“Harvest Festival” | Newest installment in the wonderful series that has been continued by the talented Mike Berenstain!

OK… before I get started, I just have to mention this CRAZY article I ran across about a week ago. No, before you go read it, be WARNED – it’s not 100% clean and the comments are worse… LINK

The article postulates that we are living in an alternate dimension… I know it sounds more like science fiction than reality but the hook was this: The article’s author claims they remember The Berenstain Bears being the Berenstein Bears.

Funny thing is; I do too! In fact, I can remember asking my mother if it was pronounced “stane” or “stine“. I had an unfortunate experience in elementary school involving a character named “Ace”. I won’t go into the whole painful thing here but I’m sure you get the idea… That incident is seared into my memory by association.

What does this have to do with my review? Nothing. It’s just an intriguing puzzle – one that will most likely never be solved because for every group that remembers “ei”, there are just as many who remember “ai”… and just as many who never read the books so they have no idea.
Now that we’ve had our twilight zone moment for the day…

I still remember reading these wonderful books when I was a kid… of course that was when Stan & Jan were writing them.

And it is so wonderful to have this amazing series continuing so I can share the stories with my own children.

Harvest Festival is a wonderful story about the TRUE meaning of Thankfulness – something we should ALL be reminded of. So it’s a great book for children AND their parents.

Bless you Mike, for having the courage to present wholesome and Biblical stories that kids will enjoy for many years! And hopefully, share with their own children!

Don’t miss this book. And be on the lookout for more from Mike Berenstain! I know I will!

“Siren’s Fury” – now I have to go back and read book 1

OK… if you had asked me a year ago (actually… more like two at this point) if this was considered Christian fiction, I probably would have said “Huh…that’s really a thing?”, but as I’m reading more and more in the genre, I’m discovering that Christian Speculative fiction has spread its influence far and wide.

And Siren’s Fury is a prime example of that!

It’s an intriguing read and one I think most teens wold enjoy.

Interesting also; to think that you can find God’s plan – in a fictional story, about a girl who “shouldn’t” exist, in a magical land at war.

And inspiring that Nym has found a way to be “good” and “help” with her elemental gift. With such power, it could easily have gone the other way. In fact, considering how much Nym detests her powers, it’s amazing that she sets off in search of a way to get them back… in order to save the day!

No, she’s not perfect – are any of us? Yes, the world around her is full of evil, despicable people – isn’t ours as well?

As far as the series goes, this kept the story going in a good way and has fans salivating for the next book!

Not necessarily a series I ever saw myself reading but I can’t say I’m sorry I picked it up! If you enjoy reading about magic and fantastical powers – have at it!

And it’s a clean read… especially by today’s standards. LOL!

Here is a brief synopsis from Thomas Nelson

Nym risked her life to save Faelen, her homeland, from a losing war, only to discover that the shapeshifter Draewulf has stolen everything she holds dear. But when the repulsive monster robs Nym of her storm-summoning abilities as well, the beautiful Elemental realizes her war is only just beginning.

Now powerless to control the elements that once emboldened her, Nym stows away on an airship traveling to the metallic kingdom of Bron. She must stop Draewulf. But the horrors he’s brought to life and the secrets of Bron are more than Nym bargained for. Then the disturbing Lord Myles tempts her with new powers that could destroy the monster, and Nym must decide whether she can compromise in the name of good even if it costs her very soul.

As she navigates the stark industrial cityscape of Bron, Nym is faced with an impossible choice: change the future with one slice of a blade . . . or sacrifice the entire kingdom for the one thing her heart just can’t let go.

The “Princess Joy Sticker and Activity Book” Joy’s book is just as popular as Grace’s!

PINK!

My daughter LOVES PINK!

So… of course this book was a tremendous hit!

I actually have to work pretty hard to incorporate other colors into her life… wardrobe… decor… etc – because if I did not, it would ALL be pink.

So if your little princess loves pink… or even likes pink she will absolutely LOVE this book!

Of course the color is only the tip of what is great about this book!

Activities… Stickers… A great story… and SHH… a BIRTHDAY celebration!.

I also love that we get to meet the other princesses in this book! If I’d been thinking, I would have looked through the books and given her this one first…LOL

Really GREAT timing since this book is a surprise for her Birthday!

Now I have to go hunt down the rest of the books in this series…

The “Princess Grace Sticker and Activity Book” is a terrific book to get the little princess in your family!

If you have a little princess in your family… as I do… she will absolutely LOVE this book!

And may I say how excited I was to find this! The book has fun activities AND stickers that your little princess will get hours of enjoyment from.

Just make sure you tell her beforehand that she is to put the stickers ONLY in the book…

But that isn’t all you will find in the pages! There is a wonderful little story about Princess Grace and her kitten… and let me tell you, Kittens are VERY popular at my house so my daughter was thrilled!

Writing this review actually required quite a bit of finesse on my part as I got these books for my daughter and had the brilliant (albeit, not very well thought out) idea to give them to her for her birthday!

Not the first time she’s caught me with a book that was supposed to be a surprise. LOL!

Book 4 in Amy Clipston’s Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series releases TODAY!

A Simple Prayer is the long awaited 4th novel in Amy Clipston’s “The Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel” series and it releases TODAY! Yes, I got an early look! I LOVE being a book reviewer!

A Simple Prayer by Amy CLipston

This has been one of my absolute favorite series!

In A Hopeful Heart, Hannah met Trey… and had to face a very hard decision.

In A Mother’s Secret, single mother, Carolyn (not something you typically read in an Amish novel by the way) the love of her life… it just takes some time to figure that out.

