Both books are a MUST-READ!

Marissa Shrock is an amazingly talented author!

Her words grab hold of you and absolutely will not let go until you reach the very end of the story! She illustrates the journey of her characters with such skill, you feel as if you ARE Vivica! (or rather… Fredrica)

I am so very excited to see this long-awaited sequel release. I devoured the first book of the series and have been patiently (not so much) waiting for the journey to continue!

The author provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but I will be purchasing it anyway! Yes, It’s that good!

Book Review | Blue Ribbon Trail Ride by Miralee Ferrell

I did not acquire this book for myself. I have a nine (almost ten) year-old daughter who is positively enamored with horses.

My only experience with horses was more than a little negative and I was never one of those girls who just loved horses.

. . . unicorns . . . dragons . . . griffins . . .

But not horses.

However, my daughter loves them, so I snagged this series for her. And I can only hope she will enjoy reading them as much as I have.

This is so much more than just a book for girls who love horses. There’s mystery. There’s intrigue. There’s a group of young teens who are determined to help out their friends (and younger brother).

I never knew that Miralee Ferrell wrote young adult books – much less such entertaining ones. It is so very refreshing to find such wonderful family-friendly stories that are not only suitable for all ages, but appealing as well.

I also believe these stories will be a tremendous help to those young adults who don’t really understand things like autism. We could all use some positive reinforcement that shows us that just because someone is a little different . . . doesn’t mean there is something wrong with them.

I highly suggest you start with book 1: A Horse For Kate, but I am someone who enjoys reading a series from the very beginning so that’s just my personal suggestion.

Happy Reading!

Soulmate (Teen Paranormal Romance Series) (The Soulmate Series: Paranormal Teen Romance Book 1) by Kellie McAllen

An intriguing supernatural story of life and love.

The premise for this story is one I’ve not seen before. Kudos Kellie for such an original idea! And it’s a series so the story doesn’t stop with book 1 – which is always great. I typically read Christian fiction, and while this is not, it is a clean read and even has the bonus of great moral lessons.

I love that Kellie isn’t afraid to tackle some serious issues and in a way that will not be too harsh for most readers – well done, Kellie! She brings to light the harsh realities of abortion, the ideas of what is “normal” in society, and the dangers of dating with no rules.

All in all, an entertaining and difficult to put down read! Excited for the next installment!

More about the book from Goodreads:

Most people search for decades to find their soulmate; Rachel Masterson was born with hers. Sharing her body with another soul has had its ups and downs for 15 year old Rachel, but there’s no one she’d rather share her life with than her soulmate, Rider. Fiercely devoted to him, Rachel has ostracized herself from most of her peers and gained a reputation as someone just a little too far gone on the wrong side of crazy.

Her family’s sudden move, however, gives her a chance at a fresh new life, without the stigma of her “imaginary friend.” Hit with the triple-whammy stress of trying to make new friends (and her first boyfriend) in a new school, in a new town, far away from the only other person who has ever understood her, Rachel’s relationship with Rider is strained by the choices that she makes, choices that ultimately lead to their separation.

When a tragic accident tears them apart, can Rachel learn to live and love again?

The Gifting Series by K. E. Ganshert | Looking back…

OK… yes, I did. I read through books 1, 2 and 3 AGAIN!

I can’t help myself. They’re SOOOO fantastic!

And now I have to figure out how to come back down to earth.

It is the worst sort of book hangover possible – being forced to deal with reality, when you’ve been enveloped in a world all its’ own… a world that is decidedly not your own.

Speculative and Supernatural story-lines are the most difficult because the writer truly does create a different world for you to visit when you pick up the book.

Coming back to reality is difficult – or at least, it is when the author is as amazingly talented as K.E. Ganshert!

As an author myself, I worry that my own worlds are nowhere near as fantastic as hers.

As a reader, I hope and pray to have many more amazing stories like this from K.E. Ganshert because…

While I enjoy being in my own imaginary worlds – it is a very different experience to be able to immerse yourself in someone else’s world.

It’s freeing because you don’t know the plot going in. It’s exciting because you don’t know what’s going to happen next.

It’s terrifying because you get attached to these people you did not make up – you have no control over what happens to them or where the story takes them… but YOU HAVE TO KNOW!

And like so many other series that I have fallen absolutely in love with… I bugged my mum until she read them. She was happy to have all three so she could read them sequentially.

And… after reading them, she is just as hooked as I am but for different reasons. The things about this series that appeal to me, that drew me in, that hooked me from the second chapter of book 1 – do not have the same effects on her… not in the same ways and not for the same reasons.

GOODREADSAMAZONITUNESK.E. GANSHERT’S WEBSITE

My mother and I do agree on one thing where these books are concerned though, but for totally different reasons… actually that’s not true. Once I explained my reasoning, she agreed 100% with me about it… but she’s still holding on to her reason too.

What am I talking about?

Well…

K.E. mentioned in her dedication – that her brother is holding on to the determination that this series of hers will be made into a movie.

After reading only two of the books in the series, my mum said the same thing.

What she said was something along the lines of – “Yeah, I can see them making a movie from these books.”

I agreed and then started to say why I would never watch it – but she presented her reasoning first and then I got distracted by one of the kiddos so I never got around to my reasoning until this morning.

My reasoning is this; no matter who the director is… no matter who the actors are… no matter who does the soundtrack (which could ONLY be truly epic if James Horner were still with us) – there is absolutely, positively NO WAY any movie could even begin to compare with the world in my head!

It’s simply not possible!

And we have both learned this lesson the hard way… many times. No movie is ever as fantastic as the world we build inside our imagination.

And sadly… the world loses a little something after we watch a less-than-perfect movie.

It is as if something precious has been taken from the vision we have in our mind. It’s a little less… real… to us, than it was before.

I DO NOT want that for this series!

I pray, fervently, that the series WILL be made into a movie – and when it is, I will encourage a lot of people to go and watch it… especially anyone who needs God in their life!

THE GATHERING | 3rd book in The Gifting Series by K. E. Ganshert (aka Katie Ganshert)

I am thrilled to have the final installment… but lamenting the fact that this AMAZING series is over! How will I go on…

How do I review this book without giving anything away…?

How can I go back and read it all over again – for the first time!

“How do I even begin to tell you what this book meant to me… what this series meant to me?”

K.E. Ganshert is an incredibly, amazingly, beautifully gifted author. She writes stories in a way that makes you feel as if you’re living them. She writes worlds as if there is no other. She writes characters in such a way that it feels as though you’re reading yourself – you slip into the character’s skin as easily as you slip into a pool of water. I fully expect to look up and see Rosie sitting across from me with those puppy-dog eyes, begging for the rest of my dinner.

But the best thing about this series… Unlike many YA dystopian, speculative and supernatural novels on the market today – it does not erase hope. It does not give us a bleak outlook of a world where we have to lose almost everything to win, or a world where only by stripping us down to almost nothing – can we survive.

