching in the Canadian West, Beth Thatcher returns home to her family. She barely has time to settle in before her mother announces plans for a family holiday–a luxurious steamship tour along the eastern coast of Canada and the United States. Hoping to reconnect with her mother and her sisters, Beth agrees to join them, but she quickly realizes that things have changed since she went away, and renewing their close bond is going to be more challenging than she expected.

There’s one special thing to look forward to–letters and telephone calls from Jarrick, the Mountie who has stolen her heart. The distance between them is almost too much to bear. But can she give her heart to Jarrick when it will mean saying good-bye to her family once again–and possibly forever? And will she still want to live in the western wilds after the steamship tour opens up a world of people and places she never imagined?

Then comes a great test of Beth’s faith. Someone in her family has trusted the wrong person, and suddenly everything Beth knows and loves is toppled. Torn between her family and her dreams, will Beth finally discover where her heart truly belongs?

A companion story to Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart TV series!

A look back | Romance on the River – a FREE prequel in Mary Ellis’ series – “Civil War Heroines!”

Romance on the River

I said it before and I’ll say it again…

Mary Ellis is a genius!

This eBook was JUST enough to get me excited about a book that I had not previously intended to read.

had never been a fan of Civil War era romance, or for anything about the Civil War era, in fact… until I read Mary’s ebook – Romance on the River

After reading this tantalizing tome, I simply had to read the book that followed!

It doesn’t matter how short the story is, it is expertly written! Mary gives you just enough information to make you want to move right on to The Quaker and the Rebel!

I am thrilled that more and more authors realize how much their readers enjoy these extra looks into the story! They can’t possibly put absolutely everything into the main book or each one would be 1,000 pages and readers just don’t have the patience for that.

Which is what makes these extra stories so perfect – it gives us a bonus story that otherwise we would miss.

And it doesn’t hurt that it makes some readers who wouldn’t otherwise consider the book – excited to read it!

So… don’t miss it – especially since it’s FREE!

You can download this short prequel on a number of eBook retailer sites and I have linked as many of them as I could find. Nearly all of them support an app or a reading program that will work on your e-reader, tablet, phone or even your computer.

Happy hunting!

Just when I think Jennifer’s books could not get any better! Oh my word… | “Huckleberry Spring” By Jennifer Beckstrand!

OH MY WORD!

OK… right up front I have to be honest with you. My plans for reading this book were a bit derailed when my devious mother told me someone dies in the book.

She is such a rat! She just loves to needle me when she gets to read a book first and she loves dropping bombshells with absolutely no explanation!

Anyway, coupled with the emotional turmoil that was currently going on among the pages, I thought I might just be better off stopping right where I was.

But boy oh boy… am I glad I didn’t!

DO NOT LET ANYTHING stop you from reading this book!

I always say the current book is the best I’ve read yet and it’s always true! Each one of Jennifer’s books get better and better and better!

This book is by far and away the best I’ve read yet!

And one of the best things about Jennifer’s books is that I always want to go back and read from the beginning so I get to read all my favorite parts and then breeze right into the new story as if there were no agonizing months in between waiting for it to release!

And I don’t mind telling you that I had some reservations about this story when I read the sneak peek.

Surgery… poor Felty. That man really will do anything for his sweet Anna!

Only Jennifer Beckstrand could write such a story and make it so wonderful! Only Jennifer could write such a heart-breaking story and make it so wonderful! Only Jennifer could come up with such a roundabout story of gut-wrenching pain and redemption and weave romance through the entire thing!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

And, as usual, I can hardly wait to start the next one! Especially since I read the sneak peek!

This book needs 10 stars! Can I give it 10 stars…

More from Kensington about Huckleberry Spring:

Nothing gives Anna and Felty Helmuth greater satisfaction than seeing their grandchildren happily married–except for planning their next matchmaking venture. And as springtime comes to Huckleberry Hill, Wisconsin, the air is filled with promise. . .

Ever since the Helmuths’ grandson, Ben, abruptly broke his engagement and moved to Florida, Emma Nelson has kept busy tending her vegetable garden and raising award-winning pumpkins. She can put her heartache aside to help Ben’s Mammi with her own pumpkin patch. At least until Ben shows up to lend support to his ailing Dawdi. . .