Their story is continued in “An Amish Cradle” – in Amy’s novella: “A Son for Always” by the way…

In A Dream of Home, we meet our most unlikely couple and we get to watch them go through such an unexpected courtship. It’s so very exciting!

The final book in this series is every bit as wonderful as the other three…

And what a powerful story.

Amy has a particular talent for writing characters who are so beautifully flawed. I’m not just talking about Linda Zook either…

You’re not going to want to put this book down!

Come watch the sparks fly between Linda Zook and Aaron Ebersol. You won’t want to miss a second of the show.

And those aren’t the only sparks in this story – There is quite a bit of friction between Aaron and his brother Solomon as well.

You won’t regret it!

Happy Reading!

Here is what Zondervan has to say about A Simple Prayer:

Life has taken much from Linda Zook. Now she dares to hope for a chance at love and a new beginning.

Linda Zook, 32, works part-time at the Lancaster Grand Hotel. As the sole survivor of a buggy accident that left her orphaned at age four, she was raised by her unwilling Uncle Reuben. Linda longs to be worthy of someone, but the life-long effects of her injuries and her upbringing under the care of her embittered uncle have destroyed her self-worth.

Aaron Ebersol, 32, left the Amish community 17 years ago when he could no longer bear the restrictions or the constant tension with his father. He d written too many unanswered letters to his mother and found himself incapable of putting down any roots in his new home in Missouri. Success in work could not replace the family that denied Aaron, even after all of these years.

Aaron hastily returns to the Amish community of Paradise, PA, after receiving word of his mother’s stroke. Hesitant to get too close to the family he was once a part of, he decides to stay at the Heart of Paradise Bed & Breakfast. He soon encounters Linda, working there part-time, and they begin to develop a friendship.

Aaron’s return allows him to reconnect with his family as he jumps into home improvement projects, hoping to make his parents house more accessible to his handicapped mother. But before long, he is enraged to learn that his brother, Solomon, had hidden all of Aaron’s letters to their mother.

Linda and Aaron must each learn to forgive the family members who have deceived and forsaken them. And Aaron must also show Linda that she is worthy of his love.

“A Stranger’s Secret” by Laurie Alice Eakes

Another book by an author I’ve never read before…

And even though it’s the second book in the series, I was not at all lost.

In fact, I was so caught up in the story, that I never even stopped to think about what I might be missing in the back-story.

However, I will be going back to check out the first story… and probably reading this one again just after.

It’s a powerful story, an intriguing mystery…

This is certainly an author I will be watching.

And I hope you’ll give the book a chance. I’m certain you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!

Here is a brief synopsis from Zondervan:

As a grieving young widow, Morwenna only wants a quiet life for herself and her son. Until a man washes ashore, entangling her in a web of mystery that could threaten all she holds dear.

Lady Morwenna Trelawny Penvenan indulged in her fair share of dalliances in her youth, but now that she’s the widowed mother to the heir of the Penvenan title, she’s desperate to polish her reputation. When she’s accused of deliberately luring ships to crash on the rocks to steal the cargo, Morwenna begins an investigation to uncover the real culprits and stumbles across an unconscious man lying in the sea’s foam—a man wearing a medallion with the Trelawny crest around his neck.

The medallion is a mystery to David Chastain, a boat builder from Somerset. All David knows is that his father was found dead in Cornwall with the medallion in his possession after lying and stealing his family’s money. And he knows the widow who rescued him is impossibly beautiful—and likely the siren who caused the shipwreck in the first place—as well as the hand behind whoever is trying to murder David.

As Morwenna nurses David back to health and tries to learn how he landed on her beach, suspicion and pride keep their growing attraction at bay. But can they join together to save Morwenna’s name and estate and David’s life? Can they acknowledge the love they are both trying to deny?

“An Uncertain Choice” by Jody Hedlund | YA DEBUT

Well, I’ll say this… Jody Hedlund excels at starting things off with a bang!

Let me say this also – if you are at all squeamish, have a weak stomach or a sensitive nature, you might want to rethink this read.

I can hardly believe it’s classified as young adult because the opening chapter alone is certainly not what I would present to a young audience.

But then, Jody has 10+ books under her belt so she may know more about it than me – so don’t just take my word for it.

Despite being too much for my tender Mercy’s heart, the book is incredibly well-written. In fact, it was all I could do to put it down… even when I was more than a little bothered by the content.

And possibly young adults today are more mature than I am giving them credit for and are perfectly able to handle such things but I know I am not and I’m 35.

Of course I discovered that when I tried to read about WWII…

Certain authors understand the squeamishness of their audience and write in such a way to show the horrors of real life without making it quite so descriptive.

This is not the first story of Jody Hedlund’s I have read and it certainly won’t be the last. I am nearly obsessed with her new lighthouse series and I look forward to each and every one so she has not lost me as a reader… just maybe not of her medievel series.

By the way, I’m giving the book 3 stars because – even though it’s not for me – it is exceptionally well-written. It would have been 4 but I’m still not certain this particular story is suitable for young adults and I hope the 3 stars will catch more attention and perhaps more readers will see my warning.

“Serving Up A Sweetheart” by Cheryl Wyatt | A Year of Weddings Novella – February 2015

What an intriguing story.

It’s kind of funny… every one of these stories I pick up, I find that I have something in common with the characters within.

I was bullied for very different reasons in high school but I know just how difficult that is to deal with, and to try and move beyond.

I understand totally the need to accomplish something, to prove to everyone that you can.

And I can completely feel the aggravation that Meadow would experience when she has to deal with a man who tormented her through her tender teen years.