The Gifting series GIVES us hope! It gives us hope for tomorrow… hope for today… hope for forever.

I do not recommend many of the YA series that are so popular today but I feel very strongly that this is a series EVERYONE should read!

And by the way… I receive a lot of books free in exchange for an honest review. Not this one – this was a book I purchased. Actually it was pre-ordered for me by my AWESOME mom, because I was so frantic to read it ASAP – which you can see… I have done!

And I had to share my opinion with you – my readers!

And also laugh hysterically because there are probably a dozen traditional publishers who are grinding their teeth in frustration that they missed the chance to make a TON of money off this series!

A bit more about The Gathering via Amazon:

Darkness is a tricky thing. Especially when it cloaks itself in light.

Luka isn’t dead. He’s not beyond saving. Tess knows because she saw him with her own eyes. After what she saw, she’s sure of one thing: If they don’t rescue him soon, Luka won’t be Luka anymore.

If only she could convince the other members of the hub. They’re not sure Tess saw what she claims she saw. And they’re preoccupied by the fact that their kind is being systematically eradicated. Answers lie in an ancient prophecy, one that revolves around a seventeen-year-old girl who never asked for any of this.

K.E. Ganshert’s final installment in The Gifting Series brings readers on an action-packed journey through loss, sacrifice, betrayal, and the impossible choice between what we want most and what we know is right.

The Gifting Series by K. E. Ganshert (aka Katie Ganshert)

I am going to review BOTH books; The Gifting and The Awakening in this one post because I’m too excited about the series not to!

And please excuse the silent scream in the background as I write… TORTURED because I WANT THE NEXT BOOK!!!!!!

Never judge a book by it’s synopsis!

OH MY WORD! The synopsis doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of this AMAZING story!

However, I will say; that first line is INTRIGUING…

“If science is right, then I am crazy. And crazy is dangerous.”

See… intriguing.

Immediately, you want to know what she means. I mean – I know there are crazy people in the world who are dangerous but what exactly is it that makes her crazy and how is it dangerous?

For most people, that would be all they need but I have to tell you, at this point, that it took me a long time to decide I should read the book – simply because of the game mentioned in the synopsis.

I’m not a fan… well, Tess isn’t either. YAY!

Anyway, I SOOOO should have given in and read this long ago – when it first came out. Of course, I would have been absolutely insane waiting a month for the next book… especially considering I have nearly three months until “The Gathering” is available and I’m already going nuts!

If you are at all a fan of science fiction, dystopian, fantasy or speculative fiction – this is not a book to miss! Actually, if you enjoy adventure, mystery or magical realism – you would love this book too!

It is just an AMAZING book! I simply can’t say it enough!

Katie (K.E.) will have you glued to your seat and your nose buried in the story while you’re up to your ears in our heroine’s confusion and devastation!

A bit more about the book via GoodReads:

“If science is right, then I am crazy. And crazy is dangerous.”

Tess Eckhart has always felt things nobody else can feel. Then the Ouija board incident happens at a high school party. Her complete freakout sends her family across the country—next to a nationally-renowned facility for the mentally ill. Worried that Tess suffers from the same illness that tormented her grandmother, her parents insist she see a psychiatrist.

But Tess is more concerned about fitting in at her new school, and hiding the fact that she’s seeing a therapist at the Edward Brooks Facility. She’s used to whispers and stares, but when it comes to Luka Williams, a reluctantly popular boy in her class, she’s unused to a stare that intense. Then the headaches start, and the seemingly prophetic dreams that haunt her at night. As Tess tries to hide them, she becomes increasingly convinced that Luka knows something—that he might somehow be responsible.

But what if she’s wrong? What if Luka Williams is the only thing separating her from a madness too terrifying to fathom?

The Awakening

Here is where the screaming comes in…

First, it was incredibly difficult not to scream at anyone who dared interrupt me while I was reading this book.

I ignored my phone. I ignored my e-mail. I ignored everything. Fortunately, my children were happily playing or watching a movie during much of this time.

Second, when I reached the end of that last chapter – it was incredibly difficult to make myself do a silent scream – like the one I talked about earlier – which I had to do because everyone else was asleep.

DON’T THEY REALIZE how devastating it was! Surely they would have forgiven me. Surely they would have understood.

No, I’m sure they would not. They would have groused and told me to get over myself and go to sleep.

But the story was over… AND I DIDN’T WANT IT TO BE!

Then… third… when Katie (K.E.) teased me with the openings of book 3.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The agony of that tiny little peek into a story so immediately intriguing – I could hardly stand to put the book down when I’d reached the end. It was physically painful and it was all I could do not to scream and kick my feet.

No, I didn’t remember that I’m too old for tantrums – I remembered how grumpy my family can be when they’re woken up. So I checked my e-mail until I had calmed down enough to sleep.

And now I’m chomping at the bit to get the next book… yes, again!

I’ve subscribed to K.E.’s Newsletter so that I can’t possibly miss the news!

Counting the days… impatiently.

A bit more about The Awakening:

I can’t go home. It’s not safe. Nowhere is.

Tess Eckhart isn’t crazy. She’s not suffering from psychosis. She and Luka Williams are part of The Gifting. Before they can find out what that means, the man with all the answers turns up dead. The only thing he left behind? A few patient files that lead to the nation’s most lawless city.

With authorities chasing them, Luka and Tess escape into the very heart of peril and against all odds, find an underground community of people just like them. They aren’t gathered together for the sole purpose of survival, either. They have a plan and a purpose–to awaken as many people with The Gifting as possible. It’s dangerous and deadly work. Tess wants to help. Luka is desperate to keep her safe–a task that proves increasingly difficult as Tess’s gifting comes to light.

Is Tess Eckhart the One they’ve been waiting for? The One with the power to save them all?

DO NOT MISS THIS SERIES!

Disclaimer: I did NOT receive either of these books free in exchange for an honest review! I (well actually my mum) BOUGHT them both!

But I had to share my opinion of two such amazing books with you – my readers!

And also laugh hysterically because there are probably a dozen traditional publishers who are grinding their teeth in frustration that they missed the chance to make a TON of money off this series!

HA HA HA!

“Siren’s Fury” – now I have to go back and read book 1

OK… if you had asked me a year ago (actually… more like two at this point) if this was considered Christian fiction, I probably would have said “Huh…that’s really a thing?”, but as I’m reading more and more in the genre, I’m discovering that Christian Speculative fiction has spread its influence far and wide.

And Siren’s Fury is a prime example of that!

It’s an intriguing read and one I think most teens wold enjoy.

Interesting also; to think that you can find God’s plan – in a fictional story, about a girl who “shouldn’t” exist, in a magical land at war.

And inspiring that Nym has found a way to be “good” and “help” with her elemental gift. With such power, it could easily have gone the other way. In fact, considering how much Nym detests her powers, it’s amazing that she sets off in search of a way to get them back… in order to save the day!