Gardening side by side with pretty, nurturing Emma is a sweet kind of torture for Ben. She could have her pick of suitors who can offer what he can’t, and he cares too much to burden her with his secret. Leaving once more is the only option. Yet Emma’s courage is daring him to accept the grace that flourishes here, and the love that has been calling him back to Huckleberry Hill. . .

“An Amish Buggy Ride” by Sarah Price

Well, this is certainly not the typical Amish romance – fraught with tragedy and tension.

I’m not even sure it can be classified as the typical Amish story…

In my own personal experience, the plain folks don’t tend to feel quite so sorry for themselves when confronted by such a difficult situation – but they are people just like us and equally at risk for the anger and emotions that come with this particular hardship.

It makes me wonder though… Sarah Price speaks out quite vocally about staying upbeat and powering through her own struggles with illness.

Is it possible she is drawing from an experience that led to her current attitude or is she simply that fantastic an author that she can fake the depth of bitterness that drives David after his accident?

It’s quite a puzzle – one you will most likely ponder as well, when you read the heart-wrenching scenes that take place before and after one snowy night that leaves mourning and devastation in it’s wake.

4 Stars

And here is what Amazon has to say about An Amish Buggy Ride:

Quiet and soft-spoken, Kate Zook is the responsible eldest daughter in an Amish family and prides herself on fulfilling her role. Then, one fateful snowy night, she uncharacteristically speaks her mind—and unwittingly plays a part in a horrible accident.

Wracked by guilt over her role in the tragedy that left her brother David injured, Kate devotes herself to his care, going so far as to take on his chores in the fields. Even so, her brother’s resentment toward her grows, and David torments Kate, making her increasingly isolated life even more difficult.

Though Kate’s parents have emotionally withdrawn, someone outside the home takes an interest in Kate and notes her clear grief. Samuel, a local boy, has recently returned from a wild rumschpringe—the Amish term for exploring the wider world—and recommitted to his community. Intrigued by Kate’s gentle yet loyal ways, he begins to fall in love with her. But tensions rise as he refuses to put up with David’s rage. As Kate’s heart begins to stir and cry out for happiness, she must rely on faith to find forgiveness or risk losing out on love.

“The Promise” by Beth Wiseman | WOW! Not at all what I expected…

WOW! WOW! WOW!

The Promise is the kind of story that every single young person needs to read!

Parents – BUY this book for your young women! Because I can tell you, FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, that this kind of thing does not ONLY happen when going across oceans to another culture! It can happen right in your own backyard!

One reviewer said “I know things like this happen….sometimes it is just easier to put our heads in the sand.” and that seems to be what far too many of us parents do.

DON’T!

THANK YOU to Beth Wiseman for taking such a courageous step and writing this amazing book! I can not imagine the depths your research took you to – BRAVO!

And THANK YOU Beth, for infusing this story with such a powerful message of God! If ever there was a place for it…

BRAVO!

More from Thomas Nelson about The Promise:

Mallory Hammond is determined not to let her boyfriend, parents, or anyone else get in the way of her #1 goal—to save a life. She had that chance when she was a teenager, and the opportunity slipped away, leaving a void she’s desperate to fill. Then a new friend she met online offers her the chance she’s dreamed of. But she’ll have to leave behind everyone she loves to take it.

In a bold move—and with lots of resistance from Tate and those closest to her—Mallory decides to travel across the world to fulfill her dream. Tate begs her not to go, but Mallory embarks on the dangerous journey to Pakistan anyway, only to discover how swiftly and easily promises can be broken. Her new friend isn’t who he says he is. And Mallory can only pray she’ll make it out alive.

Inspired by actual events, this riveting story will take you on a wild journey and have you asking yourself: How far would I go for love?

“All’s Fair In Love and Cupcakes” by Betsy St. Amant | No it’s not Christmas but still an EXCELLENT read for this time of year!

I really wanted to read and review this book much earlier but it didn’t work out as I had hoped so it was doubly a blessing to be given a second chance to read and review the book!

THANK YOU BookLook Bloggers!

What a great story idea! I LOVE reading about bakeries and there have been so many wonderful books and stories written about the sweet romances that happen in or because of yummy treats lately!

Betsy St. Amant has joined the ranks of these writers… and with a fun twist to boot!