All in all, an excellent addition to the Year of Weddings lineup.

You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. by Ben Carson MD

WOW!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

Ben Carson is not only a gifted surgeon, he is a wonderful writer – funny, interesting and this book is exceptionally difficult to put down.

Even the descriptions of brain surgery, which should be nothing but gross, had my complete attention because they were phrased in such a way that made them interesting but not at all gross or disgusting.

And the stories about Dr. Carson’s mother… WOW!

No wonder he is such an intelligent and learned man – she is clearly a GENIUS!

I refuse to spoil the book for you but please take my word for it – it is a FANTASTIC book! A MUST READ! And not just for teens either… parents will get so much out of this book too!

Here is a brief synopsis from Thomas Nelson:

Throughout his life, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson has needed to overcome many obstacles: His father leaving the family; being considered stupid by his classmates in grade school; growing up in inner-city Detroit; and having a violent temper. But Dr. Carson didn’t let his circumstances control him, and instead discovered eight principles that helped shape his future.

In You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to Think Big, Dr. Carson unpacks the eight important parts of Thinking Big–Talent, Honesty, Insight, being Nice, Knowledge, Books, In-Depth learning, and God–and presents the stories of people who demonstrated those things in his life. By applying the idea of T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. to your life, and by looking at those around you as well, you too can overcome obstacles and work toward achieving your dreams.

Book 3 in Amy Clipston’s YA series! | Miles From Nowhere – an EARLY look!

I’ll be honest with you. I was worried about this book.

I mean… I read YA but it’s almost always fairy tales or Amish fiction – and I was concerned that I would not be able to connect with this story.

I was wrong.

WOW! I identified with Chelsea in so many ways, ways I never expected. Even reading the back of the book, I didn’t really “get it”. Until I started reading the book that is.

This book will appeal to young adults because they are either going through the very things Chelsea is dealing with in her life or they’ve watched a friend go through it.

It will appeal to adults because we will be reminded of our youth. It’s like a doorway we can look through to our own past. Amy has somehow managed to capture that and it’s amazing.

I mean, I knew she was a great writer but I don’t think I realized how great until I read this story. And it makes me want to go back and read her other young adult stories.

I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to give the story away but I can remember how easy it is to be distracted by an exciting boy. This story brings back the memories of my teen years in sharp clarity.

A MUST read!

Here is what Zondervan has to say about Miles From Nowhere:

Chelsea Morris has always been responsible, dependable, and focused on her dreams of fashion design—a dream that will officially begin come fall, when she leaves for college in New York City. And as she settles into her role as the lead designer for the local summer stock theater group, she decides to make the most of her last summer in North Carolina. But with her best friend Emily busy working late and spending time with Zander, and tensions with Chelsea’s boyfriend, Todd, running high, the summer she envisioned seems to be falling flat.

Then Dylan joins the latest summer production. There’s something about the college boy that makes her feel free and alive, and soon she’s broken up with Todd, and is sneaking out late to meet Dylan at parties and breaking rules at the playhouse. But before she knows it, her exciting nights are interfering with her job, her role on the play, as well as her relationship with Emily and with her parents. Worse, Chelsea finds herself feeling more and more estranged from God.

As the summer becomes wilder than she ever dreamed, Chelsea must decide if her heart is leading her in the right direction after all.

“A Brush With Love” by Rachel Hauck | A Year of Weddings Novella – January 2015

BrushWithLove2

I had a very interesting and unexpected reaction to this story.

The synopsis gave no clue whatsoever to the unique circumstances behind the “childhood tragedy” that Ginger must overcome – and normally I would NEVER reveal something so intrinsic to the plot line but it seems something has been said about it in every other review I’ve read so I have no compunction whatsoever in revealing this particular tidbit…

Especially as I had a teacher in school with a similar experience.

Of course… unlike Ginger, my teacher had found peace with her own scars. She did not go to great lengths to cover them up and I’m not certain I would have been so strong as she was but she had God’s grace on her side and that gave her the strength to find the beauty within.

I always thought she was beautiful anyway… And she was a terrific teacher!

Don’t miss this heart-warming novella and read about how Ginger deals with her own scars…

A Brush with Love | A Year of Weddings novella (Zondervan, January 2015)

Ginger Winters is a gifted hairstylist with scars no one can see. The last thing she expects from the New Year is a new chance at love.

Overcoming a childhood tragedy, Ginger emerges from the pain and trauma with a gift for bringing out the beauty in others. From the top big city salons to traveling the world as personal stylist to a country music sensation, success was almost enough to make Ginger forget her she would never be one of the beautiful people.

Almost. Now that she’s back home in Rosebud, Alabama and running her own salon, the truth remains: Ginger is still that girl, forever on the outside looking in. But she needs her confidence this weekend. She’s the acclaimed “beauty-maker” for the Alabama society wedding of the decade.

When high-school crush Tom Wells Jr. also returns to town and shows up at her shop looking for a haircut, Ginger’s thinly veiled insecurities threaten to keep her locked away from love, Despite Tom’s best efforts, Ginger can’t forget how he disappeared on her twelve years ago and broke her heart. Can she ever trust him again?

When Tom challenges her to see her own beauty, Ginger must decide if she will remained chained to the past or move freely into a new, exciting future.

Book 3 in Amy Clipston’s Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel is FINALLY HERE!

A Dream of Home is the 3rd novel in Amy Clipston’s “The Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel” series It is scheduled to be released November 4, 2014. Yes, I got an early look! I LOVE being a book reviewer!

OK… now about the story.