No, she’s not perfect – are any of us? Yes, the world around her is full of evil, despicable people – isn’t ours as well?

As far as the series goes, this kept the story going in a good way and has fans salivating for the next book!

Not necessarily a series I ever saw myself reading but I can’t say I’m sorry I picked it up! If you enjoy reading about magic and fantastical powers – have at it!

And it’s a clean read… especially by today’s standards. LOL!

Review © JCMorrows 2015

Here is a brief synopsis from Thomas Nelson

Nym risked her life to save Faelen, her homeland, from a losing war, only to discover that the shapeshifter Draewulf has stolen everything she holds dear. But when the repulsive monster robs Nym of her storm-summoning abilities as well, the beautiful Elemental realizes her war is only just beginning.

Now powerless to control the elements that once emboldened her, Nym stows away on an airship traveling to the metallic kingdom of Bron. She must stop Draewulf. But the horrors he’s brought to life and the secrets of Bron are more than Nym bargained for. Then the disturbing Lord Myles tempts her with new powers that could destroy the monster, and Nym must decide whether she can compromise in the name of good even if it costs her very soul.

As she navigates the stark industrial cityscape of Bron, Nym is faced with an impossible choice: change the future with one slice of a blade . . . or sacrifice the entire kingdom for the one thing her heart just can’t let go.

Guess what releases today! | “The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest” by Melanie Dickerson

And Here is why you have to go get it and read it!!!

Thomas Nelson has made an excellent choice with Melanie’s newest story and they’ve made this fan a very happy reader!

I could hardly wait to get my hands on this one and once I did, I couldn’t read it fast enough!

Melanie Dickerson tells – or I should say retells – fairy tales better than anyone else I’ve ever read!

Once you start reading, you won’t be able to put it down either. Not only are the stories fascinating, the characters are exceptionally crafted and the fairy tale elements are perfectly sprinkled in to make this just as wonderful as anything you will have read by Grimm or Perrault!

In this case, Melanie has taken two stories and woven them together to create a rich tapestry of danger, deception and daring-do!

I refuse to give away even a shred of this magnificent story but I will tell you that Melanie’s talent has taken the extra step required to move from the YA market to a book that will appeal to Adults just as much… maybe even more than Melanie’s young adult audience.

I will say this though… do NOT think you know what’s coming with this story! Melanie will not only have you swooning with her romance, she’ll have you on the edge of your seat with the danger Odette faces. And you will NEVER see the end coming!

“An Uncertain Choice” by Jody Hedlund | YA DEBUT

Well, I’ll say this… Jody Hedlund excels at starting things off with a bang!

Let me say this also – if you are at all squeamish, have a weak stomach or a sensitive nature, you might want to rethink this read.

I can hardly believe it’s classified as young adult because the opening chapter alone is certainly not what I would present to a young audience.

But then, Jody has 10+ books under her belt so she may know more about it than me – so don’t just take my word for it.

Despite being too much for my tender Mercy’s heart, the book is incredibly well-written. In fact, it was all I could do to put it down… even when I was more than a little bothered by the content.

And possibly young adults today are more mature than I am giving them credit for and are perfectly able to handle such things but I know I am not and I’m 35.

Of course I discovered that when I tried to read about WWII…

Certain authors understand the squeamishness of their audience and write in such a way to show the horrors of real life without making it quite so descriptive.

This is not the first story of Jody Hedlund’s I have read and it certainly won’t be the last. I am nearly obsessed with her new lighthouse series and I look forward to each and every one so she has not lost me as a reader… just maybe not of her medievel series.

By the way, I’m giving the book 3 stars because – even though it’s not for me – it is exceptionally well-written. It would have been 4 but I’m still not certain this particular story is suitable for young adults and I hope the 3 stars will catch more attention and perhaps more readers will see my warning.

A Chilling look at what may well – be our future…

The First Principle is certainly what I would call a MUST READ! And I applaud Kregel Publishing for having the courage to stand up with women everywhere over a tremendously important issue!

This story hits home pretty hard for me as I was strongly encouraged by several family members to rid myself of a problem I was clearly not ready to handle – before my son was born.

Now, I was not a teenager and I am so very blessed I do not live in the same society outlined between these pages!

Because if I did, I would probably not have my precious babies – either one of them. And that would be a tragedy!

Now onto my review…

WOW! Just WOW! ~ From the front cover to the words on the back cover, this is just an exceptional book!

The frightening part is that many people could read this book and fail to see just what the problems are with how things work in the present government system…

However, I feel that Marissa Shrock does an excellent job of communicating how different a person’s outlook can be when they themself are in the hot seat.

Vivica’s ideals are a tiny bit shaky from the very beginning – she accepts what is – mostly because she has been told to accept it her entire life, but there is a niggling doubt. And it is that doubt that brings to light just how heinous the system is when she finds herself in trouble!

From there, the story just keeps spiraling deeper and deeper. Do not be fooled – this story is not just about teen pregnancy. There is a web of deceit and subterfuge laced throughout the pages that would impress even the most astute mystery reader!

And the underlying premise – salvation and redemption!

WOW! Just WOW!

I wish I could afford to buy and distribute copies of this book to every abortion clinic in the world. If even one mother changed her mind about what she is about to do after reading it, it would be worth EVERY penny because THERE IS NO PRICE you can put on a HUMAN LIFE!

I am SOOOO excited to discover that Miss Schrock is already busy on a sequel!

Don’t miss this compelling look at what could very well be our future.Tweet this!

About The First Principle via Kregel:

The First Principle: A Novel by Marissa Shrock

In the not-too-distant future, the United Regions of America has formed. Governors hold territories instead of states, and while Washington, DC, is gone, the government has more control than ever before. For fifteen-year-old Vivica Wilkins, the daughter of a governor, this is life as usual. High school seems pretty much the same–until one day, that controlling power steps right through the door during study hall.

When Vivica speaks out to defend her pregnant friend against the harsh treatment of Population Management Officer Marina Ward, she has no idea she’s sowing the seeds of a revolution in her own life. But it isn’t long before she discovers her own illegal pregnancy. Now she has to decide whether to get the mandatory abortion–or follow her heart, try to keep the baby, and possibly ruin her mother’s chances at becoming president.

A rebel group called the Emancipation Warriors, who are fighting to restore freedoms once held unalienable, offer her asylum. Can Vivica trust these rebels to help her or will they bring everything crashing down around her? Accepting their help may come with consequences she isn’t ready to face.

Marissa Shrock’s debut novel crafts a chilling story of what may be to come if we allow the economic and moral crises currently facing our country to change the foundations on which we built our independence–and of the difference one person can make when they choose to trust God’s lead.

An early look at “The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest” by Melanie Dickerson

I LOVE being a book reviewer!