They say there are no new stories but this one is definitely not one that sounds like a lot of others I’ve read.

What a great idea! What a great concept! What a great story!

And what better way for a man to see how much his best friend means to him – than to realize he is about to lose her…

More from Zondervan about All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes:

Kat inspected rows of the same old cupcakes. They seemed to blink back at her, as if they knew she was capable of so much more.

Kat Varland has had enough of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

At twenty-six years old, Kat is still living in the shadows of her family in Bayou Bend, Louisiana. Still working shifts at her Aunt Maggie’s bakery. Still wondering what to do with her passion for baking and her business degree. And still single.

But when Lucas Brannen, Kat’s best friend, signs her up for a reality TV bake-off on Cupcake Combat, everything Kat ever wanted is suddenly dangled in front of her: creative license as a baker, recognition as a visionary . . . and a job at a famous bakery in New York.

As the competition heats up, Lucas realizes he might have made a huge mistake. As much as he wants the best for Kat, the only thing he wants for himself—her—is suddenly in danger of slipping away.

The bright lights of reality cooking wars and the chance at a successful career dazzle Kat’s senses and Lucas is faced with a difficult choice: help his friend achieve her dreams . . . or sabotage her chances to keep her in Louisiana.

My review of “The Wishing Season” by Denise Hunter | Stop #13 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

BONUS! Thanks to BookLook Bloggers, you get ONE MORE DAY of Christmas reviews! A Baker’s dozen…

ENJOY!

The first book I read and reviewed in the Chapel Springs series was a complete and total surprise!

Then, of course, I was hooked and had to read the next book and now I’m so excited to read this one!

The Wishing Season was another complete surprise for me!

WHAT A GREAT READ!

I love the story! I love the characters! I love the crazy roller coaster ride of an adventure that you get when you add in one contest, one determined chef and one hard-nosed contractor.

It’s not precisely what I would consider a Christmas story but it is a wonderful winter romance!

Do not miss this story!

More from Thomas Nelson about The Wishing Season:

Living side-by-side, a fledgling chef and a big-hearted contractor find a delicious attraction.

Trouble is, their chemistry could spoil their dreams.

Spirited PJ McKinley has the touch when it comes to food. Her dream of opening her own restaurant is just one building short of reality. So when a Chapel Springs resident offers her beloved ancestral home to the applicant with the best plan for the house, PJ believes it’s a contest she was meant to win.

Contractor Cole Evans is confident, professional, and swoon-worthy—but this former foster kid knows his life could have turned out very differently. When Cole discovers the contest, he believes his home for foster kids in transition has found its saving grace. All he has to do is convince the owner that an out-of-towner with a not-for-profit enterprise is good for the community.

But when the eccentric philanthropist sees PJ and Cole’s proposals, she makes an unexpected decision: the pair will share the house for a year to show what their ideas are made of. Now, with Cole and the foster kids upstairs and PJ and the restaurant below, day-to-day life has turned into out-and-out competition—with some seriously flirtatious hallway encounters on the side. Turns out in this competition, it’s not just the house on the line, it’s their hearts.

My review of “Clara’s Wish” by Beth Shriver | Stop #12 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

There seems to be quite a bit of disagreement about this book… most people love it but at least two reviews I’ve read were clearly not impressed.

I think a good part of the problem with some judgments might be similar to what we see from fans of historical fiction – readers who are familiar with one specific community expect every book to be the same and that’s just not how it works.

Personally, I think the book is written as well as the last book of Beth Shriver’s I read.

No, every Amish fiction story is not the same. Life would be awfully boring if that were the case – but Beth Shriver writes an interesting story about Clara and the community she is a part of.

Clara’s Wish is a heartwarming Christmas read and a sweet story about friends coming together to give a wonderful gift to a dear friend.

More from Zondervan about Love at Mistletoe Inn:

In this Amish Christmas romance, Lizzy Ryder discovers that this holiday season could be her best friend’s last. Will she find the comfort and love she desperately needs?

Lizzy Ryder is looking for an upstanding, hard-working, God-fearing gentleman—everything that Zachariah Schrock is not!

But when Zach’s sister and Lizzy’s best friend, Clara, takes ill, they come together to give her a Christmas she’ll never forget. As Clara’s condition worsens, will they learn to lean on God and each other?