I have to admit that I fell madly in love with Emma in A Mother’s Secret and I was nearly heart-broken when things did not go the way she planned…

So of course, I was excited to see her return in
A Dream of Home.

I have never been a combat nurse but there are a few things in my past that occasionally come back to haunt me so I feel a sort of kinship with Madeline Miller.

It also helps that Amy Clipston writes her nightmares so well that you truly feel like you’re right there, experiencing it with her.

I did not feel a kinship to Saul Beiler however.

Actually, when I was reading book 2: A Mother’s Secret, he nearly knocked Barbie off the pedestal of most disliked characters. He was just so rude and abrupt and… well, annoying.

I NEVER could have imagined that Saul would be remotely interested in a REAL relationship. I was sure he was just one of those controlling and angry men who hide behind their religious convictions.

BOY was I wrong!

I love that Amy Clipston occasionally throws you a crazy curve ball! It keeps her books interesting in a way that not many authors think of.

And I am NOT giving anything away about the story!

You’ll just have to read it for yourself! Trust me when I say that it is WORTH a read!

And keep watching! Amy has ANOTHER book coming in this series. It’s slotted to release next year.

And I’m sure A Simple Prayer will be just as fantastic as the first three in the series!

Happy Reading!

Here is what Zondervan has to say about A Dream of Home:

Moving to Pennsylvania wasn’t in Madeleine’s original plans. She should still be in California and should have married her pilot fiance a year ago-but death has a way of changing everything.

Now the former Air Force flight nurse is living alone in Paradise, Pennsylvania, and working as a maid at the Lancaster Grand Hotel. She isn’t exactly a widow . . . but she sure feels like one.

Saul Beiler isn’t exactly a widower . . . but his wife is long gone. His eleven-year-old daughter, Emma, doesn’t know that her mother fled the Amish community-and married another man-but she does know that her dat is lonely, and that a pretty young maedel just moved in next door.

Madeline’s numb heart begins to thaw as she spends more time with the innocent and ever optimistic Emma. The stronger her friendship grows with the young girl, the more intrigued Madeline grows about the humble, strong, man raising her on his own.

But even as a strange attraction pulls Saul and Madeleine across a stark cultural divide, they-and everybody else-have to wonder: What could they possibly have in common besides heartache? Will love allow Madeleine to finally find the home she’s been dreaming of all along?

Shelley Shepard Gray has been holding out on us! | My thoughts on her new novel: “Secrets of Sloane House”

Granted I’ve only been reading Shelley Shepard Gray’s books for a little over a year but I feel certain that I did not know she had this in her.

I’m not a huge fan of mystery or suspense but when it’s Shelley Shepard Gray, it HAS TO BE worth reading! So I gave it a try and WOW!

Or I suppose I should say… Shelley Gray.

Secrets of Sloane House is an OUTSTANDING read!

Aw man… now I’m going to have to go read her Amish suspense series aren’t I…

I’m just kidding! After reading Secrets of Sloane House…
I really WANT TO!

I don’t know if she was intrigued by Historical mysteries before she wrote Amish or if writing about the buggies and bonnets crowd that drew her to this genre as well but I am not surprised in the least that this book is written so well!

I will say that I truly hope she continues to WOW us with her wonderful Amish romances but I am certainly not opposed to seeing more books of this type too!

I understand there us another “Chicago World’s Fair” coming soon and I find myself very excited about that one now too!

Not many authors can paint a picture like Shelley Shepard Gray. She is one author who will undoubtedly do very well – no matter what genre she is writing!

An author to keep your eyes on!

And here is a bit more about the book from Zondervan:

One woman’s search for the truth of her sister’s disappearance leads her to deceit and danger in 1893 Chicago.

Rosalind Perry has left her family’s rural farm in Wisconsin to work as a housemaid at Sloane House, one of the most elegant mansions in Gilded Age Chicago. However, Rosalind is not there just to earn a living and support her family—she’s at Sloane House determined to discover the truth about her sister’s mysterious disappearance.

Reid Armstrong is the handsome heir to a silver fortune. However, his family is on the periphery of Chicago’s elite because their wealth comes from “new money” obtained from successful mining. Marriage to Veronica Sloane would secure his family’s position in society—the lifelong dream of his ailing father.

When Reid begins to realize that Rosalind’s life may be in danger, he stops thinking of marriage prospects and concentrates on helping Rosalind. Dark things are afoot in Chicago and, he fears, in Sloane House. If he’s not vigilant, Rosalind could pay the price.

Set against the backdrop of Chicago’s Gilded Age and the 1893 World’s Fair, Secrets of Sloane House takes us on a whirlwind journey of romance and mystery.

A wonderful alternative to secular comics!

Raegan & RJ in SpaceGood morning! I am reviewing a fantastic new Graphic Novel: Raegan AND RJ IN SPACE  by Richard Collins.

This is actually the first graphic novel I have ever read and I have to say, while I’m not much of a comics fan myself, I love it!

I think it’s possible that kids of all ages will love this book! I say that because a lot of teens or young adults love comics just as much as those who are 10 or 12.

This is a graphic novel that would appeal to them all, I think.

And it has a WONDERFUL message too!

This is a book that any parent should buy if they have children who are interested in comics of space or astronauts!

Aside from the wonderful pictures and the fun story-line, the book includes many bonus pictures of the ship layout and colony maps – which I love in the Sci-Fi books I read so I’m sure kids would LOVE them!

My son is obsessed with space travel and he was so excited to see that this book looked at space travel from a Christian perspective. It’s so difficult to find reading material along these lines for him. It’s not so hard to find main-stream Sci-Fi novels or graphic novels but from a Christian world-view… nearly impossible.