When he meets the lovely and refined Odette at the festival and shares a connection during a dance, he has no idea she is the one who has been poaching the margrave’s game.

But will the discovery of a local poaching ring reveal a terrible secret? Has the meat she thought she was providing for the poor actually been sold  on the black market, profiting no one except the ring of black market sellers?

The one person Odette knows can help her could also find out her own secret and turn her over to the margrave, but she has no choice. Jorgen and Odette will band together to stop the dangerous poaching ring . . . and fall in love. But what will the margrave do when he discovers his forester is protecting a notorious poacher?

Book 3 in Amy Clipston’s YA series! | Miles From Nowhere – an EARLY look!

I’ll be honest with you. I was worried about this book.

I mean… I read YA but it’s almost always fairy tales or Amish fiction – and I was concerned that I would not be able to connect with this story.

I was wrong.

WOW! I identified with Chelsea in so many ways, ways I never expected. Even reading the back of the book, I didn’t really “get it”. Until I started reading the book that is.

This book will appeal to young adults because they are either going through the very things Chelsea is dealing with in her life or they’ve watched a friend go through it.

It will appeal to adults because we will be reminded of our youth. It’s like a doorway we can look through to our own past. Amy has somehow managed to capture that and it’s amazing.

I mean, I knew she was a great writer but I don’t think I realized how great until I read this story. And it makes me want to go back and read her other young adult stories.

I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to give the story away but I can remember how easy it is to be distracted by an exciting boy. This story brings back the memories of my teen years in sharp clarity.

A MUST read!

Amy Clipston has found the way to show us a look back at our past!Tweet this!

Here is what Zondervan has to say about Miles From Nowhere:

Chelsea Morris has always been responsible, dependable, and focused on her dreams of fashion design—a dream that will officially begin come fall, when she leaves for college in New York City. And as she settles into her role as the lead designer for the local summer stock theater group, she decides to make the most of her last summer in North Carolina. But with her best friend Emily busy working late and spending time with Zander, and tensions with Chelsea’s boyfriend, Todd, running high, the summer she envisioned seems to be falling flat.

Then Dylan joins the latest summer production. There’s something about the college boy that makes her feel free and alive, and soon she’s broken up with Todd, and is sneaking out late to meet Dylan at parties and breaking rules at the playhouse. But before she knows it, her exciting nights are interfering with her job, her role on the play, as well as her relationship with Emily and with her parents. Worse, Chelsea finds herself feeling more and more estranged from God.

As the summer becomes wilder than she ever dreamed, Chelsea must decide if her heart is leading her in the right direction after all.

Miles From Nowhere will be available EVERYWHERE in April!Tweet this!

The One by Kiera Cass | Review and Look Back!

Once upon a time…

I read The Selection Selection. Then I read The Elite Elite.

I was thrilled to discover a novella – The Prince Prince released between the two books and then a special book containing that story, another novella and a ton of extras between the release of The Elite and The One. I could barely contain my excitement and I was quite put out with the local bookstores when I found out that most of them didn’t even stock copies of The Selection Stories The Selection Stories but I finally managed to get my hands on one and then I read through the series again!

Unfortunately, I had also recently read a young adult series (don’t ask – truly… you don’t want to know) that was written by another author I respected and admired – only to discover that the series itself was not at all what I was expecting – It just goes to show that I should listen to my son when it comes to books to read or not read!

That experience sent me into a funk where I suppose you could say I temporarily lost my love of reading. Even books that had previously been favorites – seemed terrible to me. It was a rough time and it was exceedingly difficult to write positive reviews for books that I knew were just being affected by my funk.

It took quite a bit of time but I finally found my way through and began to enjoy reading again. I’ve since gone back to read many of the books I did not enjoy during that period of time and they were indeed as wonderful as I suspected – the second time through anyway.

I’d love to say that I rushed out to get a copy of The One at that point but I wasn’t sure of it. After all there were so many things that I wasn’t sure of. Was it only the other series that put me in my funk? Could it possibly be my new-found obsession with Inspirational fiction that turned me off the Selection series?

So I waited… and waited… and waited.

imageI didn’t even know the series had been expanded into 5 books with even more novellas and extras slotted for a second installment of The Selection Stories. Imagine my surprise and elation to discover that happy news just a few nights ago when I snagged the kindle version of The One and started feverishly reading!

I was sucked back into a world I had desperately missed… I just hadn’t realized it.

I enjoyed, tremendously, sinking back into America’s world. It was like wrapping a warm, fuzzy blanket around me – reading about my favorite characters, rooting for the ones I wanted to win –  I say ones because I was not just rooting for America. When I followed the series before, a lot of people were rooting for America to LOSE the selection and choose Aspen. I was not. I was rooting for Maxon all along!

Along the way I’ve rooted for others to go or stay and I have to say, after reading to the end of The One, I’m a little surprised to say I miss a certain character. I didn’t think I would. In fact, at one point, I actually found myself hoping this person would be one of the casualties of a rebel attack (and for those of you who have read The One, I may not be talking about the person you would immediately think of) but I was truly saddened when they weren’t there anymore. It was quite a shock, let me tell you.

Technically speaking, I could be a lot more open in this review because there are spoilers out there everywhere! Even Kiera Cass herself has filled her blog with spoilers because of the next book that’s coming this May. You kinda have to know where the story went because The Heir is the next step and entirely due to what happened in The One. But I’m not one who puts spoilers out there – even when I really want to, because I have had more than one book ruined for me by spoilers and I feel it’s only fair to allow someone the chance to read a book on their own terms. If you want to seek out spoilers, there are plenty out there and they’re not hard to find but you won’t find any here.

Never spoil a book just because you can.Tweet this!

Now… about the book:

Some of the complaints I’ve heard over the last three years –

  • Kiera Cass doesn’t do enough world building – Well, in case you haven’t actually read the series, let me tell you right now that America is supposed to feel isolated. She has been sheltered and protected her entire life, even from the worst her caste has been exposed to. Since she was part of a lower caste, she didn’t exactly get to do a lot of traveling. Add to that, she barely leaves the castle once she is chosen for the selection and it all makes perfect sense. And I must say that Kiera does a spectacular job of building the world America is in!
  • Is yet another love triangle really necessary – Well we may find them annoying but they are a necessary evil sometimes. In this case, it wasn’t just a tool to push America into Prince Maxon’s arms… it was the push she needed to enter, it was the catalyst for her to be chosen, and it was the impetus that kept her there when she really didn’t want to be.
  • Kiera’s main character is ridiculously immature – Yes, America is immature but there are many good reasons for that and they unfold little by little throughout the entire series. It’s not just a ploy Kiera uses… although it does make for some very interesting mishaps.

To say I am happy with the series would be a tremendous understatement. This is definitely one of my absolute favorite book series! It’s one that I will happily read over and over and over again, and then pass on to my daughter when she’s old enough.

It’s just an all-around great series!