My review of “Love at Mistletoe Inn” by Cindy Kirk | Stop #11 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

Another Exciting Year of Weddings has begun with Love at Mistletoe Inn!

What a fun read!

My own personal experiences and beliefs aside… the plot of this story makes for a fun adventure, but it is not exactly a good model for romance.

Think about it…

Couple rushes into a marriage…

Someone freaks out, changes their mind and tries to back out…

Annulment/divorce/loss of paperwork is supposed to happen but doesn’t quite work out…

Said couple is still married… OH NO!

While it is always entertaining, it presents the same sort of outlook that causes so many problems in marriage (in my own personal opinion) – no one feels the need to take marriage as seriously as they should.

Having said that…

I’m so glad to see more than one author capitalizing on the quirky relative angle. I am finding stories much more enjoyable now where we have matchmaking grandparents or a scheming Aunt who dip their fingers into the heart of things!

The remainder of the characters are fun and interesting. Even the idea behind how Hope and John got together and then split up before the “I do”s were even done… is well developed and intriguing.

And I am glad to see that a writer who does not typically write Christian fiction can do it so well. It gives me hope for the entire romance novel industry.

More from Zondervan about Love at Mistletoe Inn:

They’ve helped orchestrate the perfect day for countless couples. Now twelve new couples will find themselves in the wedding spotlight in the second Year of Weddings novella collection.

Sometimes the road to happiness is paved with youthful mistakes.

Hope Prentiss didn’t go to the Harmony High School senior prom. Instead, she and John Burke drove to Boise and got married. At eighteen. But when Hope panicked after saying “I do,” the mail-order preacher assured her he just wouldn’t send in the paperwork. No forms, no marriage, no problem. Right?

Well . . .

Now, ten years later, Hope discovers that her prom-night wedding counted—and, as fate would have it, the jilted John Burke has just ridden back into town. And he’s staying with her Aunt Verna at the inn where she and Hope host weddings. Though Hope thinks she wants an annulment, a little time with John makes her think twice . . . and emotions between the more-or-less Mr. and Mrs. Burke reach a boiling point a soon as they get a moment alone.

With annulment out the window, Hope finds herself staring in the face of a divorce. But after spending some time with John and helping plan a Christmas wedding for a mystery couple, Hope begins to wonder if she really wants a divorce … or a real wedding of her own.

“Surprised By Love” by Julie Lessman

Oddly enough, the synopsis for this book brings one of my absolute favorite movies to mind. Young girl, shy and introverted – goes to Paris and returns all grown up.

Of course my favorite version is the 1995 remake with Julia Ormond, Greg Kinnear and Harrison Ford… not the original with Audrey Hepburn, William Holden and Humphrey Bogart – which is ultimately sadder and holds a much darker theme.

Surprised by Love is a wonderful Historical adventure – full of forgiveness, romance and of course.. surprise.

I was thoroughly intrigued by the wonderful story – and was surprised to discover that this is the third book in a series. It does not read that way. You should have no trouble at all with feeling lost in the midst of a series.

Megan is not at all what I pictured from reading the back cover copy. She is a bit of a spitfire – which makes perfect sense when you consider that she has taken an internship in the District Attorney’s office.

I am not about to spoil the outcome for you – you will HAVE to read it for yourself but I will tell you that it surprised me!

This is not a book to miss!

And of course now… I have to go hunt down more books. LOL!

5star

More from Revell/Baker Publishing about Surprised By Love:

She can turn the head of the man who spurned her–but can she turn his heart?

When Megan McClare left San Francisco to study in Paris, no one would accuse her of being poised and pretty. But on the other side of the Atlantic, this wallflower blossomed into a beauty with big dreams. When she returns to California and accepts an internship at the district attorney’s office, she’s thrilled that her life is taking shape. But the exciting opportunity quickly loses its glow when she discovers she’ll be working alongside Devin Caldwell, who mercilessly mocked her at school–and with whom she was hopelessly enamored.

Bram Hughes is the best friend to whom Megan has always turned for support and advice. But when she seeks his counsel about working with Devin Caldwell, Bram’s vision is clouded by his sudden unwelcome attraction to a girl he had always thought of as a little sister. He advises forgiveness, but can he forgive himself for pushing the woman he loves into the arms of another man?