So this book is a blessing as well!

Don’t miss it!

A look at the new series by Nancy I Sanders.

Good morning! I am reviewing a new book from Zonderkidz today: Get to Know King David

This book is part of an intriguing new series by Nancy I. Sanders. Thus far there are 4 books available but with so many wonderful characters to chose from, we will most likely see more to come!

not only does it give children interesting facts to mull over, but it also follows the Common Core Standards.

The author did a great job with the beautiful color maps and photos, along with scripture references and lots of fun facts.

For very young children, I think this book would be exciting to read and it is very… easy… to read.

Hopefully children will connect with the way Nancy tells a story about King David.

And the word bank makes learning about King David interesting… and fun!

The chapters are very descriptive – and the timeline is full of interesting information.

Children should find this book an easy read and an entertaining way to learn about the life of one of their favorite Biblical characters!

Here is a bit more about the book from ZonderKidz:

A Shepherd and A King David lived an adventurous life. He protected his family’s sheep from lions and bears. He fought a giant with just a sling and stone. He even spent years hiding from men who were trying to kill him. And eventually, David became a great king. But David was also a man of God. Learn more about this hero from the Bible and his exciting place in history. Discover what it was like to grow up in ancient Israel and then be a king of God’s people. King David—part of the Get to Know series—will teach you everything you need to know about an imperfect young man whom God used to do great things! My review of “Prelude For A Lord” by Camille Elliot

There is so much more to this story than a young girl playing the violin.

Yes there is a hint of danger, yes there is adventure and romance but there is also an intriguing family dynamic that was clearly very well researched.

Bravo to Camille Elliot for doing such a wonderful job!

I recently attended a writer’s conference and one of the authors writes historical fiction and she stressed that accuracy in research is key to telling a convincing story. Clearly Camille knew that already!

I admit it is a bit difficult at times to follow the language but it really does take you back into this far away time when life was so much simpler and yet so much more complex.

Camille Elliot draws us in immediately with a shock that just may knock you off your feet as well. And then she takes us on what – at first appears to be a simply spun take of a young and somewhat odd woman.

But it soon becomes clear that we are in for a wild ride. This is not the regency romance I grew up with… This is a tale of deceit carefully woven and the danger that comes along with it.

What a surprise! A mystery and a romance wrapped up in a historical novel that you would not truly expect either from.

Here is more about “Prelude For A Lord” from Zondervan:

An awkward young woman. A haunted young man. A forbidden instrument. Can the love of music bring them together . . . or will it tear them apart?

Bath, England 1810

At twenty-eight, Alethea Sutherton is past her prime for courtship; but social mores have never been her forte. She might be a lady, but she is first and foremost a musician.

In Regency England, however, the violin is considered an inappropriate instrument for a lady. Ostracized by society for her passion, Alethea practices in secret and waits for her chance to flee to the Continent, where she can play without scandal.

But when a thief s interest in her violin endangers her and her family, Alethea is determined to discover the enigmatic origins of her instrument . . . with the help of the dark, brooding Lord Dommick.

Scarred by war, Dommick finds solace only in playing his violin. He is persuaded to help Alethea, and discovers an entirely new yearning in his soul.

Alethea finds her reluctant heart drawn to Dommick in the sweetest of duets . . . just as the thief’s desperation builds to a tragic crescendo . . .

Author Spotlight: Melanie Dickerson | Award Winning Author of REAL Fairy Tales

Thank you for joining me for another exciting Author Spotlight!

Melanie Dickerson is one of my new FAVORITE authors – for her exceptional writing AND for her true-to-life portrayals of traditional fairy tales!

headshotA bit about Melanie via her WEBSITE:

Melanie Dickerson is an award-winning author who earned her bachelor’s degree in special education from The University of Alabama. She has taught in Georgia, Tennessee, Germany and the Eastern European country of Ukraine. A member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and Romance Writers of America (RWA), she now spends her time writing and taking care of her husband and two daughters near Huntsville, Alabama.

And here is my interview with Melanie Dickerson:

You talk a lot about researching the towns and time period of your novels. What research have you done for the fairy tale part? Do you study the original fairy tales written by the brothers Grimm, Hans Christine Anderson and Charles Perault?

I wouldn’t say I study them, but I usually read them. More often than not, my stories are loosely based on the Disney movie as much as they are on the original fairy tales. My goal is more to write a story with some of the familiar elements that people relate to the Beauty and the Beast story, or the Sleeping Beauty story, or the Frog Prince story. For instance, in my upcoming book, The Princess Spy, which is a Frog Prince story, the heroine loses something valuable—a family heirloom bracelet—in the well, just as the girl in the original story lost her favorite ball in the well, and the “frog prince” offers to get it for her. In return she is expected to do something for him. So I try to incorporate some of the little details of the story into my books, and I also try to use some of the same themes from the original story, as well as the overall premise.

Your story plots are so intricate and many times, it seems impossible that things could work out like the tales we know so well. Do you sketch out a rough draft or an outline before you start writing? How often does a plot twist surprise you in the middle of writing?

There is always at least one plot twist that surprises me during the writing of the book. I do try to have a rough outline, at least in my head, before I start writing, but the details tend to work themselves out as I write and think ahead. I don’t write detailed outlines, though, before I write the first draft, and the first draft usually just needs a little tweaking and editing before it’s ready to send to the editor at my publishing house.

How do you come up with the names of your characters? How close are they to the original names of the fairy tale heroes or villains?