A lot of people have also complained about the series being extended. I have to say that I feel sorry for those people. No, this genre isn’t for everyone but to those of us who love it – this is GREAT news! I for one, can hardly wait and I’m kinda glad I just found out about it. Having to wait nearly a year after rediscovering how much I LOVE this series would have been torture!

I would also like to say how truly grateful I am that Kiera has given us so many novellas with extra, behind-the-scenes info! There is so much more that makes perfect sense when we read them. It doesn’t just give us more of the story to be excited about, it gives us vital bits of back-story that bring a lot of the story into a better focus for us.

Authors sometimes forget in their quest to make a quick-paced book, that we are not in their head. There may be things about the characters or the history that is left out in the interest of pacing or flow but it isn’t always easy for the reader to fully understand the characters without this information or history. Novellas are an excellent place for that! You can add short scenes that really have no place in the main book, but that are essential for understanding the characters or the world around them.

5star

All in all, a fantastic series and one I’m tickled to discover will continue… for at least two more books!

Don’t miss a single one of the fabulous Selection stories!Tweet this!

More about The One from HarperTeen:

The Selection changed America Singer’s life in ways she never could have imagined. Since she entered the competition to become the next princess of Illéa, America has struggled with her feelings for her first love, Aspen—and her growing attraction to Prince Maxon. Now she’s made her choice . . . and she’s prepared to fight for the future she wants.

Find out who America will choose in The One, the enchanting, beautifully romantic third book in the Selection series!

“Trading Secrets” by Melody Carlson

We need more books like this!

Teens today need better role models – role models like the ones in Melody Carlson’s books!

No, they’re not perfect… but who is! At least there is a strong moral to Melody’s story.

One of which is that it’s never a good idea to tell a lie.

Having an Amish pen pal has really gained  popularity in recent years  and it’s really exciting to read about such a unique experience.

Ironically, I recently had a similar experience myself – several people made the comment that they thought “JC” was a man… which is why I’ve now posted my picture – to be certain everyone knows I am not, in fact, a man.

And don’t you want to know what happens with Micah and her pen pal when he finds out she is also not a boy…?

It’s great fun!

Not a story to be missed! And so exciting that I have a wonderful book that I can pass on to my daughter in a few years – I say a few years because she’s only 8 at the moment – although now that I think about it, she could probably handle it now because she’s incredibly mature for her age. And she LOVES to read!

Just as I know you will LOVE to read this book!

And now I am going to go in search of more books by Melody Carlson!

More from Revell/Baker Publishing about Trading Secrets:

The truth may set you free–but it might also land you in some uncomfortably hot water.

Over the years, Micah Knight has exchanged many letters–and many secrets–with her longtime Amish pen pal, Zach. But Micah’s kept quiet on the biggest secret of all–the fact that despite her name, she’s a girl.

Now Micah finally has the chance to meet her pen pal face-to-face. She wants nothing more than to experience life on Zach’s Amish farm, but she’s more than a little anxious. Will he be angry at her for deceiving him all these years? And will she risk losing his friendship to find something more?

The Word Changers by Ashlee Willis | Not your typical fairy tale…

There is a twist to “The Word Changers” that I did not see coming.

The blurb does not make it clear that the King is also the director/dictator of “the plot”. That’s quite a twist!

And it’s the only spoiler you’ll get out of me…

I don’t believe I’ve ever read this type of idea in a story. They say there are no new ideas – but with this story… I don’t know, it sounds original to me!

What reader doesn’t dream about getting sucked into their favorite book!

Now, when I say I’ve never read about this specific idea – I should mention that I have read/watched other books/movies about getting sucked into a book.

However, in those stories, the characters had no idea they were inside the covers of a book. They just participated in the story as it was written.

This story is very different. The characters in this book are very much aware of the fact that they are in a book. They all act and react according to “the plot”. And that is what makes the book unique.

So I suppose the above statement is at least half true… the story is a new twist on an old idea.

Ashlee does a wonderful job with her descriptions. The settings come alive, the story line is exceptionally vivid – holding your attention to the very end, and her characters are believable, growing with the story – as characters should.

Dave Bruskas’ advice for Sons | A wonderful parent’s guide by Tynedale House

If you read this post an hour ago when it posted, you may have noticed that it was incomplete.

We had a few technical difficulties but I think I’ve got them all sorted out now.

Today I am reviewing “Dear Son” by David Bruskas.

I mostly requested this book because I am a single mother and I need all the help I can get with my young son – who is 11 at the moment.

And my advice to you, is to
BUY THIS BOOK!

Whether you ARE a father, or you plan to become a father some day… Whether you are a single mother or a man who is new to Faith and in need of help along the way… If you are a man who has not been the father you need to be or the son who needs to heal the relationship with their own father.

This is the book for you!

This is the book for ALL fathers, sons, young men about to become fathers or single mothers who don’t know how to teach their sons what they’re missing from the father who should be there.

Dave Bruskas GETS IT. So many people today say that things have changed – and while that is certainly true – God has not changed and he never will. And, while our world is confusing and troubled – the relationship between father and son is just as vital as it always has been.

Now, I am not a man or a young boy but I had a distressing relationship with my father for years and when I finally began to realize that I needed to treat him the way the Bible told me to, we began to relate in a way that we never have. I can only imagine the drastic changes we would see in this country if all young men began to do this as well.

One thing Dave Bruskas seems to understand better than most pastors I know is that God truly is a Father to the Fatherless – even those who have a father who is physically there but doesn’t really know how to BE a father. Most of us don’t think about those children. We focus on the children who don’t have a father physically present in their lives. Those are the kids who miss out – right?

Not the ones who understand that God is their Father!

There are parts of this book that are a bit brutal and I applaud that. Too many people tiptoe around the truth because they’re concerned they might possibly offend someone. And, while I am not a fan of the harsh ways some people try to evangelize (bloody pictures of Christ on the side of a bus or truck or a depiction of what we think Hell might be like on a billboard), I do believe that people need to hear and see the truth. And sometimes that truth needs to be brutal.

The words may be harsh in places but the format of the book is not – quite the opposite actually. Dave writes a series of letters to the son he never got to see grow up. It’s heartbreaking but it gives a unique perspective that so many of us – with perfectly healthy young sons – take for granted.

I am truly blessed to have found this book and I am anxious to pass it on to my son. Most of the information in it is helpful to me right now but one day soon, he will need to read it too.

5star

Here is what Tynedale House Publishers has to say about “Dear Son”:

Today’s culture doesn’t encourage men to grow up.

Everyone from pastors to op-ed columnists have described a crisis of masculinity, fostered by a media culture that uniformly make men the butts of jokes.

Men are much more likely to give up on life than women. One indicator of this is the large gender difference in suicide rates—men are four times more likely than women to drop out of life. This points to a profound lack of effective mentoring of men, especially in the church.

