BOOK REVIEW | A Sweet Misfortune – Book 2 of Maggie Brendan’s Virtues and Vices of the Old West series

If you loved The Trouble With Patience by Maggie Brendan do not miss A Sweet Misfortune – book 2 in this exceptional series.

Yes, the cover is another winner! The wistfulness on the heroine’s face will draw you in and have you picking up the book.

From there, you’ll read the back cover copy – and you won’t want to put it down.

Of course, you’ll want to buy the book first… and then start reading, because once you open the book, you won’t want to close it!

I know I didn’t!

And I can hardly wait for the next installment!

I LOVE reading about these spunky women who don’t take any guff from the men around them who think so much of themselves.

Maggie Brendan is an exceptionally talented author who weaves an intriguing story around vibrant characters smack dab in the middle of an intricate setting! And don’t forget about that irresistible friction between our hero and heroine! What romance would be complete without it…

BRAVO Maggie! Another winner!

And here’s a bit more about this wonderful book from Revell:

Rachel Matthews isn’t one to rely on others to take care of her.

Destitute and alone, she still wants to make her own way and her own money–even if she’s forced into the life of a dance hall girl. Horrified by her circumstances, Rachel’s brother sends a friend–the widely admired cattle baron John McIntyre–to rescue her, then sets off to earn enough money to buy back the family ranch. But when months pass without her brother’s return, Rachel isn’t sure she can take one more day in John McIntyre’s home–especially once she discovers that he’s the one who holds the deed to her family’s ranch.

Sparks fly between this spunky, independent heroine and the ruggedly handsome hero as they navigate the snarled terrain of pride, greed, faith, and love in Maggie Brendan’s delightful series set in the Old West.Maggie Award of Excellence and the 2013 Heart of Excellence Readers’ Choice Award.

It’s RELEASE DAY! | The Trouble With Patience – Book 1 of Maggie Brendan’s NEW series – Virtues and Vices of the Old West

I reviewed this book almost two weeks ago now and I am still amazed at just how great a read it was!

Be sure to check out Maggie’s other books too! I know I will be!

Patience Cavanaugh is precisely how I picture a Texas woman from the novel’s era. Maybe even from any era…

The Trouble With Patience by Maggie Brendan is a MUST READ!

From the amazingly eye-catching cover to the absolutely unforgettable characters – this novel is one you’ll be thrilled to add to your library.

This is my first book by Maggie Brendan and it has most definitely sparked my interest. I can hardly wait to go and find more fantastic books by this talented author!

Maggie Brendan weaves an intriguing story around realistic characters while still filling the pages with intricate details and story tidbits that make this a very real story!

There is hardship… yes – No Wild West story would be complete without it. There is also quite a bit of friction between our hero and heroine – again, what romance would be complete without it…

Virtues and Vices of the Old West – a PERFECT name for this series in my opinion.

BRAVO Maggie!

A Texas women, a dilapidated boardinghouse, a small-town Sheriff – a recipe for romance…?Tweet this!

Patience Cavanaugh has lost faith in love – can Jedediah Jones change her mind?Tweet this!

As I said with the last historical fiction novel I reviewed – If only we’d had these kind of books in high school… I would certainly remember more about that time in history. Thank goodness we have such amazing writers who research so very thoroughly and then sprinkle in those facts among their fictional story!

BRAVO Maggie!

And here’s a bit more about this wonderful book from Revell:

“Maggie Brendan deftly captures the flavor of the Old West in a sweet love story filled with suspense and well-developed, interesting characters that will surely capture the hearts of readers.”–Kathleen Morgan, author of the Brides of Culdee Creek series

Patience Cavanaugh has lost hope in romance. The man she yearned to marry is dead and her dreams are gone with him. Now she is consumed with restoring a dilapidated boardinghouse in order to support herself.

Despite Patience’s desire for solitude, Jedediah Jones, the local marshal with a reputation for hanging criminals, becomes an ever-looming part of her life. It seems like such a simple arrangement: She needs someone with a strong back to help her fix up the boardinghouse. He needs a dependable source of food for himself and his prisoners. But as she gets to know this “hanging lawman,” Patience finds there is far more to him than meets the eye–and it could destroy their tenuous relationship forever.