Right now I’m trying to decide what to name my Rapunzel heroine, which is the book I’m about to start writing. Should I call her Rapunzel? Something similar? Or just some Medieval German name I like that seems right for the character? I don’t know, honestly. My Snow White character I named Sophie, since Snow White seemed too unrealistic, and for my Beauty and the Beast character, I named her Annabel instead of Belle because it seemed more British, which is where I decided to set that story. So I usually try to make the name similar but accurate to the time period.

You recently signed a new contract with Thomas Nelson. The first book you mention sounds as if it will be following a similar line as your YA fairy tales. How much more adult will those stories be?

They will not be very different at all. Maybe one or two extra kisses, and maybe a slightly more mature situation here or there, but not very different at all from my “YA” stories, which appeal to adults as well. The heroines will be slightly older.

Any chance you have an idea for Rapunzel’s story? That would be a tricky one to make “real” I would think. (Yes I asked this question with no idea of how Melanie would answer my above question…)

Yep. I have to start writing it right away since it’s due to my publisher in 4 months! The heroine is a surprise, so I can’t say too much about her, but you will catch a glimpse of the hero, Sir Gerek, at the end of The Princess Spy. He is one of Duke Wilhelm’s knights who falls in love with a mysterious midwife’s only daughter. But when the midwife decides to separate the two, Sir Gerek will do anything to find her and get her back.

Thank You Melanie for giving us your time and sharing a bit about your work!
I don’t know about everyone else but I LOVE reading about how an author goes about their process and what’s next for them. It makes me feel like I’m chatting with an old friend.
And it makes reading the books that much more special too!

A Look Back at “The Captive Maiden” by Melanie Dickerson | The BEST Cinderella story I have ever read!

The Captive Maiden 300

Yes I did. I went back and read “The Captive Maiden” again!

And it was JUST as wonderful the second time through!

Even knowing what to expect did not detract from the romance and excitement of the story.

From my original review:

This is a wonderful story! Melanie Dickerson did a great job of molding a popular fairy tale into an inspirational story for teens that, I think, will appeal to adults as well.

It’s also an answer to a prayer since I am hesitant about letting my daughter read more traditional fairy tales – which focus so much on magic. Now I can collect the previous 3 books Melanie has written and any more that are yet to come.

Melanie Dickerson has taken out the magic and weaved God into every part of this story. So instead of confusing teens, Melanie Dickerson offers hope and truth.

What a blessing!

And it truly is! It is such a blessing to read a real fairy tale. It is also incredibly refreshing to read about heroes and villains who are clearly just human. The villains of Cinderella are famous – evil stepmother, evil stepsisters, being poor… But Melanie Dickerson added an extra villain to this wonderful story and I was so relieved to see that he was all too human – with human weaknesses and flaws.

And speaking of human flaws – it is beyond refreshing to read about a big strong knight who is absolutely unnerved by tears. There are quite a few men who suffer from this particular flaw and young girls need to know about this sort of thing.

The story itself is an absolute gem. In “The Fairest Beauty”, we watched a handsome young man who was clever with words win the maiden’s heart and then, when she met her betrothed – she found him frightening and overwhelming…she even thought he was somewhat of a bully. But she was seeing him through the eyes of his brother and her perspective was most likely due to her love for him.

In “The Captive Maiden”, we see another young maiden’s reaction to that same brother and it could not be more different. It’s a prime example of seeing someone through the eyes of love – any young lady who is not in love with him would see only the rough battles scars, be intimidated by his size and feel put off by his lack of finesse when it comes to words. However, these are the very things that should endear him to the woman who loves him. That should be how love works and traditional fairy tales simply don’t get that point across. – in my humble opinion.

Melanie Dickerson does!

Here’s a further look at the story from Zondervan:

Happily Ever After …Or Happily Nevermore? Gisela’s childhood was filled with laughter and visits from nobles such as the duke and his young son. But since her father’s death, each day has been filled with nothing but servitude to her stepmother.

So when Gisela learns the duke’s son, Valten—the boy she has daydreamed about for years—is throwing a ball in hopes of finding a wife, she vows to find a way to attend, even if it’s only for a taste of a life she’ll never have. To her surprise, she catches Valten’s eye.

Though he is rough around the edges, Gisela finds Valten has completely captured her heart. But other forces are bent on keeping the two from falling further in love, putting Gisela in more danger than she ever imagined.

“The Fairest Beauty” | A retelling of Snow White by Melanie Dickerson

image

I find myself wishing I were a slower reader… Because now I have come to the end and I must wait until November to read the next story.

How will I survive?

Well I suppose I can always read “The Captive Maiden” again so there’s that. And I’m certain I can find some other books to help me pass the time.

But I want to know what happens next!

Absolutely no insult is intended to “The Captive Maiden” or “The Healer’s Apprentice” or “The Merchant’s Daughter”… but I do believe “The Fairest Beauty” is the absolute BEST book Melanie Dickerson has written yet!

“The Fairest Beauty” has everything you would expect to find in a fairy tale – A damsel in distress, mistaken identity, exaggerated rumors of the Princess’s death, an evil “Queen” – in this case a Duchess, a hired assassin and a hero!

It’s just an all-around GREAT story!

And the real-life fairy tale is so much more  appealing in my opinion! These are real people with real emotions and real flaws! – not some perfect, flawless combination of all the best traits and none of the worst that we see in the traditional fairy tales. Even the “bad guys” are clearly human, with flaws and weakness – not just a villain that’s purely evil who does nasty things simply because they can.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
I LOVE the way Melanie Dickerson writes fairy tales!