Dave Bruskas seeks to fill in this gap with this book. Two decades ago, Dave lost his only infant son to a congenital heart defect. That devastating loss fueled his desire to provide effective mentoring to young men.

Dear Son contains the guidance and insights Dave would have given his son if he had lived through the milestones of growing up: from first dates to first jobs, from weddings to births, from friendships to funerals.

Dear Son contains heartfelt wisdom for life’s journey, especially for guys—and for those who want to strengthen them.

Pulled – A short story from the Flawed series by Becca Campbell

image

22 pages is NOT enough!

 Darn you Becca!

“Pulled” is a short story in Becca Campbell’s Flawed series and the only complaint I have is that it’s TOO SHORT!

I want more! And I’m sure you will too!

She give us just enough of these new characters to whet our appetite and then she yanks the rug out of from under her reader.

Hopefully, we will see the characters again soon in one of the other novels planned for her Flawed series!

You can find this short novella for Kindle and Nook and I’m told it will shortly be available on iTunes as well.

The story is not a continuation of Becca’s first book in the Flawed series, “Empath”.  It is a stand-alone side story in that same universe. We meet Juniper, a “runaway” foster child and Becca gives us just enough background to make us want more.

She also introduces us to several other characters who are “gifted” – like many of the characters we met in “Empath”.

It may be labeled YA and it may be a story about an 8 year old girl but Becca caught me with the very first sentence – which would be why I was so shocked at the sudden ending. I’m sure that was part of her evil plan…lol

All told, a most intriguing story and well worth the sticker price of $.99

Don’t miss it! And watch for Becca’s next story in the Flawed series: “Outsider”

4 Stars

What GoodReads has to say about “Pulled :

Eight-year-old Juniper has been labeled many things—troubled kid, orphan, runaway—but none of her foster families have known what she really is: a girl with a unique and brutally inconvenient ability to teleport.

Her spontaneous jumps are not only beyond her control, they get her into trouble. When Juniper disappears, no one believes her wild stories, so she’s stopped trying to convince them.

One day when Juniper gets pulled away, finding her way back is harder than ever. Stranded on the side of a deserted highway, she must rely on her own instincts to determine who is a creepy stranger and who she can trust.

Resourcefulness may get her home, but is getting home enough when you don’t have parents that love you?

Juniper knows something most people don’t: there are others like her with unexplained abilities. Until now, she’s exercised stranger-danger caution, but maybe these people can offer what she needs.

Will Juniper find a family she can share her secrets with?

A Look Back at “The Captive Maiden” by Melanie Dickerson | The BEST Cinderella story I have ever read!

The Captive Maiden 300

Yes I did. I went back and read “The Captive Maiden” again!

And it was JUST as wonderful the second time through!

Even knowing what to expect did not detract from the romance and excitement of the story.

From my original review:

This is a wonderful story! Melanie Dickerson did a great job of molding a popular fairy tale into an inspirational story for teens that, I think, will appeal to adults as well.

It’s also an answer to a prayer since I am hesitant about letting my daughter read more traditional fairy tales – which focus so much on magic. Now I can collect the previous 3 books Melanie has written and any more that are yet to come.

Melanie Dickerson has taken out the magic and weaved God into every part of this story. So instead of confusing teens, Melanie Dickerson offers hope and truth.

What a blessing!

And it truly is! It is such a blessing to read a real fairy tale. It is also incredibly refreshing to read about heroes and villains who are clearly just human. The villains of Cinderella are famous – evil stepmother, evil stepsisters, being poor… But Melanie Dickerson added an extra villain to this wonderful story and I was so relieved to see that he was all too human – with human weaknesses and flaws.

And speaking of human flaws – it is beyond refreshing to read about a big strong knight who is absolutely unnerved by tears. There are quite a few men who suffer from this particular flaw and young girls need to know about this sort of thing.

The story itself is an absolute gem. In “The Fairest Beauty”, we watched a handsome young man who was clever with words win the maiden’s heart and then, when she met her betrothed – she found him frightening and overwhelming…she even thought he was somewhat of a bully. But she was seeing him through the eyes of his brother and her perspective was most likely due to her love for him.

In “The Captive Maiden”, we see another young maiden’s reaction to that same brother and it could not be more different. It’s a prime example of seeing someone through the eyes of love – any young lady who is not in love with him would see only the rough battles scars, be intimidated by his size and feel put off by his lack of finesse when it comes to words. However, these are the very things that should endear him to the woman who loves him. That should be how love works and traditional fairy tales simply don’t get that point across. – in my humble opinion.

Melanie Dickerson does!

Here’s a further look at the story from Zondervan:

Happily Ever After …Or Happily Nevermore? Gisela’s childhood was filled with laughter and visits from nobles such as the duke and his young son. But since her father’s death, each day has been filled with nothing but servitude to her stepmother.

So when Gisela learns the duke’s son, Valten—the boy she has daydreamed about for years—is throwing a ball in hopes of finding a wife, she vows to find a way to attend, even if it’s only for a taste of a life she’ll never have. To her surprise, she catches Valten’s eye.

Though he is rough around the edges, Gisela finds Valten has completely captured her heart. But other forces are bent on keeping the two from falling further in love, putting Gisela in more danger than she ever imagined.

“The Fairest Beauty” | A retelling of Snow White by Melanie Dickerson

image

I find myself wishing I were a slower reader… Because now I have come to the end and I must wait until November to read the next story.

How will I survive?

Well I suppose I can always read “The Captive Maiden” again so there’s that. And I’m certain I can find some other books to help me pass the time.

But I want to know what happens next!

Absolutely no insult is intended to “The Captive Maiden” or “The Healer’s Apprentice” or “The Merchant’s Daughter”… but I do believe “The Fairest Beauty” is the absolute BEST book Melanie Dickerson has written yet!

“The Fairest Beauty” has everything you would expect to find in a fairy tale – A damsel in distress, mistaken identity, exaggerated rumors of the Princess’s death, an evil “Queen” – in this case a Duchess, a hired assassin and a hero!

It’s just an all-around GREAT story!

And the real-life fairy tale is so much more  appealing in my opinion! These are real people with real emotions and real flaws! – not some perfect, flawless combination of all the best traits and none of the worst that we see in the traditional fairy tales. Even the “bad guys” are clearly human, with flaws and weakness – not just a villain that’s purely evil who does nasty things simply because they can.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
I LOVE the way Melanie Dickerson writes fairy tales!

She doesn’t put the focus on the wrong things – magic and rebellion. She makes certain the focus is on how important it is to marry for love – which is Biblical (Marriage is meant to be forever… do you really want to be in a loveless marriage forever?). And she draws your attention to how important it is to remain pure and innocent – saving yourself for the man you marry.

This story especially – shows how important it is to understand the difference between love and lust.

It’s a difficult subject and not always a popular one in the world we live in today but it is an important one and I am very impressed to see an author taking a stand!

BRAVO MELANIE!