Author Julie Lessman draws a romantic triangle that will touch your heart in this glittering Gilded Age tale of transforming love.

“Trading Secrets” by Melody Carlson

We need more books like this!

Teens today need better role models – role models like the ones in Melody Carlson’s books!

No, they’re not perfect… but who is! At least there is a strong moral to Melody’s story.

One of which is that it’s never a good idea to tell a lie.

Having an Amish pen pal has really gained  popularity in recent years  and it’s really exciting to read about such a unique experience.

Ironically, I recently had a similar experience myself – several people made the comment that they thought “JC” was a man… which is why I’ve now posted my picture – to be certain everyone knows I am not, in fact, a man.

And don’t you want to know what happens with Micah and her pen pal when he finds out she is also not a boy…?

It’s great fun!

Not a story to be missed! And so exciting that I have a wonderful book that I can pass on to my daughter in a few years – I say a few years because she’s only 8 at the moment – although now that I think about it, she could probably handle it now because she’s incredibly mature for her age. And she LOVES to read!

Just as I know you will LOVE to read this book!

And now I am going to go in search of more books by Melody Carlson!

More from Revell/Baker Publishing about Trading Secrets:

The truth may set you free–but it might also land you in some uncomfortably hot water.

Over the years, Micah Knight has exchanged many letters–and many secrets–with her longtime Amish pen pal, Zach. But Micah’s kept quiet on the biggest secret of all–the fact that despite her name, she’s a girl.

Now Micah finally has the chance to meet her pen pal face-to-face. She wants nothing more than to experience life on Zach’s Amish farm, but she’s more than a little anxious. Will he be angry at her for deceiving him all these years? And will she risk losing his friendship to find something more?

My review of “The Christmas Cat” by Melody Carlson | Stop #10 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

Well this book was NOTHING like I expected.

I did not expect to fall madly in love with a quick, cute, little Christmas story but fall madly in love with The Christmas Cat – I did!

WOW!

Melody Carlson has a talent! No wonder she has so many successful books on the market today!

When you start reading this story, visions of Brewster’s Millions or The Bachelor (the movie from a few years ago… NOT the crazy TV show) immediately fill your mind – but this heartwarming and heart-healing story bears absolutely no resemblance to those wild and crazy adventures…

Though that’s not to say the book holds no adventure.

Who could possibly place a horde of cats with happy homes before Christmas – without a little adventure.

But there is no race other than the one our main character builds up for himself.

Garrison has felt lost for so long and just when he thinks he has finally begun to find a place to fit, doubt sets in and he flees faster that a turkey at Thanksgiving.

If you’re asking yourself how a man who is allergic to cats can find peace, home and eventually his way in life – because of cats, then you better just read the book because I’m NOT going to spoil it for you!

And thankfully, Melody has quite a few of these charming stories, so when you’re done with this one, you can go track down her others too!

More from Revell/Baker Publishing about The Christmas Cat:

He felt his face flushing as Cara opened the door. Wearing a garnet-colored knit dress and with her dark hair pinned up, she looked even prettier than he remembered. Suddenly he wished he’d thought to bring a hostess gift. Like a cat.

After years abroad, Garrison Brown finds himself at the home of his beloved grandmother who has just passed away. He must sort out her belongings, including six cats who need new homes. While he hopes to dispense with the task quickly–especially since he is severely allergic to cats–his grandmother’s instructions don’t allow for speed. She has left some challenging requirements for the future homes of her furry friends.

Can he match the cats with the perfect new owners? And is it possible that he might meet his own match along the way?

My review of “Snow Angel Cove” by RaeAnne Thayne | Stop #9 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

Oh my word. Who could ever expect a Christmas book to start with a woman and her young daughter watching as a fire destroys all of their hopes and dreams!

And then, when it really looks as if all hope is lost, the mother is hit by a car!

I’m NOT giving anything away! It’s all in the excerpt! And I’ll prove it to you.

More from Harlequin about Snow Angel Cove:

New York Times bestselling author RaeAnne Thayne welcomes you to a small town full of big surprises that are both merry and bright…

Nothing short of a miracle can restore Eliza Hayward’s Christmas cheer. The job she pinned her dreams on has gone up in smoke—literally—and now she’s stuck in an unfamiliar, if breathtaking, small town. Precariously close to being destitute, Eliza needs a helping hand…for her sick young daughter’s sake as well as her own. But she’s not expecting her holiday hero to almost run her down with his car!