She doesn’t put the focus on the wrong things – magic and rebellion. She makes certain the focus is on how important it is to marry for love – which is Biblical (Marriage is meant to be forever… do you really want to be in a loveless marriage forever?). And she draws your attention to how important it is to remain pure and innocent – saving yourself for the man you marry.

This story especially – shows how important it is to understand the difference between love and lust.

It’s a difficult subject and not always a popular one in the world we live in today but it is an important one and I am very impressed to see an author taking a stand!

BRAVO MELANIE!

I wish these were the fairy tales I had grown up with. I can only imagine how different my outlook on life might be if I had not started with the ridiculous world view traditional fairy tales present.

All the more reason that these will be the fairy tales I give MY daughter to read!

All little girls need to know – while fairy tales can be real – they are not all about magic and luck!

Here is a bit about the book from Zondervan:

A daring rescue. A difficult choice.

Sophie desperately wants to get away from her stepmother’s jealousy, and believes escape is her only chance to be happy. Then a young man named Gabe arrives from Hagenheim Castle, claiming she is betrothed to his older brother, and everything twists upside down. This could be Sophie’s one chance at freedom—but can she trust another person to keep her safe?

Gabe defied his parents Rose and Wilhelm by going to find Sophie, and now he believes they had a right to worry: the girl’s inner and outer beauty has enchanted him. Though romance is impossible—she is his brother’s future wife, and Gabe himself is betrothed to someone else—he promises himself he will see the mission through, no matter what.

When the pair flee to the Cottage of the Seven, they find help—but also find their feelings for each other have grown. Now both must not only protect each other from the dangers around them—they must also protect their hearts.

Beauty and the Beast as seen by Melanie Dickerson | “The Merchant’s Daughter”

image

Melanie Dickerson has done it again!

These books truly are the absolute BEST versions I’ve ever seen of the classic fairy tales!

Melanie Dickerson brings together the romance of fairy tale and the harsh reality of life – blending them together seamlessly to tell a beautiful tale of Love, Healing and Forgiveness.

You think you know where the story is going and you think you know precisely how it’s all going to end up because the stories are following the classic fairy tale we all know… Right?

No.

Melanie Dickerson has surprising twists and turns all through the book that you will never see coming, all the while still weaving in bits from the original fairy tale. And you will find yourself so entranced with the story, you may not even realize it until later.

“The Merchant’s Daughter” once again deals with some hard-core themes. And once again Melanie Dickerson does so with class and diplomacy. There is no sugar coating but the descriptions are done in the best possible taste.

I recommend these books to anyone and everyone! In fact, I plan to introduce them to my daughter, instead of the more traditional fairy tales!

Personally I never understood how such tales became so very popular – especially in a time where magic and witchcraft was so suspect. People from the times described originally in these tales did not delight in magic and sorcery, they hunted down anyone suspected of it and dealt them a quick and harsh death. So why tales filled with such magic would ever have become popular, I have no idea. Unless it was simply the temptation of the forbidden – we humans do seem to have a particular weakness for wanting those things that we cannot have.

Melanie Dickerson has told these stories in such a realistic way – retaining the romance and excitement but adding in truth. And in my opinion, it makes them that much more appealing! I would rather my daughter have realistic fairy tales to grow up with and not ridiculous stories that could not possibly have happened – that I will one day have to tell her are entirely false and quite impossible.

Any woman would greatly enjoy these stories of adventure, love and danger.

And with Melanie Dickerson at the helm, you may know where you’ll end up but you can never accuse her of being predictable.

Here is what Zondervan has to say about “The Merchant’s Daughter”:

An unthinkable danger. An unexpected choice.

Annabel, once the daughter of a wealthy merchant, is trapped in indentured servitude to Lord Ranulf, a recluse who is rumored to be both terrifying and beastly. Her circumstances are made even worse by the proximity of Lord Ranulf’s bailiff—a revolting man who has made unwelcome advances on Annabel in the past.

Believing that life in a nunnery is the best way to escape the escalation of the bailiff’s vile behavior and to preserve the faith that sustains her, Annabel is surprised to discover a sense of security and joy in her encounters with Lord Ranulf.

As Annabel struggles to confront her feelings, she is involved in a situation that could place Ranulf in grave danger. Ranulf’s future, and possibly his heart, may rest in her hands, and Annabel must decide whether to follow the plans she has cherished or the calling God has placed on her heart.

Melanie Dickerson’s tale of the classic story – Sleeping Beauty – “The Healer’s Apprentice”

To think that I almost missed this series…image

I have to admit that I only read this book because my 10 year old son (who is now 11) told me that I had to read “The Captive Maiden”.

Now you’re wondering why…

Once upon a time, I signed up to win a copy of Melanie Dickerson’s “The Captive Maiden” and I won. I was surprised because I don’t usually win when I sign up for giveaways. I do it to show support for the author.

But apparently God meant for me to read this series!

I was not impressed when I started reading the book. The cruelty was almost too much for me and I stopped reading. Then my son picked up the book, looked at the cover and read the back. After that, he demanded that I read it. This was such a rare occurrence (usually he ignores the books I buy or teases me about it) that I knew I had to give it a try.

And again, it must have been God’s leading.

These books are the absolute BEST versions I’ve ever seen of what are typically know of as “classic” fairy tales!

I’ve read reviews that complain about the strong themes in these books and I’ve read reviews that say they wish more from the original tales had been incorporated. And I am here to tell you that, in my opinion, they are wrong.

Melanie Dickerson deals with hard-core themes, yes. But she does it in a way that is honest and realistic while maintaining, what some may feel are ridiculously, high standards of modesty and decency – but I find refreshing in a world of bared bodies and brutish language. Our children need to be aware of these things and how to deal with them, especially since they are very much a part of the world we live in today. As much as I would like to shelter them from everything bad or wrong in the world, they have to know that evil exists and they have to know how to confront it!