With a keen eye for historical detail and a deft hand at romantic tension, Maggie Brendan invites you to a Montana gold rush boomtown, where vices and virtues are on full display and love is lying in wait.

“Maggie Brendan has created a wealth of memorable characters in this heartwarming story. Romance, mystery, and an intriguing plot all add up to a winning combination that’s sure to delight readers.”–Margaret Brownley, bestselling author of Gunpowder Tea and Petticoat Detective

“Brendan is a master at tender love stories that tug at your heart while touching the soul, providing rich historical detail and tension that races the pulse.”–Julie Lessman, award-winning author of The Daughters of Boston series

Maggie Brendan is the bestselling author of the Heart of the West and The Blue Willow Brides series. Winner of the 2014 Book Buyers Best Award (OCC/RWA) for inspirational fiction and the 2013 Laurel Wreath Award, she was a finalist for the 2013 Published Maggie Award of Excellence and the 2013 Heart of Excellence Readers’ Choice Award.

Sad… the Lone Star Brides series is coming to an end with “A Matter of Heart” by Tracie Peterson

A Matter of HeartThis is the third book in Tracie Peterson‘s Lone Star Brides series.

I have now read all three of them now and let me just say…

WOW!

Each story is better than the last – not always how it works.

A Matter of Heart is another great read!

Such powerful emotions, such great stories, such strong characters – and how she comes up with so many different ones who are similar in some ways but still so very different… well, it’s only one of the things that makes her such an amazing author!

Unlike my experience with the first book in this series; I didn’t even bother to read any of the other silly reviews for this book.

And I do believe that Tracie’s sales speak for themselves!

I have a whole new outlook on Texas and I have to say that…even though I absolutely detest heat, I just have to see it someday soon!

Of course it won’t be the same… but worth it all the same, I’m sure!

Once again I am thrilled to say that God is interwoven into the story in a perfect way! So many Christian fiction books are either too preachy or there’s not nearly enough of God in the story for it to truly work as a Christian fiction novel.

And I know I’ve said it before but it has to be said again. It’s so much more believable for me as far as history goes because… Historically speaking… people were more religious. So it’s more believable, more accurate and it’s more interesting!

The book is a new favorite of mine and I’m sad to see that it’s the last one. Although I’m hopeful she has more series in the works already!

“A Sensible Arrangement” by Tracie Peterson

A Sensible Arrangement by Tracie PetersonThis is the first book I have ever read by Tracie Peterson and now I’m going to have to go track down as many as I can get my hands on because it’s SO GOOD!

WOW!

An amazing story! Such inspiring characters!
A great, great read!

From page one I was hooked. (And I’m not much for historical fiction – I enjoy a few select authors but mostly I’m more fond of modern stories.)

I found myself attached to the characters immediately and I laugh at the few other silly reviews I’ve read that say the characters were very flat and unlovable.

Marty is precisely the kind of woman I would expect to read about who hails from Texas. She knows how to take care of herself and she is not afraid of a challenge.

I love how well God is interwoven into the story – even though Marty is not very fond of Him through most of the book. And it’s very refreshing to see everyone around her trying to win her back to Him. Most of the books I’ve read about people who have lost their faith in God, show the journey back but not always by way of others trying to win them back to the Kingdom.

Tracie Peterson does this well and she does it without sounding preachy.

The book is definitely a new favorite of mine and I can’t wait to read some of her other novels!

Here is a bit more about A Sensible Arrangement from Bethany House:

Marty Dandridge Olson is ready to leave behind the pain of the past.
Answering an advertisement for a “Lone Star bride,” she leaves her Texas ranch and heads to Denver to marry a man she doesn’t know.

Jake Wythe is the man waiting for her.
Burned by love, he marries now simply to satisfy the board of Morgan Bank, which believes a man of his standing in society should be wed. Together Jake and Marty agree they are done with romance and love and will make this nothing more than a marriage of convenience.

When missing money and a collapsing economy threaten his job, Jake’s yearning to return to ranching grows ever stronger, much to Marty’s dismay. But a fondness has grown between them, as well, further complicating matters.

What will happen when their relationship shifts in unexpected ways…
and dreams and secrets collide?