I wish these were the fairy tales I had grown up with. I can only imagine how different my outlook on life might be if I had not started with the ridiculous world view traditional fairy tales present.

All the more reason that these will be the fairy tales I give MY daughter to read!

All little girls need to know – while fairy tales can be real – they are not all about magic and luck!

Here is a bit about the book from Zondervan:

A daring rescue. A difficult choice.

Sophie desperately wants to get away from her stepmother’s jealousy, and believes escape is her only chance to be happy. Then a young man named Gabe arrives from Hagenheim Castle, claiming she is betrothed to his older brother, and everything twists upside down. This could be Sophie’s one chance at freedom—but can she trust another person to keep her safe?

Gabe defied his parents Rose and Wilhelm by going to find Sophie, and now he believes they had a right to worry: the girl’s inner and outer beauty has enchanted him. Though romance is impossible—she is his brother’s future wife, and Gabe himself is betrothed to someone else—he promises himself he will see the mission through, no matter what.

When the pair flee to the Cottage of the Seven, they find help—but also find their feelings for each other have grown. Now both must not only protect each other from the dangers around them—they must also protect their hearts.

Beauty and the Beast as seen by Melanie Dickerson | “The Merchant’s Daughter”

image

Melanie Dickerson has done it again!

These books truly are the absolute BEST versions I’ve ever seen of the classic fairy tales!

Melanie Dickerson brings together the romance of fairy tale and the harsh reality of life – blending them together seamlessly to tell a beautiful tale of Love, Healing and Forgiveness.

You think you know where the story is going and you think you know precisely how it’s all going to end up because the stories are following the classic fairy tale we all know… Right?

No.

Melanie Dickerson has surprising twists and turns all through the book that you will never see coming, all the while still weaving in bits from the original fairy tale. And you will find yourself so entranced with the story, you may not even realize it until later.

“The Merchant’s Daughter” once again deals with some hard-core themes. And once again Melanie Dickerson does so with class and diplomacy. There is no sugar coating but the descriptions are done in the best possible taste.

I recommend these books to anyone and everyone! In fact, I plan to introduce them to my daughter, instead of the more traditional fairy tales!

Personally I never understood how such tales became so very popular – especially in a time where magic and witchcraft was so suspect. People from the times described originally in these tales did not delight in magic and sorcery, they hunted down anyone suspected of it and dealt them a quick and harsh death. So why tales filled with such magic would ever have become popular, I have no idea. Unless it was simply the temptation of the forbidden – we humans do seem to have a particular weakness for wanting those things that we cannot have.

Melanie Dickerson has told these stories in such a realistic way – retaining the romance and excitement but adding in truth. And in my opinion, it makes them that much more appealing! I would rather my daughter have realistic fairy tales to grow up with and not ridiculous stories that could not possibly have happened – that I will one day have to tell her are entirely false and quite impossible.

Any woman would greatly enjoy these stories of adventure, love and danger.

And with Melanie Dickerson at the helm, you may know where you’ll end up but you can never accuse her of being predictable.

Here is what Zondervan has to say about “The Merchant’s Daughter”:

An unthinkable danger. An unexpected choice.

Annabel, once the daughter of a wealthy merchant, is trapped in indentured servitude to Lord Ranulf, a recluse who is rumored to be both terrifying and beastly. Her circumstances are made even worse by the proximity of Lord Ranulf’s bailiff—a revolting man who has made unwelcome advances on Annabel in the past.

Believing that life in a nunnery is the best way to escape the escalation of the bailiff’s vile behavior and to preserve the faith that sustains her, Annabel is surprised to discover a sense of security and joy in her encounters with Lord Ranulf.

As Annabel struggles to confront her feelings, she is involved in a situation that could place Ranulf in grave danger. Ranulf’s future, and possibly his heart, may rest in her hands, and Annabel must decide whether to follow the plans she has cherished or the calling God has placed on her heart.

Melanie Dickerson’s tale of the classic story – Sleeping Beauty – “The Healer’s Apprentice”

To think that I almost missed this series…image

I have to admit that I only read this book because my 10 year old son (who is now 11) told me that I had to read “The Captive Maiden”.

Now you’re wondering why…

Once upon a time, I signed up to win a copy of Melanie Dickerson’s “The Captive Maiden” and I won. I was surprised because I don’t usually win when I sign up for giveaways. I do it to show support for the author.

But apparently God meant for me to read this series!

I was not impressed when I started reading the book. The cruelty was almost too much for me and I stopped reading. Then my son picked up the book, looked at the cover and read the back. After that, he demanded that I read it. This was such a rare occurrence (usually he ignores the books I buy or teases me about it) that I knew I had to give it a try.

And again, it must have been God’s leading.

These books are the absolute BEST versions I’ve ever seen of what are typically know of as “classic” fairy tales!

I’ve read reviews that complain about the strong themes in these books and I’ve read reviews that say they wish more from the original tales had been incorporated. And I am here to tell you that, in my opinion, they are wrong.

Melanie Dickerson deals with hard-core themes, yes. But she does it in a way that is honest and realistic while maintaining, what some may feel are ridiculously, high standards of modesty and decency – but I find refreshing in a world of bared bodies and brutish language. Our children need to be aware of these things and how to deal with them, especially since they are very much a part of the world we live in today. As much as I would like to shelter them from everything bad or wrong in the world, they have to know that evil exists and they have to know how to confront it!

I feel that Melanie Dickerson presents these harsh issues with grace and discretion.

And as for having more from the original tales, I think it is amazing how well Melanie weaves the pieces of the classic fairy tales through her own stories – using them to help tell the story and reveal the hidden truths slowly throughout.

“The Healer’s Apprentice” is a masterpiece of reality blended flawlessly with fairy tale!

Melanie Dickerson’s characters are simply astonishing – well written, colorful and embodying the very same values and flaws of the heroes and villains that inspired them. And, as much as I would love to say that she always paints the bad guys as bad – it would not be true to life if that were the case.

Evil is deceptive and tricky and it is not always easy to see it for what it really is.

The plot is so well-conceived, it is difficult to believe this is the first book she wrote after fifteen years of not writing. It flows beautifully and there is absolutely nothing I can think that would add to it.

Amazing!

And now I have three more books to look forward to – “The Merchant’s Daughter” and “The Fairest Beauty” right now and “The Princess Spy” releases soon!

Exciting!

Just in case you’re still not convinced…

Here is what Zondervan says about the series

 Two Hearts. One Hope.

Rose has been appointed as a healer’s apprentice at Hagenheim Castle, a rare opportunity for a woodcutter’s daughter like her. While she often feels uneasy at the sight of blood, Rose is determined to prove herself capable. Failure will mean returning home to marry the aging bachelor her mother has chosen for her—a bloated, disgusting merchant who makes Rose feel ill.