I feel that Melanie Dickerson presents these harsh issues with grace and discretion.

And as for having more from the original tales, I think it is amazing how well Melanie weaves the pieces of the classic fairy tales through her own stories – using them to help tell the story and reveal the hidden truths slowly throughout.

“The Healer’s Apprentice” is a masterpiece of reality blended flawlessly with fairy tale!

Melanie Dickerson’s characters are simply astonishing – well written, colorful and embodying the very same values and flaws of the heroes and villains that inspired them. And, as much as I would love to say that she always paints the bad guys as bad – it would not be true to life if that were the case.

Evil is deceptive and tricky and it is not always easy to see it for what it really is.

The plot is so well-conceived, it is difficult to believe this is the first book she wrote after fifteen years of not writing. It flows beautifully and there is absolutely nothing I can think that would add to it.

Amazing!

And now I have three more books to look forward to – “The Merchant’s Daughter” and “The Fairest Beauty” right now and “The Princess Spy” releases soon!

Exciting!

Just in case you’re still not convinced…

Here is what Zondervan says about the series

 Two Hearts. One Hope.

Rose has been appointed as a healer’s apprentice at Hagenheim Castle, a rare opportunity for a woodcutter’s daughter like her. While she often feels uneasy at the sight of blood, Rose is determined to prove herself capable. Failure will mean returning home to marry the aging bachelor her mother has chosen for her—a bloated, disgusting merchant who makes Rose feel ill.

When Lord Hamlin, the future duke, is injured, it is Rose who must tend to him. As she works to heal his wound, she begins to understand emotions she’s never felt before and wonders if he feels the same. But falling in love is forbidden, as Lord Hamlin is betrothed to a mysterious young woman in hiding.

As Rose’s life spins toward confusion, she must take the first steps on a journey to discover her own destiny.

“A Mother’s Secret” | Book 2 in the Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series | Amy Clipston

A Mother's Secret

I ranted more than a little with my review of the first book in this series: A Hopeful Heart,  because someone ruined the book for me.

Which is why, In preparation for this book, I did not read ANY reviews.

Besides… I knew it would be great!
Why would I need to read reviews!

A Mother’s Secret  is a absolute masterpiece.

Amy Clipston has taken a delicate, sensitive subject and put a face on it that I certainly never expected to see.

I have read books by other authors of Amish fiction about this same subject but most of them focus on the shame in their community or the hardship on the mother or the ostracism from family.

A Mother’s Secret  takes a whole new approach and I LOVE IT!

Yes there is mention of the “shame” Carolyn’s “situation” brought to the family but it is not the focus of the story, except for how much Carolyn punishes herself about it. The community has forgiven her – but that’s really what we expect from an Amish community, isn’t it?

And yes, there is mention of the hardship on Carolyn but it’s primarily past-tense for this story and only as it contributes to the story, again…not the focus. It’s nothing like what you read about in many other books that seem to make the hardship a single mother deals with the main focus of the story.

And while there is friction between Joshua and his mother… and Carolyn and Joshua’s mother… and Benjamin and Joshua’s mother – noticing a pattern here… if you read the first book, you know Barbie causes friction between her and almost everyone around her – there is no ostracism from Carolyn’s own family, which…again, is what you would expect from an Amish family. The Amish are famous for their forgiveness.

Just keep that in mind as you read – I’m not going to say why…

This is the story of a mother and her son. It highlights the family dynamics that come with this somewhat unique situation but it clearly focuses on the mother and son. And Amy Clipston does a beautiful job of writing, not just a love story between Carolyn and her possible suitors, but between Carolyn and her son – who she and her family consider a blessing… not a burden like many other families might.

Perhaps it is the Amish worldview that helps them accomplish this or perhaps it is simply due to their intense faith in God and their strong desire to live as Christ-like a life as possible. Whatever the reason, Amy Clipston hit the mark perfectly with this book!

I must have rewritten and added to this review a dozen or more times – I kept thinking of things I had to add or a different way I wanted to say something and I just had to get it right! This is a tremendous story and I hope everyone who reads it gets as much of a blessing from it as I have.

God Bless you Amy Clipston!

Now I’m impatient for the next book, “A Simple Prayer, which is the final book in my Hearts of Lancaster Grand Hotel series” – via AmyClipston.com.

Is it 2015 yet?

More about “A Mother’s Secret” from Zondervan:

Carolyn Lapp dreams of marrying for love. But will the errors of her past destroy this dream forever?

Carolyn Lapp longs to have a traditional Amish family. But she lives on her brother’s farm with her parents and her 15-year old son, Benjamin. Carolyn has never revealed the identity of Benjamin’s father and lives daily with the guilt and shame of her youthful indiscretion.

Her brother simply will not forgive her. His answer is to arrange a practical marriage for Carolyn to Saul, a widower with a little girl. But Carolyn isn’t convinced that Saul really loves her and believes he is simply looking for someone to help raise his daughter.

When Benjamin causes trouble at a local horse auction, horse breeder Joshua Glick decides that he must be taught a lesson. Carolyn and Joshua are unmistakably drawn to each other, but Joshua mistakenly assumes that Benjamin is Carolyn’s brother.

Carolyn fears that if he discovers the truth, her past will destroy their budding romance. After years of shame and loneliness, Carolyn suddenly has two men vying for her attention. But which of them will give her the family—and the unconditional love—she’s longed for?