Rescuing Eliza is pure instinct for tech genius Aidan Caine. At first, putting the renovation of his lakeside guest lodge in Eliza’s hands assuages his guilt—until he sees how quickly he could fall for her. Having focused solely on his business for years, he never knew that what his life was missing was Eliza and her little girl. But is he willing to risk hoping for a yuletide romance that could lead to forever?

Yeah… I admit I was more than a little intrigued at how such disastrous events could actually lead to a HAPPY Christmas – so, of course, I had to read it!

And boy am I glad I did!

Now, before I go any further, I have to tell you this is NOT my normal CHRISTIAN read. But then you probably guessed that from the publisher. However, I will say – to be completely fair – Harlequin has published much more adult books.

But you should be warned – this is certainly not in the Inspirational or Christian fiction category and there is quite a bit of content that might shock a reader who is expecting the typical Christian read.

I was interested in the book because of the cover mostly… but the story itself sounded very heart-warming and sweet so that was the deciding factor.

Kensington (another notorious publisher of very adult books) puts out some of my absolute FAVORITE Amish novels so I figured it was worth taking a chance! Especially when you consider just how risqué some other Christian fiction is these days…

FAIR WARNING! THE FOLLOWING MAY BE CONSIDERED A SPOILER!!!

For the record, there is no inappropriate physical behavior. There are some seriously sizzling kisses and a very well-described desire of thoughts for more but it does not go beyond that – Thankfully.

There is also a bit of adult language but again… thankfully… no one misuses God’s name so I’m a happy camper because this is one book I will not be letting go of ANYTIME SOON! WOW!

OK… SPOILER OVER!

In my personal opinion, this is one of the BEST stories I’ve read this year!

The characters are terrific. The plot is believable and I am desperate for more stories to come! It is a wonderful story and an excellent beginning! Great job RaeAnne!

My review of “Forever Christmas” by Robert Tate Miller | Stop #8 of my Salute to Christmas Reads!

Funny story: When I read the synopsis for this book, it immediately made me think of a movie I saw years ago.

In fact… from the synopsis, the book sounds exactly like the movie – so of course, I was intrigued. I just had to read it!

As far as I can tell, Robert Tate Miller is the man who actually wrote the movie script, so I’m guessing he decided he wanted to offer this wonderful story to the reading world as well.

It’s more than a little odd… reading a book that came from a movie – very different from reading a book that later becomes a movie.

The expectations are very different because you already have a picture in your head of what is happening.

So… for anyone who saw the movie who reads the book, they’ll be able to visualize very well while reading.

Two somewhat unique observations…

1) From all of the other reviews I read through, it appears that I am the only reviewer who has actually seen the movie.

2) I have to wonder if Robert Tate Miller is no longer interested in writing for Hollywood since his stories are full of miracles and heartwarming Christmas and that seems to be the last thing Hollywood is interested in at the moment… even on his website, it sounds as if Robert is doing everything he can to forget he ever wrote for Hollywood – which seems like a fine idea to me.

More from Thomas Nelson about Forever Christmas:

One snowy Christmas Eve, Andrew’s life is tragically turned upside down. Then a heavenly gift provides him the opportunity to make things right.

Andrew Farmer is on the fast-track in the literary world. As an up-and-coming agent, he is constantly on the road, wooing prospective clients and making a name for himself. But all of his travels leave his wife and childhood sweetheart, Beth, home alone, wondering what has happened to their marriage.

Andrew returns from yet another last-minute trip, knowing he needs to make amends to Beth for his departure just days before Christmas, but he doesn’t expect her frosty greeting and the argument that ensues. Would they have spent their last moments together arguing had they known that just before midnight on Christmas Eve, Beth would be hit by an out-of-control taxi that would ultimately take her life? Andrew would like to believe not, but it isn’t until he meets a humble, straight-talking angel in disguise named Lionel that Andrew receives the opportunity to try again.

Lionel grants Andrew the gift of the last three days of Beth’s life to relive, but there’s a hitch: her fate cannot be changed. Only one gift will save her life, and Andrew has a mere seventy-two hours to figure out what that gift is or he’ll lose Beth forever.