When Lord Hamlin, the future duke, is injured, it is Rose who must tend to him. As she works to heal his wound, she begins to understand emotions she’s never felt before and wonders if he feels the same. But falling in love is forbidden, as Lord Hamlin is betrothed to a mysterious young woman in hiding.

As Rose’s life spins toward confusion, she must take the first steps on a journey to discover her own destiny.

“Jupiter Winds” by C.J. Darlington | WOW!

Jupiter Winds

OK. I have to admit… when I flipped the book over and looked at the back, I jumped.

Jupiter Winds Back CoverThose eyes are creepy. But they’re probably meant to be, so they definitely do their job.

DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK!

It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of Inspirational fiction or not, if you enjoy Dystopian OR Sci-Fi, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!

Yes, faith is an intricate part of the story but it is woven in so seamlessly and without sounding preachy, it’s clearly just an intrinsic piece of the whole.

Jupiter Winds is the 4th full-length published novel of C.J. Darlington who, when she didn’t get the answer she wanted from traditional publishers – decided to start her own (successful) publishing company along with her mother and sister.

And all I can say is, the traditional publishing agencies truly missed the boat this time!

“Jupiter Winds” could so easily knock “Divergent” off it’s tattooed pedestal.

This is a book that has it ALL. The government is taking merciless advantage, people are starving or being killed left and right for no reason, two teens are left alone to fend for themselves when their parents go missing and the coup de grâce – most of the book takes place on another planet!

And…get this. It’s a true dystopian – not like so many of these watered-down, almost dystopian novels that are getting their “15 minutes” and then fading into obscurity. It doesn’t just encompass an entire planet, it tells us about 2! And we don’t get a quick sound-bite either. We get a good back-story (and more than a little popping in here or there through the whole story) on what’s going on around the world. It’s GREAT!

There’s no lack of techno-sounding words or language progression in this story either. It’s in there!
From cosmoships to bioskin. The danger, the excitement, the knowing that something unthinkable could happen at any moment – It’s ALL in there!

There are surprises around every corner and no yawns anywhere. And don’t be lulled into complacency. Just because you’re getting close to the end does NOT mean there isn’t another surprise coming your way!

It’s a tough book to put down but, if you have to, I promise you’ll be rushing back to it as quickly as you can and you’ll get pulled right back into the story within the space of a sentence.

This is what Mountainview Press has to say about Jupiter Winds:

In 2160, a teenager becomes the bait to capture her missing revolutionary parents she thinks are long dead.

Grey Alexander has one goal—to keep herself and her younger sister Orinda alive. Not an easy feat living unconnected in the North American Wildlife Preserve, where they survive by smuggling contraband into the Mazdaar government’s city zones. If the invisible electric border fence doesn’t kill them, a human-like patrol drone could.

When her worst fear comes true, Grey questions everything she she thought she knew about life, her missing parents, and God. Could another planet, whose sky swirls with orange vapors and where extinct-on-Earth creatures roam free, hold the key to reuniting her family?

Goldtown Adventures Book 4 | “River of Peril” by Susan K. Marlow

20140410-084239.jpg

River of Peril is the fourth book in Susan K. Marlow’s Goldtown Adventuresseries.

Another terrific example of how well Susan K. Marlow blends fact with fiction. She takes these intriguing events from our past and blends them with adventure and discovery and kids of all ages will LOVE IT!

In this book we get to read about the dangers of riding by stagecoach and the dangers of messing with smugglers.

And that’s just what the kids are up to…

Susan K. Marlow once again blends faith and fact with fiction and delivers a thrilling tale of young kids off on an adventure, getting into trouble and following God’s prompting to get out.

Another great story! Another great message!

And another story the kids will love and enjoy! They might even learn something. That’s one of the best things about the books in this series. Susan takes real things that kids should be learning in school and wraps it up in adventure so that it sticks in a kid’s mind.

A great read. And, even though I’m not a twelve year old boy, I find myself hoping there are more to come.

Here is a bit more about the book from Kregel:

Jem Coulter thinks his family is just on a sightseeing trip to the big city of Sacramento. Then armed bandits hold up the stagecoach for the secret stash they’re carrying: gold for the Union Army fighting the distant Civil War! Suddenly war isn’t so far away; it’s right there on the road to Sacramento, with Jem’s father, the sheriff of Goldtown, fighting against the rebel army’s Knights of the Golden Circle.

When the family finally reaches the city, they think they’re safe at last. Setting out to see the sights, Jem, his sister Ellie, and their cousin Nathan make a new friend. But is Henry the pal they think he is? With a father who is a die-hard Confederate, could Henry be in cahoots with the thieves?

River of Peril gives readers ages 8 to 12 the fast-moving, exciting adventure they’ve come to expect in this series, as well as a glimpse into the history of post–Gold Rush and Civil War life in 1860s California, with stagecoaches, steamboats, stowaways—and lots of gold!

Goldtown Adventures Book 3 | “Canyon of Danger” by Susan K. Marlow

20140410-084205.jpg

Canyon of Danger is the third book in Susan K. Marlow’s Goldtown Adventures series.

In Canyon of Danger we get to watch Jem be “the man of the family” while his father is away. The story seems to follow a pretty standard track you see with this kind of tale – where everything that can, does – go wrong.

I won’t give it all away but the back of the book mentions an injured stranger, the loss of Jem’s horse and a wolf that is stalking their cattle. I will tell you that these things are just the tip of the iceberg.

I absolutely LOVE how well Susan weaves God and faith through the entire book.

These days most twelve year old boys are too busy with video games or skateboards to think much about God, so it’s very refreshing to read about a young man who regularly calls on God and actually listens for answers.

My eleven year old son has not yet been caught up in these stories but I hope to change that very soon. If I can just get him to sit down with one of them for five minutes, I’m confident he won’t be able to put it down.

I recommend these books for all young boys – those who know God and those who need him!

And they would make an excellent addition to a school reading list because Susan K. Marlow also has an exceptional talent for combining real events with the fictional ones. That makes them educational as well as fun!

Here is a bit more about the book from Kregel:

Jem Coulter’s pa, the sheriff of Goldtown, is away on a trip to deliver a prisoner to Sacramento, and he has left Jem in charge of the ranch—along with Aunt Rose, that is.

No sooner is the sheriff gone then trouble starts—a dead calf, a mysterious stranger, and then Pa’s horse, Copper, and his prize rifle are stolen. And Pa’s deputies seem unconcerned.

Jem and his cousin Nathan find Copper’s tracks end at a dark canyon up in the hills. Jem remembers an old Indian legend Strike-it-rich Sam is fond of retelling about people disappearing and no one ever seeing them again. What is the real story of the canyon of danger? Have thieves found the perfect hideout?

Readers ages 8 to 12 will be entertained by the adventurous spirit and historical lure in this fast-moving series that teaches about life in the post–Gold Rush days of 1860s California. Quick-paced plots and unforgettable characters make these books fun for the whole family.
